Guys I could use your input here. I own a model 98 and have been very happy with it. I am considering the idea of getting a cheap back up gun, just in case anything ever goes wrong with my 98. Yes I know that this may not happen, but my free time is VERY limited. and I would hate to spend half the day fixing my gun, when I could be playing with my back up. So does anyone have any suggestions for a cheapo back up gun.

it might sound redundant, but i'd find a used 98 custom: you can find those SUPER cheap, and, as everyone knows, they are TANKS.

Absolutely. Cheap, reliable, and you already know how it works, and you can share parts with your main.

Spyder Victors are cheap on ebay, like $50 for one, they seem to work fine too.

Screw 98cs, for them to be a DECENT backup gun you will have to purchase a new barrel anyway. Go with a gun that has it all, the #1 I recommend for backup or heck, even main gun, is the Piranha GTI Ravage. Costs about 80-90$ Has a GREAT stock barrel, can fire up to 15bps, electronic, expansion chamber... basically everything you need incase you're main marker goes down and you want to jump in and still have a great gun! You can also update it to FLUSH-COCKING if you want, stock is open-bolt (the bolt will pop out and shoot back in) great gun though, I miss mine. It of course comes with PMI's reliable, E-Force Grip

I seen one of those today at walmart. the trigger seemed pretty good (it had the "try me" cut out on the package) you dont have to move the trigger very far at all. but IDK, what kind of threading does the barrel have? Id have to get a good cheap barrel for it...

Not at all - the whole point of using a 98 is that he can use parts from his main. If the backup comes into play, unscrew tank, barrel, hopper from main gun, attach to backup, and go nuts.

But if you've already GOT a 98c, you've GOT the aftermarket barrel to swap out with.

Piranha GTI uses Spyder Threaded barrels, which are basically the most common barrels out there and uh... Rambino, he can use his main guns C02 and Hopper...he dosen't need a barrel since GTI's come stock with a VERY good barrel. It's a sleek, compact, durable, fast gun, very light trigger pull too so you can walk it easily, and for the features.. the price can't be beat. I absolutely LOVE Piranhas because of how well they are built and what they feature... price to feature ratio is EXCELLENT. Meh, just talking about this wants me to get it again as a backup gun.. If I only had the $

A Stingray was my first semi-auto. If you visit the http://www.stinggroup.addr.com/ - STING website you can find quite a few mods to improve it's operation. I did a slightly modified* version of the standard trigger job and got the trigger pull down to the same as a 98. It made a very good backup until I started spending all of my spare money on Tippmanns.
*Differences: I put the trigger set screw in through the back of the
grip, dremeled down the part of the trigger that catches the safety and
put a screw through the body to act as a stop on the trigger moving
forward. http://www.stinggroup.addr.com/ -

Since when do 98s need backups?

I can't speak for other people, but I sometimes have a tendency to fix/tinker with stuff until it doesn't work.
ACTUAL CONVERSATION:
Friend: "Mack quit screwing with your gun, it's time to get on the field."
Me: "It's okay, I'm done messing with it now."
Friend: "Really, as much as you tinker with that thing how can you tell?"
Me: "When I pull the trigger nothing happens."
Note: Only slight exaggeration; I do like to try different mods and see what happens. Since most of my mods are somewhat experimental (and not always well thought out) sometimes things don't go quite right. On the plus side though, all the tinkering gave me a lot of practical experience on working on mechanical markers. It's got to the point that a lot of folks who know me at the field come to me with their problems.
Edited Note: My primary rule now for messing with my markers is to always have one working marker that I don't tinker with while I'm messing with the other ones.

Id say go with a Brass Eagle Marauder, or Eraticator. I had one for five years and was very happy with it. Just get a 12 inch barrell for it. Its a good reliable gun and its easy to strip down and clean.

Perfect example of why you should get another used 98. The mods will
eventually start and you'll have a baseline gun to compare it with or
use until you figure out what you did.
