about my career choices.....

Well, I'm in my second year of a secondary education (social studies) degree and I'm getting into the point that I'm getting done with the general reqs and actually getting into the real stuff. Sort of like a point of no return, or atleast harder return....

My doubt stems from my physical stature and atributes. See, as some of you know, I look really freakin young for my age. I'm also sorta short. This may sound kind of dumb but, I'm worried that if I look so young that I might have a problem being taken seriously by my future students.

Thats a stupid freakin problem to have, but it is a possible problem. What do you think? Think it's a valid worry? Any idea what I should do? I've been kinda having doubts about rather or not I really want to teach anyway, but I don't really know what else I want to do....another problem....

Any advice?

Maybe you should do some soul searching in the Himalayas.

If they mock you.

Watermark their face.

i actually think you'll do fine.  younger teachers seem to interact and connect better with the kids.  if you're able to connect with them on at least some level, then you'll be able to teach and control them better.

I thought of that too man. I figure if I cuss every now and then, show my tatoo from time to time(since hiding it will be annoying), and try to be more on their level it might give me an edge. But, the thing is, if I would start teaching tomorrow, a lot of my students in the upper grades would probably look older than me....

Watermarks will fix that.

you can infiltrate their ranks and bust school system-wide drug rings.

You could play that aspect up and not be the stuffy, boring teacher.
Just an idea.

But, yes, you will be less "respected." Though, probably more liked.

You will be fine. I always like the younger teachers better because they tend to know how to make the class more interesting.

I think half of teaching is about the life experience of the teacher. Sadly, the academic curriculum is all teachers seem to focus on, when they are in fact in a unique position to be mentors and role models for the children as well.

I've always held that teaching is ideally a 'second career'- that's the plan I intend on following myself. Get more mature people with real life experience out there teaching, and in the meantime enjoy your youth to get that experience in something totally unrelated.

That's totally just my opinion, though.

Yup, he actually said that.

You'll be one of teh favorite teachers.

It's always fun having a young teacher that curses and relates to you. Kids will probably actually pay attention to you...

You being young and everything will work as a benefit as a teacher.
