Subject: Pipe Smoking = Unhealthy?
Date Posted: 19 October 2006 at 12:53am

No news stories this time, just a few questions that need answering.

Primarily the health effects of pipe tobacco.

Now I know cigarettes can kill you, yada yada yada, and in my opinion, they are just nasty little things that smell bad (I don't want to debate this). But my great grandad used to smoke pipes, and they gave off a sweet aromatic smell; quite pleasurable really. I've taken kind of an interest in them, but my great grandad died years ago, and I have no one to ask.

My main question is: Is smoking a pipe any less dangerous/addicting than cigarettes, seeing as to you don't inhale the smoke? If so, how much safer? You're gonna have to bear with me, I know nothing about tobacco, other than nicotine=addicting.

Using tobacco in any form drastically increases your chance of cancer.  That includes pipes.

Less dangerous than cigarettes?  Dunno - but pipes are pretty darn dangerous.  Kind of like 150mph is "less dangerous" than 180mph.

You inhale pipe smoke, dont you?

I have never smoked tabacoo out of a pipe, but you would think its the same thing, again i dont have a wealth of knowledge on this topic

i wouldn't say that it's addicting like cigs because of the amount of nicotine your body is taking in.  although you will be taking some in.  yes, it's still bad for you, but not as bad as cigs or cigars.

As I suspected. You just don't see the stigmas surrounding pipes and cigars as you do cigarettes.

I smoke Cigars.. and have debated this subject many times... with cigarettes, you actually inhail, but it is normally filtered. Cigars, you don't inhail, Pipe, I'm pretty sure is the same way, just just roll it around in your mouth, then blow it out. If you inhailed pipe (since it's non-filtered) you would basically be doing the same amount of harm as inhailing a cigar... which is just not good at all. So in the end, yes, if you inhail pipe or a cigar, they are both equally bad, and are MUCH worse than cigarettes, because they aren't meant to be inhailed(cigarettes are) pipes and cigars (atleast cigars) arent.

I understand that, and that's another point. Since the smoke never gets into your lungs, does it actually damage them? What kind of crap can you get from smoking a pipe/cigar?

Well, technically speaking, you will ALWAYS get some smoke into your lungs. Honostly, I would be more worried of jaw cancer. Cigar smokers normally get mouth\jaw cancer more-so than lung cancer (if they smoke correctly), same with Pipe smokers.

That is a very dangerous misconception.

Cigars are just as bad. You have just as much chance for mouth/tongue/lip cancer as you do with any other tobacco product.

I like Cigars, but lets be honest.

Well, on that, I was talking primarly on Lung Cancer.. which is much higher with Cigarettes because you actually inhail... so I wasn't "lying" on that factor. And as I listed a post or two above this, the main problems with Cigar\Pipe smoking is the risk of mouth\jaw cancer.. not lung cancer which is associated more so with cigarettes... this makes me want to go get a Hooka lol.

Basically, yes, they are just as dangerous.
However, one thing I am thinking about, but am not sure of it's overall impact:
Generally one smokes far less when they use a Pipe, or Cigars, right?

That is the decent argument if there is any.

Most people do not smoke Pipes/Cigars as frequently as cigarettes.
I am not sure if studies have shown if amount of contact even varies in or not though. This is a job for more research man.

Right. This is as I pretty much figured. Clark, I've seen some mouth area cancer sufferers in DARE way back in the day. Not a pretty sight.

I've heard some misconceptions, Wiki didn't really help, and my folks had no idea, so I figured I should ask you guys. I didn't really intend to smoke anything anytime soon, but I figure I've got a healthy 60+ years left, not taking account of possible intervention, so there's always the future. I figured I should get a collective opinion.

Thanks.

And Whale, I'll have to find some good stats.

From what I've heard..  certain cigars can be equal to about.... twenty cigarettes (tobaco quanity wise), I can't remember where I heard that from.. maybe from the American Cancer Association.. not sure though. But yea, normally, people who smoke cigars\pipes, do not smoke as often aka (everyday have 6-12). I at MOST, will have two cigars in a day, then not have any for a week or two, maybe three.

I lived at a place for 15 years where we had to have water delivered by truck, the driver got lip and mouth cancer from smoking cigars and cigars only.  He was in his 50's and he said he smoked his last cigaratte when he was in his 30's.  He had his lower lip removed and when he started driving again, it was disgusting to see him with no lower lip and dabbing at his drool.  He ended up getting this amazing prosthetic lower lip that was very hard to discern from a real one, but the  reality was he was primarily a cigar smoker.

Of course, smoking a cigar is like chewing on the tobacco leaves at the same time, theoretically. Wouldn't the stem and bit of a pipe offer at least a little protection against something like that?

Well.. if you're that worried, you could buy a filter for your Pipe. They sell them at my cigar store... basically just pop it into your pipe... and it catches the "nasty" stuff.

It's the inhalation of the tobacco fumes, not the contact with the cigar.

Personally, I'm not sure how bad inhaling cigar/ pipe tobacco would be in comparison to cigarettes. Dont get me wrong, inhaling smoke of any kind is going to be bad for you, I would never dispute that, but I'm curious about this as well.

What I'm wondering is, since cigars dont have arsnic, carbon monoxide, formeldahide, etc in them.....how much damage to cigars do in comparison?

yeah, fewer additives in the tobacco used for cigars/cigarillos.

i want to get a pipe to try it out. i remember my dad smoking a pipe a few times, damn the tobacco smelled sweet. i enjoy being around a pipe smoker.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Probably the same for pipes. I understand it's not healthy, no one ever talks about cigars and pipes and such. It's always cigarettes. There's not alot of info to work with.

Actually direct contact has been known to increase the risk of cancer. That is why smokeless tobacco is still dangerous.

Alright, firstly, all smoking is unhealthy, but most McDonald's hamburgers are also unhealthy.

Here's a nice little article that provided a decent overview of the risks.

http://www.cigargroup.com/faq/health/ncifaq.htm - Smoke Me

If you don't inhale, you'll be fine.

Also, those who chain smoked during their youth for around a decade are obviously at hightened risk for various cancers. So everything is relative. You can't necessary blame a cigar for an ex-chain smoker developing some form of cancer later in his life.

Also, genetics play a little role aswell.

So while it is a gamble, the occasional cigar won't kill you (it might even make you stronger... well, probably won't).

I smoke only when drinking I dont know why I just feel like I need a cigar when Im trashed... people that smoke cigars they have a higher risk of diseases in the mouth then lungs because the smoke isnt going down into the lungs... thats why people that smoke cigarettes get lungs cancer because the smoke is going down into the lungs... so any kind of tobacco product is not good for you and its pretty much cancer waiting to happen... so in other words just dont smoke if you dont want cancer

*edit* but then there is people like my grandmother who has smoked for probably 60 years and is as healthy as a 80 year old can be and is cancer free so i dont get it

Smoking a pipe will increase mouth cancer and ruin your teeth and gums.

I do like the smell of pipe tobacco over cigerettes and cigars tho.

They are basically the same.. A cigar is tobacco.. and with a pipe, you are smoking, tobacco. I would say they are both on the same level, ciggeretes are on a completly different level.
Do you have a "Cigar Store" near you? Go there, they are bound to know plenty about pipe smoking.

Actually I think it is possible to get addicted even if you don't inhale, Sigmund Freud smoked nearly a box of cigars a day, even after he had his jaw removed he smoked until the day he died, but I don't know if he inhaled or not.

With Cigars, and Pipes, you don't normally get addicted to the tobaco.. you get addicted to the "Action\Movement" if you know what I mean.,.. holding it in your hand, bringing it to your mouth, that "movement" becomes a habit. I have yet to experiance it.. but I'm sure I will eventually.

That is just a lie people tell themselves to make them feel like they are not an addict. Sure, you get used to the motions, but it is not why long time smokers do it. MOST(only becomes some genetically don't get addicted) people are addicted to the nicotine.

They still had to get over the nicotine addiction. They are probably just replacing a habit to get over just the nicotine addiction and not have to worry about both. I never said that it wasn't a habit.

That was a pretty good article, STO. Helped a lot.

If ever I should wind up smoking, it probably would be an occaisional pipe or something like that. I find it ironic that the article said a few bowls a day could prolong your life...

I wonder what the chances of addiction are for pipes. No one in my near family smokes anything, if that means anything.

No you do not, same with cigar smoke if you inhale you will puke hard, personal expierence here don't question. However it is not any less dangerous, the difference between cigar and pipe smoking and cigarette smoking is the moderation you take. I havn't smoked a pipe in a month, and my last cigar was last weekend. Moderation is key when it comes to anything, especially smoking. Even if you smoked a cigerette like you smoked cigars it'd be less dangerous.

Yeah, I was thinking more along the lines of a weekend thing. Let off some of the week's pressure with a good pipe. Sounds appealing...

The article said they recommended about 2-3 bowls a day as a reasonable amount. If that's normal, than a weekend smoke shouldn't be a problem at all...

Seeing as to how pipe tobacco is similar to cigar tobacco, I'll just assume the same applies. But isn't the nicotine content what's addicting?

Smoking a pipe isn't about the apperance dude. It's about the experience for me. People that think I smoke for looks are dumb as hell seriously, my father and uncle both smoked pipes and cigars in front of me, and shared them with me for most of my life so now when I smoke a pipe or a cigar I am taken back to my time with them.
