It was truly outstanding.
Very fast, but obviously not as zippy as a Corvette or similar. Stopping and cornering was unbelievable - but the main feature is that it drove so amazing while still being comfortable.
Most sports cars are (IMO) not particularly comfortable to drive. This one cornered at 50mph in grand luxury. I definitely felt like I was driving a Mercedes.
I seriously enjoyed it.

Insurance on a car like that is better than on something like a cheaper import sports car.
Besides, the people that can afford an SL550 or above are old enough to not have insane teenage insurance rates, or really need to worry much about how much their insurance costs.

I definitely know what you mean about smooth driving. I get to drive my mom's Lexus when I need it right now because my car is going to get fixed. There is definitely a difference between those luxury brands and other brands.

Other than the slight cost difference, my main problem is that that type of car is generally not particularly comfortable.
I can't drive to work every day in a car that gives me a headache.

Audi owns Lamborghini now (has for a while) so several differences have been made. I've heard its not too bad comfort wise. Yeah, the old countache was a pain, hard to shift, couldnt see, etc...but they've come a long way

I talked them into a test ride in the 100k SL, but they still won't even let me SIT in the SLR...

10/10 in all departments except sudden accelleration. Once it gets going it does pretty well, but it an automatic, and there is some transmission lag when you first hit the pedal. I did burn rubber at every stop, though.
The mileage is also a bummer (15/20), but not unexpected for that kind of engine.
It is as comfortable as my E-Class, except that I could corner at 50mph.
I had "the grin" on my face the whole time.

If you want a sportscar, get a sportscar. A lotus or a porsche. There is little room for cushyness in sportscars. Z4 is a little too cushy for my liking. Get the M Roadster if you want something sporty and isn't going to bruise your butt if you hit a pebble. If they put the new 3.5L twin turbo motor in the Z4, get that instead. Better gas milage than the 6 cylinder M motor.
As for the wife, start out asking for a lambo, then when you go for something cheaper make sure she knows how responsible you're being and what a huge sacrifce you're making so you can still have a fun car and save money. If she absolutly needs 4 seats, M3. In the 100k range, M6.

should have tested the SL65 AMG. it will leave the new ZO6 in the dust.
twin-turbo V12 with 604hp and 738lbs of torque at 2000-4000K rpm.
btw if you want a very good car, the ZO6 is a great car. but then again i think you are looking for more plush. i want an all around performer on and off the track.

I drove behind a Cobalt a while the other day.
It was detagged and a little riced, so I didn't immediately know what it was, but it looked good enough to get my attention, and I circled for a while trying to figure out what it was. The "SS" on the side finally gave it away.
It looked kind of Japanese, kind of not, and very nice. Don't know how they drive, but they certainly CAN look good on the road. Heck, I'll say that for most of the new Chevies - they have definitely improved the appearance on the road.

car and driver did a nice article on the cobalt, or one of those car magizines i read. Regardless, they said it was pretty decent, but if you're looking for something sporty, small, and fast, the Dodge Neion SRT-4 is actually pretty nice. What happened to the E55/E63? Or did you get that and keep your old E320? If you are looking in the way of a luxurious, yet sporty car, I would wait for the Audi R8. It should be in the 80-100 range, it will be awd, 420 hp, Mid engine (glass over engine, like a 360/430) and it might eventually get the V10 from the Gallardo. Sl's are nice but every snowbird and their mother has one. Plus, with Mercedes dilluting themselves with so many classes of cars like the R, SLK, future MLK, their reliability has really gone down. The Sl and last gen S are both rated as "Poor" reliability by consumer reports. And heck, why not just go for an M6 convertible for about the same price of the SL550?

I still have the E320. I am pre-shopping for its replacement whenever I decide to get rid of it.
The cars I am currently considering is another E-Class (either AMG or Bluetec), SL, BMW M3, M5, whatever diesel they eventually bring here, and occasionally I contemplate a Porsche, Lotus, Tesla, old Ferrari, or something along those lines.
I want something zippy, but realistically I will probably end up buying something with a proper back seat. I will probably end up wanting an automatic as well, since this will be my commuting car, and that will limit my choices among the more sporty cars. For the same reason, I do need something very comfortable. I am not really looking for a race car.
But this is still a ways out. I am a slow shopper.

I really dont like imports. Id rather have an old Mustang or Chevelle or Daytona or something and customize the crap out of it.(Replace almost every stock part with something lighter or something) just to mess with Gallardo owners.(People would admit me to a mental hospital for that). And I know im a big 11 year old muscle head. I know my aunt has a 60 or 40k new marcedes sedan. It has a V6 but its accually kinda fast....

The M6 is pretty - but much like the CLS, it's a tweener. It kind of has a back seat, but not one that I could could people in. Might as well get a 2-seater. And, of course, the M6 is a bit pricy too. But definitely pretty.
And separately, of course, I would like to be a responsible citizen and not get a complete gas guzzler. That's where the diesels come in. 35+ mpg with a luxury car, and the option to go biodiesel. Paying a gas guzzler tax gives me a headache - not so much for the money as the underlying moral issue. I can't stand waste.

i guess the next best thing, if you want something sporty, but not a pain to drive would be something with paddle shifters, or triptronic? I think the M5 and M6 are auto but can switch to paddle. I don't remember the article i read on them. I think the M5 is a sedan

If I had the money I would be looking at BMW. I have a serious passion for them. Mercedes have not been the vehicle they once where since Chrysler bought them out in '99 (I think). Granted they drive nice and look sexy but are expensive to keep up and have mechanicle problems. Another vehicle you should look at is Nissan 350Z. Its not known as a luxury vehicle but it is very comfertable and drives very nicely. Also the convertable draws the ladies very nicely. Another vehicle I think someone mentioned is the Honda S2000, unless your a 2ft tall midget that is not the vehicle for you.

noticed you don't drive cars. BMW > most cars today. especially when it comes to the 3 seris.
paddle shifters are only cool when they are REAL paddles. ones that hold gears at redline until you shift and shift hard and fast.

If you seriously consider an M car, be sure to test drive one with the SMG if you don't want the stick. I hear they've improved it, but the E46 M3's SMG transmission is not very refined. It's jerky and rough, but it sure is fast. Definitely sports oriented rather than commuter or even daily driver oriented.

The A4 is a much nicer car than the an equivalent 3 series BMW. And yes I've driven both.

nicer how? what exactly makes the car that much nicer? the fact that audi has a huge repretation for being terribly unreliable. my friend in fact has a a4 and hates the thing. said if he did more research that he would have chosen something else.
also if you are looking for a car that is numbed down, meaning that vague steering and unsettling ride. then yes the A4 is your car. i have never liked a audi car due to is drive. the 3 seris i have always liked due to their road abilities. i am a small car person, personally i want a car wieghing less than 3000pounds, but for a larger car, it is one of the best i have ever tested.
then refinement. i still find the bmw to be a notch better, though i still hate that little hand pod thing in the center consol. the audi's interior reminded me too much of my friends grandma's caddy. nothing bad, but nothing exciting either.
power, i tested the old BWM, not the newest one with the inline twin turbo'd 6. but i hear it is faster. hands down, there is a reason why there are more BMW's out there than Audi's. besides the audi reminds me too much of VW, though their new grills do give them a better chance of seperating themselves.

I would just pick up the new Z06 for 70 grand and have fun with that for a while.

Corvettes are nice - very nice. But, sadly, they are not a great commuting car. Too much work to drive, not enough extra space, not enough winter capabilities, etc. If I had an extra space in the garage, then maybe (assuming I could get it past the wife, which I couldn't), but as it is the Corvette will remain my teenage fantasy.

I actually agree with dark side on something, wow. But yes BMW>Audi. Audi's reliability has come up in recent years, but they still make a damn heavy car. BMW had been sliding bit in the horsepower game, but the new twin turbo should change that. I have yet to drive the new 3series, but the last E46 model was great. BMW has it all over Audi in my book even when you just compare the handling, feedback from the steering, and the way it puts power to the road(RWD or rear biased AWD) Audi is still a fancy VW. If BMW would offer AWD with the 2 door models or get away from the heavy cars and bring the 1 series (which I could actually espire to own) over here, that'd be a great move.

Lots of my friends swear by Audis, but I have to agree with red/darkside that I far prefer BMW. I am not aware of the reliability issues so much, but I find the Audi design uninspiring, and the 3 is clearly a better drive than the A4, and the 5 is better than A6. Haven't driven the A8 to compare, but a friend of mine has one and loves it (although I note that another friend has a VW Phaeton, which is essentially the same car, and paid thousands less.
Audis are nice cars, but IMO far inferior to BMW and M-B.
And red - the 1s are really really cool. I wouldn't hold my breath for them to come here, though.
But (granted these are older), you might look into the old stubby 3s. Don't remember the designation... a cousin of mine has one and it is the zippiest thing. Total blast to drive.

You mean the E36 318ti hatchback?
That's what i'm driving now. Fun little car, with a few things that could have been better but would have increased the price. It's a tad underpowered, but if you keep it wound up that's not much of a problem. The rear suspension is the same as the older E30 3 series and Z3, which isn't that great, and the leg room and rear visability aren't great, and the seats suck. I do have enough leg room, barely, and the rear vis is as good a convertable with the top up. It also gets 32mpg and has a roundel on it. My dad and my aunt are the only people I know who actually bought the things. I'll buy my aunt's if she ever sells it. It has better seats and a slightly bigger engine than ours. If they'd imported it with the 2.3L six it would have sold, my dream is to buy one and do an M3 engine/suspension conversion and have a sleeper from hell.

My Lex is old... 1995. But I've had her forever. I actually pulled her out of the garage last week and my inspection ran out in March just to give you an idea of how long she sat. I am sending he to the body shop to get some small spider cracks touched up and then I think she will be up for sale... cheap.
I do want a Vette now. There are several places around here offering '07 Baselines for sub-$40K. I would go with a "older" Z06 but I think the 400hp of the baseline will be fine for me now... I don't race very much and if I do it isn't in a street car. My other option is a C5 (pre-2K5) Vette Convertible which would be awesome for those long Texas Hill Country road trips.
Anyway, here are a couple pics... besides Intake and Exhaust, no engine mods but, it is the same engine as a non-turbo Supra so its not like it doesn't move. Most of the changes were body, wheels and tires (19X10 (r) and 19X8.5 (f)), slight lowering, Veilside kit direct from Japan, Toyota Aristo tail lens, custom interior, and a USAC/IASCA winning Sound Quality sound system.

I forgot you had an old E36. Woot, old bimmers rule. I've been wanting to get an E30 as a complete toy car for around 1k, and just have fun with it.

Bmw already has. The new E92 07 BMW 328xi 2 door coupe is awd. I think the new 335i turbo will eventually get awd in the coupe. And I too, look forward to the 1 series. Audi has the A3, why can't bmw just bring the 1 here!?!?!

Sammy, I don't really consider E36 to be "old", but I'm probably off base here. Anything that looks like a shoebox(2002's-E21 and E30 3series) or a shark(2.5 and 3.0 coupe, and 6 series) is old in my book, and well, usually better. E36 is a bit too everyday.

That's a pretty fair evaluation. I personally don't know how you find 3 series BMW refinement better than an A4's, but I will respect your opinion. The 3-series interior is sparse and cheap feeling compared to an A4's (I'm comparing leather to leather), and has a much better fit-to-finish feel. I know I'm not the only person who thinks this. The reliability issue I have heard of, but I haven't heard of much complaining from the owners(other than your friend). VW = Audi, so that speaks to both reliability and why they look the same.
For the power, the A4 with the 2.0T was a bit slower of the line than the inline 6 (maybe 5) of the 3 series, but in the mid power range it was noticably quicker with less lag. And Audi did a fantastic job with the Turbo lag issue. I have driven the A4 with the V6 Quattro, and that was an awesome ride. It was smooth, very fast, and had ample acceleration all around. I haven't driven a 3 series that didn't have the 200hp inline 6 (maybe 5).
If I were to choose between an equally equipped A4 and 3 series, I will choose the A4 2/3 times. This is exactly what I plan to do one day soon, and I have been back and forth between the two cars endlessly. I just find that fit to finish, the A4 is a nicer car. If I were going to buy a BMW, I would buy a real one, and go for a 5 series, which are very nice cars. I feel like there is too much of a drop off from 5 series to 3.
You mentioned why you don't see as many A4's as 325s, I think that directly correlates to how many are produced, and to where the dealerships are located.
So, this is just how I feel.
