So last week I was awaiting for my paycheck to come in because I was down to $5 in my checking account. I get a $675 paycheck, take $100 cash and dump the rest into the checking account.
Saturday night I go to the ATM and lo and behold, there's over $1100 bucks in there, as opposed to the $500 odd I was expecting.
I went to the bank this morning, and the teller who was there is a friend of mine, turns out she looked up my account and made a $620 deposit for someone into my account instead of his.
So, I'm back where I belong, and to be perfectly honest with you, I never thought about NOT telling them.....even though they'd have never figured out where the money went, since from the bank standpoint it looked like a legitimate deposit on my account.
*sigh* Honesty bites, but maybe I'll get out of a few weeks in purgatory for this one.

I have a sneaking suspicion that that's going to be the popular sentiment around here.
I don't regret it.

Thats awesome but I would of did the same thing. I wouldnt want to spend the money that I actually dont have. To me it seems like something could go wrong if I spend that money.

I would have had to tell them too... I'd have been constantly nervous, waiting for the day they figured it out and emptied my bank account at the most inconvenient time...

I doubt I would have said anything, because I would have more than likely chalked it up to an incompetent worker pressing the wrong buttons as they entered the amount deposited.

If I would have said anything, it wouldn't have been under any moral grounds probably. I would just be scared I would spend it and they would notice the error and demand money back that I didn't have...
If I saw a guy drop his wallet I would give it back, and I have before, but for some reason I couldn't see myself bringing that one up.

I would have checked in a non-suspicious way, but only to make sure I can really spend the money.

that happened to me once but the bank would have eventually caught their mistake, they always do. I had no idea what had even happened and I recieved a letter that stated they had withrdawn money from my account and I called to ask why and they said it was because they made a deposit into my account that wasnt supposed to go there.

Seriously though, I've been going through hell for the last three years on behalf of a girl who is in a really bad situation at home, and who I happen to love. I also have real problems not helping people out, even when they absolutely don't deserve it. And I saved a kitty from a tree yesterday(seriously). I'm not a bad person, I'm just going through way too much financially not to take advantage of a stroke of luck like that. It's not like the bank wouldn't have had to give that person their money, so it's not like I'd be hurting some stranger who might need the money more....The bank would just have to pay for their screw up. Not exactly kickin babies here.
ps You've got a booger, but I'm sure you saw that.

Believe me man, they would find it. I am a teller and I can assure you every single transaction is documented and carefully looked over. You could have possibly gotten away with it for a couple weeks but eventually it would be found and dealt with though you wouldn't be in any sort of trouble because it wasn't your fault.

Yup. My wifes a bank manager. This happens more often then you would think. The error would have been found and the account would have been corrected. IF you spent the money, you would have in effect overdrawn your account. You would be subject to alot of fees and headaches.

If you represent the general populace, then yes, this IS a requirement.
to be honest though, I lost my wallet about 2 years ago and had it returned with everything still in it, money, credit card, social security card, etc etc etc.
A few years ago I would have thought about not saying anything, but you can't NOT return a favor like that.

Good job Reb.
For those you say they would take it up? They would have just made the situation even worse on themselves.
I work in a bank and used to be a teller and a Customer Service Rep before moving to the department im in now. This happened on a couple of occasions and the way it always worked out was the original owner of the money got there money and the person who unintentionally recieved the money had it removed from their account whether they had it or not. Differences like these are very easy to find because you can either search the electronic journal for a deposit amount or just look at the customers receipt if they have it to see what account it went into. Once they figure it out the will just call you and tell you what happened and let you know there taking it out. If you ignore their calls, they will just take it out of your account.
Now if you have enough money in your account, thats fine.....youll just lose the money that wasnt suppose to be yours. But if you went out and bought something and dont have enough money in your account, then your account will be in the negative when they take it back. If you dont get it into the positive, the bank will then charge your somewhere around a $50 closing fee. Report you to a company called Chex Systems which basically tells every other bank that you owe <insert bank name> money and not to open an account for you.
Either way youll have to give the money back so its just that much easier to give it back.

needless to say, it was fixed quick
