I was having a discussion about guns 'n stuff today. My co-discussor declared herself so anti-gun that she had a bumpersticker that read "if guns were outlawed, only outlaws would have guns".
Me = stunned disbelief.

I tried. She disagreed with my interpretation of the bumpersticker, and clearly thought I was being an idiot.
Only when I pointed out that the bumpersticker was an NRA favorite did make an impression, and even then she really thought her interpretation was correct.

Tell her to replace "outlaws" with "bad people that want to harm innocent people who cannot protect themselves." If she has any intelligence at all, she should be able to make the connection within 15 minutes.

Heh. It was persuasive speech night. Some kid did one anti-gun control.
He had a chart that showed that in cities with more gun control (Las Angeles, D.C, New York) there were many more homicides as compared to the cities with lowest gun control, all of which were podunk towns in Idaho and North Dakota.
He asked for any questions, and I asked if he realized that the higher homicide numbers were from a higher population, and had nothing to do with gun control.
Silence, followed by "I guess so"
I high-fived in my head.

I did a whole speech on anti-gun control. I thought it was quite convincing. If I find it, I'll have to post it.
Of course, that would be my stand, since I'm a gun nut.

I could care less about gun control, IMHO if you take the guns away people will use knives, the people with the longer knives will win, you take the knifes away people will use bats, so on and so forth.

you think he'd be smart enough to get the ratios for it. such as for every certain a number of people in areas with strict gun control this many people are killed. and vice versa.

Another fine example of emotion driving an agenda over information. This young lady just sees the world through the colored glasses she preferes and will accept no other opinion or even simple point of fact.
Gun Control, well there is an Admendment to the Constitution, and individuals here state that the constitution must be protected, but now feel it should be selective. We must protect the 1st Admendment, but must abolish the 2nd, open the door folks and the intent of the 2nd Admendment will become more evident.
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
The intent of this is not only to protect from foriegn invasion but oppression also from the government the founders were designing. Once the populace no longer has a means to revolt, means government no longer needs to fear the wrath of the people.

OS - I think you missed the point.
Mbro - no law school (or college) for her.
And on a separate note, I despair some more today. At the risk of seeming inaccurately arrogant - I was at BK (love Whoppers), and gave the cashier a crisp $100 bill for my $6.73 bill. The cashier incorrectly entered $20 into the cash register, so the register calculated my change ($13.27) based on that.
The cashier realized his error, and proceeded to grab pen and paper to figure out how much more change I was owed for my $100. He knew how much change I was owed on a $20, but had to calculate how much extra for the $100. He eventually gave up and grabbed a calculator.
*sigh*

A couple of serious comments, just to be a buzzkill.....
1. OS, I'm not a big gun control advocate. I think they are just about right as they are and any kind of ban would just be a waste since criminals don't really care if something is illegal to have. I will ask you though, do you not see how, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free
State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be
infringed.", could be interpreted as the right to militias, as opposed to the right of each individual American to own a firearm?
2. Kris, the whole A-bomb thing is very debatable. I'm not really sure where I stand on the issue myself really. Saying that we shouldn't have nuked Japan in no way puts you on the same level as this idiot girl.....

Maybe it's just me, but when I'm running cash registers that do all the work for you, I tend do space out, shut my mind off, and just read the register and push some buttons. I'm so spaced out that if I mess up, I forget the concept of basic arithmetic.

The problem with dumb people is that they vote.
But to follow ryan's tangent:
.Ryan, however you want to interpret "militia", how the founding father's felt about private ownership of firearms seems to speak for the intent of the ammendment. The supreme court allowed a ban on sawed-off shotguns saying they do not have "a militia application" but upholds the banning of fully automatic rifles. Go figure. banning felons from owning firearms certainly is constitutional, so I have no problem with background checks, but IMO any law-abiding citizen should be allowed to buy anything that doesn't fire an explosive round that's over 20mm.
As much as I dislike Micheal Moore, I didn't hate bowling for columbine and didn't really think it came off as being really anti-gun. However, in his recent open letter to the GOP he stated that the democrats weren't gping to take away anybody's hunting guns, but there's no reason people should be able to own automatic rifles(he really means semi-automatic, which a layperson does not understand) or handguns and they should all be confiscated.
I really hope another assault weapons ban isn't on the democratic agenda this session, but something tells me they never really learned from how hard that bit them in the ass in 2000. I'm also frustrated that the supreme court is too wussy to take any second ammendment cases.

Same here, If I'm ever running a register all im thinking about is getting the overflow of people out quickly so I can go back to stocking.
And If I'm actually ever scheduled to run the register for any amount of time, I pay little attention to whats actually going on.

On the founding fathers thing.....They just got done righting a rebellion, people back then used their guns regularly in order to survive, and they didn't have guns with near the level of lethality as we do now. While I look back to the founders on almost every issue, I'm not sure their decision is fit for our time......Again, I'm not anti-gun, don't eat my face, I'm just providing an argument....
Oh and I really doubt that the Dems will go after any kind of gun laws any time soon. Not only is the party full of moderates now, but that would be about the very most stupid thing they could possibly do when they have so much political capital to use/lose.....'Course, while I agree with most of their ideology, we all know how the Dems have a habit of pull defeat from the jaws of victory....
