need an opinion

i am selling something on ebay but i don't want to make less than 20-30 dollars, there is 3 days left

no bids so far so i figure i need to change something.

should i keep it at the starter price $20-30 and hope that someone bids?

or

Should i move it down to like 99 cents and set a reserve price of $20-$30?

you'll get what it's worth

i always put my stuff at a starting bid of $.01 w/ no reserve.

if you're worried about it, set a reserve and have a low starting bid

This may sound nerdy, but do you have any gaming centers where people go and play? If so, suck up your dignity and try to sell it there.

uh, i see a mods opportunity to give carl a strike.. posted what he's selling and one link has been removed.

but carl, on ebay you hardly get the price that your looking for when your selling an item. wait as it goes, people tend to bid last minute for an item.  and watchers aren't always buyers, some times they want to sell the same thing so they watch to see how much it will go for before they put theirs up for sale..

Yep.  Reserves are for little girls.  If you want a set price, try the local classifieds.  Ebay is for market pricing.

people will wonder if you keep raising or lowering the prices. just keep it at the $1 mark, and see what happens. and if the reserve isn't met then you know that people aren't interested this week for the item.  because you can always try again another time

Carl here is what you do:

Lower the bid price to 1$

Get a second ebay account.

Bid on your own item for around 20$.
(People tend to run from items that have reserve prices because    they seem so high to begin with but when you start bidding on an item and you have to continue bidding higher and higher to beat another buyer it make your item seam valuable and people become attached to it.)

So if someone bids higher than 20$ before near the end of the auction you can bid back higher like now bid 25$ -30$ or so to see if you can get more for it.

Don't bid too much and too high in the last seconds because you don't actually want to win your own item, because then you have to pay ebay fees for selling the item (which are nothing for at $20-30 item, but even still).

Wait actually, even if you do win your own item, you don't even have to pay yourself (your seller account) with your buyer account for the item.  This would mean you wouldn't have to pay for ebay fees with your 1st account (seller account) if you don't want, because you could always report that your 2nd account didn't pay and ebay would refund your ebay fees.

What phil is suggesting is not only in direct violation of Ebay policy, it is also a crime.  Yes, crime - as in jail time.  Granted a $20 shill-bidding scheme is unlikely to get any attention, that is nevertheless what it is.  It is fraud, and it it illegal.  People go to jail for auction fraud all the time.

I sell tractor loaders and parts on ebay a little, what ive found is that if you try to go on there and sell some stuff you are not gonna get a good price on the first few things you sell, you need to build a rep. Lower the price and after that theirs not much you can do.

Ya I have never sold any thing on ebay yet.  I was going to get a ps3 and sell it and do that but I never ended up getting a ps3 so I only have one account but I always buy stuff off of ebay and I have friends that told me about doing this.

So considering I have never done it and that you could go to jail you are right it is probably not a good idea.

Ok I have a question what is the difference between going and doing this with your own account and having a friend do it for you. It seems like this scheme is probably happening everywhere on eBay

My best friend was the one who told me about it and he said he gets his other friends to do it for him all the time.

There would be no proof of fraud, cause the friend (of they accidentally win the auction) could say they paid with cheque or money order or they just simply don't have to pay and can still change the status of the payment from unpaid to paid under their "my ebay" page (without even paying) (and they don't even have to do that either to complete the transaction) because the buyer and seller can still give each other positive feedback and then the transaction is basically over.

And then the seller would make a new listing of the same item and try selling it again. (If their friend accidentally won it) Easy as pie.

Why would ebay whine about that anyway, they get to keep your listing fees and your selling fees (even if your friend wins the item,  because no one would admit to fraud to not pay a $1 or so selling fee - depending on price).

Plus the selling fees are higher because your friend bid a price that is high to the price you wanted.  And therefore the ebay selling are a little higher.

I don't see how ebay could prove it (unless the same friend did it over and over for many of your random auctions), therefore I don't think ebay cares if it's done this way, cause they can't do anything and because they (ebay) ends up making more money because of it.

Plus ebay will make even more if your friend won it because you will likely re-list it and then have to pay fees again.

Just because you can get away with it doesn't make it ok.

And the http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/online/auctions.htm - Federal Trade Commission doesn't like it.

Ya it seems like there is no way to catch this act, unless the same accounts are doing it all the time then they might be able to do anything. And eBay probably doesn't like it because it will just make the buyers unhappy and then if enough of it happens people will stop bidding. I know that, that will never happen but I'm just saying.

that people will stop bidding... and you say that there will actually always be bidders.

So if you're sure it won't actually happen then what are you really saying? Nothing maybe?

1 - 1 = 0, does it not?

Posted By: Rambino

Not only is shill-bidding a crime, but people DO get caught and WILL get caught.  It is not nearly as hard to spot as you think.  Ebay has a significant fraud department, and spend a lot of effort to catch exactly this type of scheme.

While people often do get away with it, just like people get away with other crimes, that doesn't mean that people don't get caught.

Auction fraud is just that - fraud.  It is illegal and immoral, and there is a very good chance of getting caught.

Look up Kenneth Walton while you are at it.  Granted that's on a different scale, but it is real nevertheless.

Because eBay has so much stuff on there site and so many people buy/sell stuff daily that even if people do figure out that this is happening im sure they won't go away from buying stuff on eBay. Im sure eBay catches these people all the time but it is hard to catch this act if the person only does it once or twice because it won't raise any flags. This is one of the reasons I just use BIN

How long it takes depends on the buyer.  Some pay fast, some pay slow.

No. the guy(more than likely a minor or an adult with a very insufficient education) is bluffing, or has way to much money and has lawyers at his disposal...In which case he wouldn't care about $10.

$10. That's $5 per lawyer.
