The church my mom goes to teaches that Muslims are evil, and like the good sheep she is, she believes every word. These  preachers at these churches telling the loyal sheep that other religions are evil is what causes crap like 9-11. You get one nut-bag with a loyal following who shoves his or her perverted views of whatever religion they claim to follow onto the people that trust them, and it doesn't take much to make a otherwise normal person a fanatic. My mom is a nice person, but if her "preacher" keeps telling her how evil Islam is, and she keeps believing him, he could easily sell an idea like that to her. Hell, he could probly do it now.

On the other side of the coin, if people didn't follow religions, there would be some other way for crazy people to get a following. Religions also are capable of helping people through their lives with the belief that things will be better later, but the amount of times religion has been used as an excuse for things like 9-11, the crusades, and so on, has made me very un-trusting of religion. The concept of a higher power is fine with me, but religion seems like a total load of crap, if that makes any sense.

Edit: Actually, I think I'll re-phrase this a little. Religions are fine, religious extremists of any kind, following any religion, suck.

i think that it's totally true.  Hell, when I see a person who looks middle eastern, sure I wonder to myself, "what would i do if something went down", but that doesn't stop me from treating them with the same respect that I do other people. If I'm kinda nervous around people I don't know, least of all muslims, I try not to show it.  But yeah, I wonder sometimes.

someone on my dads side of the family came from lebanon.

its the small place right above isreal. i dont know much about it and thats the 1st time ive ever seen it on a map...

anyways i dont have any contact with that side of the family and the bloods been thined out enough that i dont have dark skin(but i can get one heck of a tan and dont burn) i have enough irish blood in me that i have a light brown hair and blue eyes but i just have alot of it. i was born into a catholic family but grew up christian.

if you meet me on a day i shave you wouldent even think twice about it. the only 2 things i have that tie me to that part of the world are my name and the amount of hair i have.

but anyways. i planned a trip to disney for christmass and my gf (100% blonde haird blue eyes irish) doesnt understand how i know ive already been "randomly" selected for extra serches and why i want to get to the airport early.

when i go through airport security i make sure i strip EVERYTHING off right down to my jeans and t shirt but still manage to set off the metal detector (even my boots go in the little tub)

needless to say when i get married il probly be the one changing my name

Why is it alright to single out every muslim? I cannot see my friend wearing a cresent shaped tattoo the guy is as white as possible but becuase he has a faith in a religion with an extremist sect he should be subject to racial/ethnic profiling? Look at christianity and tell me there arn't extremist sects to this religion. If that's what's right then christians should have to wear the cross on their foreheads.

The power to kill each other on a large scale is still relatively restricted to national governments. That's why we haven't self-selected ourselves for extinction yet.

march 2002, isreal, 63 killed

october 2002 indonesia, 202 killed

october 2002 moscow, hundreds killed

may 2003 morocco, 41 killed

may 2003 saudi arabia, 34 killed

november 2003 turkey, 60 killed

march 2004 madrid, 191 killed, 1,800 injured

September 1-3 2004 russia, gunmen take over 1,000 hostages at a school, 330 dead, 800 injured... mostly little children.

July 2005, publit transit system bombings in london...52 civilans killed, 700 injured

July 2006, Train bombings in india... 209 killed, over 700 injured.

Those are just the major ones, people die every day from terrorist attacks not just in the middle east but all over the world. Like, how would you define a terrorist? couldn't it be the gangs all over including america? The people who bring guns and shoot up a school? Wow, i'm pretty sure that's also in america. Murderers? plenty. rapists? tons.  99.99% of people in north america, when they talk about terrorists, they mean terrorists from the middle east.

Don't just tell me that you were talking about your country only.... 911 changed security all over the world not just in the US.

Oh and to everyone else: i don't hate americans as this may seem, i do not downplay september 11th as it was a tradgedy for sure. i'm just pissed at people who think that while their country has been safe, the rest of the world also has.

Valid points, however, the real argument he is making is that no large scale terrorist attack similar to 9/11 has happened since. And to tie his post back into the OP's, he was speaking generally for attacks on American soil. Let's look at things a bit more dynamcially before putting words into other peoples' mouths? Not to mention let's get to work fixing your sarcasm detector...

While my rant about being a supervillain was fairly in jest, the idea behind it comes from an honest feeling that humanity does not deserve to survive if it cannot mend its ways. I won't mourn the loss of a human race that seems so bent of self destruction.

If we can't live as better people, then we can't complain that the world sucks. I want to be a better person. I want to be considerate to those around me. No matter how many times I get stepped on for it.

No.

The article states that there are 1.3 billion Muslims in the world. I don't know any better so we'll just go with that number. The number of violent extremists, and not all extremists are violent, is not a significant number of that total. There are plenty of crazy white, black, or asian people. A great deal of murder and death has been dealt by people of all races. A Muslim praying in an airport is not going to prepare me to deal a beat down any more than a Christian praying in the same place.

If there is somebody clearly acting shady, I don't care what color their skin is. It doesn't take a Muslim to start trouble.

No counting embassies.  US soil.  Real US soil.

And the answer, as best as I know, is just that - two.  About a decade apart, same target.

Two in total, ever, and a decade apart.  Bragging about how we have gone five years is somewhere between silly and disingenuous.

That does in fact make you a racist - at least to this point.  Sorry.

The history of violence in this country doesn't give you anywhere near a logical basis for being afraid of a "muslim-looking person".  (BTW - I wonder if you can tell the difference between a Middle Eastern Arab and a Middle Eastern Jew or Christian?  Do you even realize how ignorant "muslim-looking" sounds?  Most muslims in the US look just like Christians)

Most terrorist attacks in this country have been committed by American white people, with a smattering of black terrorism thrown in for good measure.

We're forgetting pearl harbor. But in honesty muslim terrorist attacks, beyond the USS Cole, which in my opinion we should've slammed them for right then and there, and the two on the towers, are few and far between. Muslims are not the problem, extremist are, not even muslim extremist are the problem, christian extremists are. The muslim hatred for christians is deep rooted back to the crusades. They learned to solve religious differences with violence when christian crusaders ran through them, again not all muslims, muslim extremists. I've had and will have pleanty of muslim friends. Two of my good friends come from opossing sides, sunni and shiete and neither have a problem with each other.

Pearl Harbor was during war and it was a country who did it not a terrorist group. Yes I know muslim looking person does sound ignorant but I wasn't sure how else to describe them. I have an uncle who is muslim and not to long ago he was under FBI watch because they thought he was giving money to terrorist groups. He was never arrested. He is just a rich muslim man who gives a lot of his money to his church.

I believe that I am not a racist just because I get nervous in a situation. I am not a very good when it comes to flights I get very nervous and when 9/11 happened it just made me look at people more carefully. Just because when I see someone (ON A PLANE) that looks middle eastern or "muslim" not sure how you guys want me to describe them, I get nervous doesn't make me a racist.

Just becuase Pearl Harbor was during a war and we were attacked by a country does not mean it wasn't an act of terrorism. Pearl Harbor was a safe Harbor. We were not at war, we did not want to make war, we were currently at the time proposing peace with japan, and they attacked us while we were at rest in order to instate fear and anger amoung America, it was an act of terrorism.

I'm with ric on this one...   If the distinction between war and terrorism is to have any meaning, Pearl Harbor clearly has to be considered an act of war.

Pretty much, yes.  I don't think states can commit terrorist acts.  You can have state-SPONSORED terrorism, but not regular old state terrorism.

Otherwise all war is just terrorism.

Pearl Harbor it was a country that used there planes and ships to attack us. 9/11 and the other attack on the world trade center, were by a terrorist group, that hijacked our commercial planes to attack us. At least Japan had the balls to not go and hide unlike most terrorist groups that attack and then go back and hide

I wonder if he could tell the difference between an Arab, a Persian, a Sikh, a Tajik, or a Berber. All of which are different "middle eastern" looking ethnicities, one of which is not even in the middle east.

By the way, none of the above listed peoples really like it when ignorant Americans lump them in to "Them damned A-rabs."

As far as "terrorist looking" goes, according to reports from 9/11, the hijackers were wearing "impeccable clothing." Not turbans and robes.

So what is the criteria for being "Muslim looking?" Dark skin and hair?

I really dont no what they were wearing on 9/11 but I feel like I speak for a lot of Americans that when they get on a plane which is for some an already nervous time if they see "muslim looking people" they get even more nervous and think what should they do if something happens.
Im sure tons of people have no idea what all the different "middle eastern" ethnicities look like.

No it wasn't. It STARTED a war.

We were deeply engaged with Japan in trying to prevent going to war with them for the longest time.

Pick up a history book or watch TORA TORA TORA.

having spent five years learning the trade of teaching social studies, and my education having spanned the post 9-11 world, I've been engaged in learning about, and teaching about Islam.

These generalizations that we are making are as moronic and as dangerous as anything else we could do.

.Ryan is right, the general populace is ignorant, belief that Islam is evil is rampant in out society, and its doing much more harm than good.

On the other had, racial profiling, while not having much merit kind of has a perverse logic to it, at least the basic principal does:

If a woman is raped, and the only thing she can say about her attacker was that he was a tall blonde male.....why should the police question short bald men? Or women. Or anyone BUT tall blonde men?

Racial profiling takes that two or three steps further. If Islamic terrorists blow up planes, why don't we question all Muslims?

I'll be the first to admit, No, I don't get a sinking feeling in my stomach when I'm around a Muslim, or a person of Middle eastern origin. Why the hell should I?

So much for judging people individually.

Adolf would be proud of us.

And I think you are absolutely correct.  You do speak for many Americans.

But that doesn't make it right.  This is the type of hysteria that lead to a poor Sikh getting shot and killed after 9/11, and numerous other "muslim-looking" fellows around the country getting threatened or assaulted.

The answer isn't to institute racist policies.  The answer is to open your mind.

This, of course, is a favorite argument of proponents of profiling.  But there is a major difference between this and true profiling:  In this hypothetical we are looking for an actual criminal.  The more proactive (and odious) form of profiling involves not waiting for a specific crime (or threat of specific crime), but instead treats an entire class of people as if they are about to commit one.

OK, I didn't read all the posts in this thread but that is because I am not commenting on this thread to argue with anyone, I just wanted to state my thoghts on that radio talk show host that started all this mess; he is a Nazi, plain and simple.
Now he may not call himself a nazi ( I didn't read the entire report, nor did I feel I needed to in order to prove my point) but he is calling for the same stuff that the nazis did. What was the first thing the nazis did before sending the Jews and other " undesirables " off to concentration camps? The forced them to wear arm bands whith the star of David on it.
           Now my point in making this long and most likely pointless statement ( like I said, somone may have already made this point earlier in the thread, or the guy may openly be a nazi, I didn't read everything in the thread) is to say that we need to learn from history and not tolerate Nazism in one form or another, small or large, and remember the saying;
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I appologize if I have waisted your time.

Methinks you probably should have read some of the posts before posting that...

Or at least the entire article.

Exactly. I was a bit hasty in ending my last post (lunch break was over) When there is a specific crime committed, then taking the facts and using what we can to find the guilty party is fine.

But the populace is starting to hand a bum wrap to those who are innocent of all crimes, just because they 'look like' they MIGHT commit a crime.

If that argument carries any weight, then many of you who posted in the "post your pic again" thread are in a lot of trouble.

FYI, here are some various countries with strong Muslim presences...

Indonesia- world's most populous Muslim country; 86% majority. South east Asian ethnicities.
Pakistan, India, Afghanistan- South west Asian ethnicities.
Iran- Aryan descendency
Bosnia- Caucasian
Chechnya region of Russia- Caucasian
Several provinces of China have a muslin majority. Chinese ethnicities
North Africa- Arab, Berber ethnicities
East Africa- somalia, etc. Negroid ethnicities
Sub Saharan Africa- Negroid ethnicities

Most western nations have Muslim minorities of any conceivable ethnicity as well. So tell me again, what do Muslims look like?

Seems like they look like anyone on this forum...

I know an arab. Who is a retired cop. He happens to instruct my modern policing class. He says a lot that he wish they racially profiled arabs. he didnt say muslims. he said arab. and he is arab. he says he has seen old ladies get a heavy search at the airport then he almost walks in. thats on arabs view. not all of them but i tend to agree to a certain extent.
profile a little but not a lot. like said before. not all muslims are of arab decent. i'm not saying stop anyone who looks arab and question them. just be smart about everything you do. if anyone is acting fishy investigate it. arab descent or not.

The best part is. This is supposed to be some holy war. Look at Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. They are all relatively the same in one way or another. lots of similarities. Granted I dont know a whole lot about each religion, but from what I've read and whatnot at school they are relatively close. Whats to say an American, White, Christian, couldnt be a Christian Fundamentalist? Causing Terror in America for some reason? Just playing devils advocate here. But all merit for profiling sucks. Go with whats happening in the world at the time of profiling. Right not the majority of islamic fundamentalists are of arab descent. Profile the arabs. If it becomes the whites. Profile them. Or did I just ramble on about a bunch of crap?
