I was at a buddies house all day after work today putting in his new system in his truck. And after that we were just kicking it by the fire hangin out, when his dad asked if we wanted a sandwhich. We're pretty hungry so we say yeah. Well he was out of turkey and bread and he was going to go to the store get some but he'd been drinking for a good while and was buzzin' rather well so I told I'd take my truck and go get it. I was in the store for a good while, (Saw my ex there and we just got caught up on things and reministed(sp?) about the old days.) well i get out of the store, and i see my interior light is on. So I'm like, **edited** . So I grab my knife and kinda hurry over, I get to my truck and my passenger side door is open all the way, and while it was open somebody kicked it. So it bent the hinges and the handle was almost kissing the parking light. I started freaking out because I had stuff inside, thinking somebody stole it. My ipod was still hooked up to the stereo and a wad of bills still in the glove box. But my brand new XD-40 9mm was gone from under the seat. I thought about calling the cops, but the gun was bought second hand for 100 bucks so it might be hot, and I'd rather not get caught with those charges. And If I claimed my door and fender damage my rates would sky rocket. So If I find out who did it, most likely I'll be spending the night in jail.

Savage that's pretty heavy, whoever took that thing is looking to shoot someone in a bad way and if they link that gun to you it's over. It's best to tell the cops now to avoid murder charges.

You are an idiot.  Why do you need a gun, especially when it seems like you're boned just for owning it.  If you use it legitimatly, why the hell is it in your car.

Good job dumbass

I hate to be this way, but whatever happens is your problem dude. What in god's name does a 16 year old need with a handgun? First off, if I missed this in the post, sorry, but did your dad know you had a handgun in your truck? If he did, he's a dumbass. You were violating several laws by carrying it, and you're probably lucky that someone took it because if a cop busted you with it, you'd have jailtime and a record now. And if they commit a crime with it, it's your fault for carrying a possibly stolen handgun at 16 anyway.

More than likely it probably has someone's fingerprints all over it right now, and since you bought it hot, second hand, and underage, your name won't be near it. Hopefully the original owner filed it stolen, and he won't be the ass end of whatever irresponsibility has been invoked with this gun. What really irritates me about this is that it's 16 year olds that carry guns who are giving legal gun owners like me and the others on this forum bad names.

Whether it's true or not, I know several people under 21 that carry. In fact, I knew a few guys in high school who were 17 and carried. To top it all off, now we're 20,they're doing drugs, and still carrying. Then again, how are you going to be all badass ganster at 16 without your trusty stolen handgun. Gotta love teenage maturity.

While shens is a distinct possibility, I don't think that the gun ownership is particularly unlikely.

It is quite easy for people to buy guns without proper documentation, depending on where/how you live.  Back when I used to go to gun shows, I do not recall anybody ever doing any paperwork whatsoever.  And that's just the quasi-legitimate gun shows.  That's not even counting the punks in the alleys selling guns that they "found".

I agree. Theres too many holes in this story. Sure you can get a pistol from less then legal dealers, but its the other details in the story that leads me to the conclusion that hes lying.   If not then prove it, post a pic of the door, and also post the police report. I'd love to see it.

I still want to know how and XD-40 is a 9mm and not a .40 cal. Also why someone would illegally carry the weapon in their father's vehicle. Either it's shens, or someone was eventually going to get shot when they took their "toy" out to play with it.

So yeah, you're basically all kinds of screwed, utterly failed to get any badass cred by casually mentioning how you had a knife and you carry a gun, and now you get to explain to dad why you had a handgun in his truck.

Have fun with that, and while you're at it thanks for undermining the efforts of legitimate gun owners...

You learned the hard way that you should never leave valuables in plain view, never leave money or anything in the glove box and never ever purchase a fire arm illegally.

I hope you never buy a fire arm like that again unless you like some big guy calling you his biotch in prison.

Did you Dad know you had this gun?

So the gun isn't stolen, I left it at the friends house because we popped off a few at a racoon earlier that day, and the bastard would'nt tell me, so he kept me going that it was stolen. I called the person that I purchased the gun from and apperantly they where just having hard times and needed money. He gladly showed me the reciept to the gun. (Unless he stole the reciept as well as the gun) And who ever said that I'm cool because my dad drinks and I carry a knife, my dad has been sober for 13 years on the 26th of this month. And really, who doesn't carry a knife? The gun in my truck was a stupid idea, won't do it again. I wont carry pistols in my truck anymore. Rifles yes, there will always be a .308 behind the seat. You will be screwed if a cop ever searches your truck

It would have been hilarious if you went to the police station to report a stolen unregistered gun that was in your possession. The tippmann forum would have sent you some soap on a rope for a nice Xmas gift.

Apparently I suck at internet sarcasm...   *sigh*

But savage - your "explanation" doesn't make it any better.  Your gun is still illegal, even though the guy you illegally bought it from may have bought it legally.  Heck, that's TKD's point - most gun crimes start out as legal guns.  And beyond the illegal gun ownership, you proceeded to irresponsible gun ownership.

And while I recognize that keeping a loaded .308 (or .30-06 or 30/30, or whatever) handy in the truck is common in many parts of the country, that doesn't make that any less irresponsible either.  While relatively few crimes are committed with hunting rifles, there are plenty of accidents with those instead.

The single most compelling argument for not allowing gun sales to anybody at all is that irresponsible idiots like your "friend" and yourself keep selling them, losing them, giving them away, or having them stolen, thus feeding the criminals with all the guns they could ever need.  There is relatively gun smuggling into the US.  And why?  Because the crooks don't need to - all they have to do to get a gun is steal one from a "legitimate" gun owner such as yourself.

Generally those ones carry because there's plenty of empty space in their pants in which to fit a gun...

You will be screwed if a cop ever searches your truck

It would have been hilarious if you went to the police station to report a stolen unregistered gun that was in your possession. The tippmann forum would have sent you some soap on a rope for a nice Xmas gift.
Why wouldn't we just send him regular soap?

Despite the strong oder of shens in this whole thread, yet another lecture is in order. Your trucks is not a good place to store a firearm, loaded or unloaded. If you're not carrying a firearm, lock it up. If you go to take a cruise around the farm, bring the rifle. The only reason to keep it in the truck is sheer lazyness.

I've never understoof this whole thing about people leaving loaded pistols kicking around. A pistol belongs in a gun safe, on your hip or under your pillow if your head happens to be on said pillow. Nowhere else.

1) Dear God, the fact that you as a gun owner did not know where the hell your pistol was at all times is downright chilling. You just leave it willy-nilly at a friends house and have no idea you did? Not to bring up the whole gun control issue again, but you are a poster child for stricter laws.

2) The buying thing is sketchy, but I can almost buy it. I had a friend who sold some expensive hunting rifles because he ran low. It was not a cheap pistol. I don't see why the guy just did not sell it to a gun shop, that is a lot less liability than some back-alley deal

3) Keeping a rifle, if you watch livestock, I can understand. I just pray to God that you keep it unloaded, a trigger lock on it, and out of plain sight. Nothing screams "Hey kick the window in and steal me!" than a rifle propped up in the back

Yes, but rifles aren't registered like handguns are. You can buy/sell rifles all the time, and the government doesn't keep tabs on it. But a handgun is registered to it's owner. Therefore, the pistol had to be registered to the hero of the day here, but he's only sixteen. Even some guy who REALLY needs the money wouldn't be stupid enough to sell a pistol to some kid, and not remove his name from this gun's record...you need to be 21 to own a handgun...I don't see how he could have gotten away with reistering a handgun in his name at the age of 16.

Is this a federal thing? I wouldn't know since we already have to register pretty much everything in this state. Seems odd that handgun registration would have got by without a lot more noise by the NRA.

I don't get it(must be some kiddie code).   Anyhow its morons with guns that give the rest of the law abiding citizens a bad name.
We had some nutcase open up with an AR about a week ago. Now the good Mayor of that city wants to try and ban them. So I wonder what the mayor will do about the mutiple stabbings that happen on a daily basis. Ginsu could be in some trouble.

It wouldn't matter.

If you are not a criminal or have never had your fingers printed for a teaching job, federal job, etc.. they cannot trace your fingerprints because you are not in their system.

Who ever stole the gun obvisouly knows you have it. No one would break in, see the ipod skip it and go directly under your seat and grab the gun and nothing else.
