Honestly, how the hell is bud light america's number one selling beer.

It tastes like crap. I'd rather drink keystone light.......

There are so many beers that taste better and are even cheaper. What the hell america?

-----

I say this because someone left a case of budlight at my house after our new years party and the roomates and I drank a few laste night, all coming to the same conclusion. It's crap.

-------------

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

America has a lot of good beers, it's just the major name brand light ones that suck.

Not bad and cheap.

By not bad I mean I can afford to just get drunk off of it without cringing with every sip. If I want something I'll enjoy just for the sake of drinkng a beer I'd get something else. But when I want to get drunk PBR does an amazing job.

Miller Genuine Draft is the way to go, in my opinion.
I also like Miller Lite, but there's just something about MGD.
I can tolerate Bud, but that's probably because it's what just about everyone buys at parties, which is the only place I go to drink.

Now if you want some crazy, full-flavored beer, try IPI (don't remember what that stands for). It's like 10.5% and it's pretty good if you like a strong, thick beer.

To agree with MBro, America creates plenty of good beer, and a few great beers, it's just Bud that blows.

Oh I deffinitly agree, but the big name ones kind of ruin the image of american beer unfortunately.

Actually, I really agree. I deffinitly thought MGD was going to be another beer along the lines of bud, but was pleasently surprised. I will (and do) order it willingly on occasion.

I hate miller light. I'm not a big fan of mgd but I can stand it.

I think it's that I just don't like most of the major american brews. Let's just say I'm quite thankful for the mircobrew revolution that took place in the late 80's early 90's.

I enjoy lagers the most. But I also enjoy ales, pale ales, and some wheat beers. I just hate the light piss water.

Sam Adams for the american win btw.

Bud, Bud light, Miller light, and Coors light were all almost stripped of their titles as beers by the international association of brewers about 8 years ago. The ONLY reason that they got to keep the title of beer was due to the fact that a small contingent of brewers and tasters convinced the board that they needed to not only have a high-standard for beer, but a low-standard by which to judge things as well. Miller Genuine Draft, High-Life, and Coors Golden Banquet were all conspicuously absent from the list of those to be declassified as beer. Probably because they actually do have a taste.

As for the "micro-brews" such as sam adams, saranac, anchor, and others, I think they need to get away from the micro-brew image as they have all become large-scale breweries, though not as large as A/B or SABMiller. True they might have started out as micro breweries, but sam adams, for example, now produces over 1,000,000 barrels of beer annually, whereas "micro brew" refers to a brew produced by a brewery that makes no more than 15,000 barrels of beer annually.

Sam Adams isn't a good beer IMHO, too hoppy across the board. If you're going to make an IPA, make an IPA, don't make everything hopped to heck and then say you have a "lager" a "winter lager" and definately don't call the stout that you just dry-hopped a stout.....

Bud Light sells well due to marketing and the fact that it's common enough already. People will buy a keg of it for a party simply because it's watered down so much people will not have a real problem with it.

The guys I party with have recently started to buy more Keystone and see the light. Coors Light is better than BL, but it's ungodly awful if you get that dusty 30pack that's been sitting around a store for god knows how long. I beleive BL must be pre-skunked then watered down, so it doesn't get much worse.

We've got a good microbrew around here that seems to be getting pretty big, BBC. Good stuff.

Well people drink a lot of Bud light everywhere that I am. Its not very bad tasting and it gets you drunk. If you want to drink a few beers have something good like Blue Moon or Sam Adams or some micro's.
And thats why Bud Light is the Number 1 beer it gets you drunk and its pretty easy to drink

I'll try to find some linkage for you TKD, I'm not sure if that was the actual name of the gathering, but it did happen. Give me a day or two and I'll have some info for you. It was back in '99 when I started home-brewing. There was a huge to-do amongst the home-brewers associations when word got around. Most people supported the removal proposal in the home-brewer associations, but the commercial brewers and judges found merit in the argument to keep them in.

I agree 100%. It's by far the only large brewery that's putting out new beers every year some suck some are awesome but it's always good to try to find new flavors. Now how much we can water down the beer.

I myself perfer Ales and Lagers over philsners and other types of beer. I am starting to love Arrogant bastard Ale from the Stone Brewing Company. Microbreweries are still the source of Beer Gold in America.

Bud, Coors, Miller, etc are mainly to just get drunk off of. That why we drink them. That's the point of drinking in my opinion. Do I really like the taste of Jack? No, but I like the way it makes me feel...

But either way, all those sayng Budlight tastes like crap or urine...you'd have to have something to compare it to, so you consumed crap or urine at some point or you know somebody that has...both are somewhat disturbing.

I like the taste of Jack.  Liquor/Whiskey is really the only thing I drink.  Knob Creek is my personal favorite.

I'm happier with a cheap vodka like aristocrat than a premium beer.

Knob Creek tends to be a bit on the harsh side for me, don't get me wrong, it's a good bourbon, but there are superior ones out there for the same price, if not less. Woodford Reserve is one of the best Bourbons you can buy for a reasonable price. I'm also a big fan of Bulleit which is cheaper than dirt compared to most of your other mid-to-high end bourbons. My personal favorite though, is George T. Stagg. Un-cut Un-filtered Barrel-proof kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. The lack of filtering really brings out some wonderful notes of honey, vanilla, and a hint of citrus that is reminiscent of the finer single-malt scotches on the market. Not to mention the fact that it is aged for something like 16-18 years in oak which really mellows the harshness you find with less-aged varieties like bookers or knob creek. Last bottle of GTS that I had was 178.5 proof. That's 89.25% alcohol by volume for those who don't want to do the math. It's that strong, but still subtle and flavorful. Excellent stuff.

TKD said something about Guiness up there, and while I like Guiness, I don't think it's the end-all be-all of stout, even Irish stout for that matter. The body, while heavier than your average beer, seem watery in comparison to a good oatmeal or imperial stout like Samuel Smith's. Heck, I can think of some American porters that are heavier and more flavorful than Guiness. Mind you, I'd never turn down a pint that was offered, and I do drink it with regularity as I work in an Irish establishment. The one thing the Irish do very well, though, is Cider. If you've never had Magner's (Balmer's if you're in Ireland) you MUST try it. We're not talking fruity-piss-water like woodchuck, woodpecker, strongbow, hornsby's, ciderjack, or hard-core here. It's thick, heavy, ballanced (not to sweet not too sour) and not overly-carbonated. Great stuff!

Tallen,

Guinness is supposed to be a less-bitter, mild flavored, more drinkable stout. That is how it started. I mean, yeah, I have tasted some stouts about that could rip your face off, but I do not like them as much, they are way too heavy bodied and rich for my liking.

I like Guinness because it still has the body and taste of a stout without me wanting to die afterwords.

See, to me, it tends to be more bitter than most of the others I've had. The stouts I like are heavier bodied, but tend to be richer, more chocolate, less bitter-coffee. I can't stand truly bitter beer though, hence the fact I don't drink really hoppie stuff.

On that note, if you haven't had a chance to try a Scottish "Heavy" I think you'd like it! Belhaven and McEwan's make some that a phenomenal.

Oh, and all you Canadians, anyone drink Unibroue? La Fin Du Monde, Maudite, Raftman, and Blanche De Chamblie are some of my all-time favorites!

Then again, I do not very often drink beer. I am more of a cocktail person.

Well, how old are you, and how many other beers have you had? Thats a big factor. In highschool, I was ok with it, all my friends were/ are too, but as you get exposed to better beers, you start to write kokanee off as a bad beer. Not necissarely a bad thing, since you'll start to appreciate other beers even more then before.

Also not a fan of bitter beers, like Guiness. I can deffinitly understand why people would like it, it's deffinitly quality, but not my prefered taste. Theres beers I dont like cause they suck, and others I just dont prefer.

I'd try to find a middle ground personally. Something I can buy enough of to affect me, but decent enough that I wont curse my drinking it all night.

and it sucks

serious eh, hell me and all my buddies find it pretty darn good. to each his own i guess

Well, how old are you, and how many other beers have you had? Thats a big factor. In highschool, I was ok with it, all my friends were/ are too, but as you get exposed to better beers, you start to write kokanee off as a bad beer. Not necissarely a bad thing, since you'll start to appreciate other beers even more then before.

i'm 18, about 3 weeks till im 19 but everybody i usually drink with are 18 to 22, and yet most my buddies like it. I've probably tried a good 20-25 different kinds. mostly bigger companies though

Fat Tire  . . .

I do like a stout, like Guiness, but really it is liquid bread in a way.  It is a taste you have to appreciate.  Mic Golden Light is an ok beer for less, but I rarely buy it.  I really don't like light beer.  All my father will drink is Busch Light and it really upsets me.  He grew up on a farm in Colorado where they sold some of their barley to Coors, I never have understood why he likes Busch beer, essentially it is the same as Bud.

I actually don't drink a lot of beer.  More wine, because I mostly drink with a meal.  I like Cabernets but sometimes they are just too full bodied.  Reislings are very good and I have been suprised at the number of small wineries that are producing good wine at a very cheap price.

I honestly don't drink enough to know what that the majority of those are...

Anybody familiar with Diesel?  Bottle label looks like it was made of somebodys printer?  190 proof, serious stuff...

Good stuff. Ever try a Hemingway Daiquiri?

Nope! Sure haven't, but if you tell me what's in it, I'll give it a whirl!

3/4 oz. Lime juice

1/4 oz. Fresh squeezed Grapefruit juice.

1/4 oz. Maraschino Liqueur (A bitter cherry liqueur)

Top it off with a nice helping of light rum. Shake over ice, pour into normal Daiquiri glass.

To me, it is not as overpoweringly sweet as a normal Daiquiri (Ernest Hemingway was a diabetic), plus the sour of the grapefruit and the bitter of the cherry gives a very nice complexity, without it being overpowering.

One of my favorite cocktails.

Seriously, if you do buy beer at college, Keystone Light is 10.99 for a 30 pack, learn to love it.

None taken, I really don't see the point in getting offended by those who think straight grain is actually good for anything other than "purple Jesus" If you want to drink some GOOD grain, you need to visit some of the back-woods communities near my birthplace. I had some moonshine there that was better than any eau de vie I ever had while at The CIA.

Choop's right btw, it is a post about beer, so I'm not really being a fuzzy bit of cotton with a string. I don't sit around critiquing beer all day, I'm a chef, it's part of my job to know what I want to sell my guests at my restaurant. I'm sorry if your job doesn't include wine, beer, bourbon, scotch, and vodka tastings on a regular basis, but mine does.

Yeah.. Now it's made with Jersey city water. I haven't really noticed a difference in taste. Probably one of the biggest reasons I still like it is because it's $9 for a 12 pack.

Andy Wins!

Seriously though, go with a high-quality manhattan, woodford reserve bourbon makes for a really nice one. Chopin vodka, belvedere vodka, Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray Ten, ANY single malt scotch 18 years or older, side-cars... drink lots and lots of side-cars.

Tallen wins again.

Drink the highest quality and most expensive alcohol there. If they have Louis XIII drink that till they go bankrupt since it is $1300+ per bottle. My local liquor store sells it for 2,000 a bottle.

Good quality vermouth + Bombay Sapphire martini. make sure it is STIRRED. You will know if you have a expert bar tender if he holds a match to the lemon and twists it into the flame.
