I heard rumor about a 600HP ZL1, but has Chevy confirmed that one yet? All I've heard for sure is a V6 version with around 260HP and an SS version with an LS2 putting out 400HP. Possibly a Z-28 with a 300HP V8, a rumored second SS with the LS7 putting out 500HP, and the rumored ZL1 with a 600HP supercharged engine that has yet to be named, the same engine that is rumored to be in the new Corvette stingray.

I'd say it's more likely Chevy will have the V6, the Z-28, the SS with the LS2, and a ZL1 with the LS7. Chevy's probly going to want to keep that 600HP beast only in the vette, at least for a few years.

Everyone just happens to decide to make their new muscle cars retro right after the Mustang goes retro and does well.  Right.

Though I am hardly a Chevy fan, that Camaro doesn't look too entirely bad.

I'll have you know, the Chrysler Corp. started the retro fling, technically. Prowler? PT Cruiser? Both came out before the "New" retro'ed Mustang.

Edit: Saw the Camaro at the Houston Auto Show. The thing was dead sexy in real life. Camaro > Mustang any day of the week this year.

I'd even go so far as to say the LS7 Camaro > Shelby/Saleen 'Stangs...

So running for way over 200,000 miles and knowing that it will always start doesn't equate to a good engine?

sweet lord... every hardcore car guy in america right now would slap you so hard its not even funny. First off, Chevy's are very very durable, i know of several peoples chevy's who have made it 50,000 miles and are still going strong. they can handle a lot of power why do you think there are so many preformance products made for chevy engines? The fastest Honda that has ever been made, was basically just a honda chassis, and the engine, it ran 9's in the quarter mile... thats pathetic...

you know in The Fast and the Furious tokyo drift, they put a skyline engine in a mustang... well they didnt in reality, they tried but the engine wasnt powerfull enough to do much of anything... Just because an engine is more fuel efficient and for some reason people think they're dependable... doesnt mean they're good, engines in import cars actually break down a lot more then the engines in most domestics, bar none

Volvo engines for the win. 200+K miles, several as high as 600K. The 4cyls and the V6's are both really strong (and I know firsthand that the 4cyl's will take ~18psi of turbo boost with a minimum of modification).

And I for one like the new Camaro. It's not perfect, but I'd rather have a compromise than NOTHING. As long as we have more than just Mustangs (I like the Stangs myself, but when everyone has one.......).

Allright, Sneaky, your starting to fall. Fast.

- Pontiac Vibe = Toyota Matrix. It literally has the same engine...
- 50k miles equates to nothing.
- New Chevys are desentigrating. In quality and style (minus the new Camaro, however). I've honestly seen maybe 3 or 4 new body Impalas that weren't rent cars. I've heard of more problems with new GM products than any other company. Even our 2k4 Impala is starting to crap out on us, and we've had nothing but gruff from our Silverado.
- I'd like to see where you got this "fastest Honda" info from. NSX anyone?
- 9 sec. 1/4 mi. is pretty dang impressive.
- "Domestics" are now made in Canada, Japan, Indonesia, even China.
- Toyota/Honda motors are more reliable, statistically proven. If I could find the stats, I'd link 'em.

And this is coming from ME...

You are both falling for the stereotype. I think Asia, Europe, and American car companies are building some really good engines today.   Twenty years ago, a 4 cyl. engine in a Corolla would last a million miles, but generated like eighty horsepower. A small block V-8 in a GM truck would produce enough power to drag small houses around, but the camshafts went junk in 60,000 miles.

Today, nearly any car you buy will be built stronger, out of better materials and designs than ever before.

Posted By: DeTrevni
Date Posted: 07 January 2007 at 3:26pm

Well, theoretically that's because we're building each others' vehicles. Toyotas are now being built in the U.S. & Canada, and Chevies are being built in Japan and other countries.

Also, in 30 years, do you think the cars you currently own will even be around? I don't think there will ever be another classic. Nothing worth keeping in 30 years.

I gotta love almost anything built up to 1974.

Slap me, because I have a feeling you just made most of that up.

I'm just going to forget you said 50,000 miles.

First, I never said Chevrolet engines were bad. We have a 2000 Suburban(125k) and a 1995 Silverado(250k). Other than slight transmission problems they have been fine.

Second, when was how good an engine is based on power? I don't give a crap if the engine has 500hp, if it's sitting in the shop it is no use to me. Oh yeah, prove to me that  Honda, Toyota, and Subaru engines break down more than your precious domestics.

Third, quit reading Muscle Car Weekly or whatever the hell you read to feed you this crap.

I don't think it's so much because we're building each other's cars as much as the bar continues to rise year after year. America's car builders are beginning to learn that mediocre build quality is not good enough, the future of these car companies is at stake. Everybody has to build better to remain competetive. That's why Buick was awarded the highest quality recently by a leading firm (J.D. Powers? I'm not 100% which one...googling to find out).

Posted By: DeTrevni
Date Posted: 07 January 2007 at 4:14pm

I'm not bashing new cars, don't get me wrong. Just pointing out personal observations. Features and quality are technically going up, but I think the longevity of the vehicle is going down. Not motorwise, but over-all quality. Companies are really cutting corners with the new cars, trying to make them as affordable as possible. VW's are breaking all over the place. My German teacher's Jetta has a broken trunk latch (can't get into the trunk), the plastic door panels are snapping, the cup holders snapped off, and all kinds of stuff like that.

Technically, Buick is a luxury devision, and is expected to have higher quality products. Other companies that produce eco-cars, while being still perfectly decent, just won't be lasting as long as the older models. Of course, the bar is rising, and quality is getting better.

corvette? camaro? cobalt? etc...
- I'd like to see where you got this "fastest Honda" info from. NSX anyone?

A book dedicated all about honda engines, ill find the title of it later.
- 9 sec. 1/4 mi. is pretty dang impressive.

Not for a drag car... that consist of just the chasis and engine, I could get a camaro to run 9's with about 700Hp... in the drag racing world, that sucks. There are cars out there that can run mid 5's not including top fuel dragsters and funny cars.
- "Domestics" are now made in Canada, Japan, Indonesia, even China.

Domestic car plants (in america) provide a lot more jobs for americans than you'd think, who cares about china's job suply... just tell em to eat their neighbor or somthen...
- Toyota/Honda motors are more reliable, statistically proven. If I could find the stats, I'd link 'em.

No actually... but, they do get better milage, I'll give ya that. lets put it this way, a honda commercial brags about its "powerfull" new 175HP engine... Chevy has an engine called the LS7, that stock makes 500HP, and with a new cam and a set of headers, makes 600HP

And this is coming from ME...
