Subject: Marine Scout/Sniper
Date Posted: 08 January 2007 at 10:56pm

Okay, I've wanted to be a marine sniper since I was about... 9, and I've learned as much as I can find on the subject of snipers, hell I can tell you the range and MOA for the windage with a mil dot scope and the dimensions of the target in hieght and width, I've even gone as far as to have built my own ghillie suit by hand just for the exsperiance of it. But I want to know more, I've read the books, Shooter, Sniper, and Silent Warrior (and planning on getting Marine Sniper pretty soon.) Do any of you know of any good web sites or books I can check out? and do you know where I can find a copy of the U.S. Marine Corpse Scout/Sniper training manual? I'm trying to learn as much as I can on the subject in an attempt to make Sniper school as pain free as possible if I ever make it...

well I'm looken for both manual type stuff, and biography type things, I've relized I learn almost as much from those as I do the manual type books. You get differant lessons from each one.

It is a lot of work, it took me forever, and it was really hard to keep my self motivated (i have a.d.d.) but better to do it now and know a little bit of what I'm doing then show up in Sniper school with a  look on my face, I learned a lot from that project that'll come in handy

If you want to make STA School you better put as much time Running & walking long distances with a lot of weight as you do reading and doing Grunt Arts & Crafts. Thou just a bit of advise from a Marine.

Make sure your a good Marine before you start to think all High Speed Scuba Snipa. After all Scout Snipers are picked from within your Battalion. So unless you make the Indoc (test) all the books and time making guillie suits wont amount to much.

I tell the same to all the guys who sign up with dreams of Special Forces and Rainbow Six games. Make sure your the best basic Marine Rifleman you can be before you go all crazy for STA.

Ya, I've spent a lot more time working out then I used too, and I've gotten a lot stronger. Still worken on that running thing... winter and I dont get along well since I'm too stupid to wear anything but short sleaves.

And dont get me wrong, I'm not one of those kids who played ghost recon or rainbow 6 and went "AWSOME! IMA DO THAT!" I know that the differance between video game snipers and real snipers is VERY differant. I've just always been fasinated with them and one day figured "hey, why not"

P.S. got any tips to help me starting a running/jogging routine?

Have you ever tried the game sniper elite, its really fun because you have to factor in wind and bullet drop when you take your shot. Also it doesn't have very good graphics but its really fun.

nope, and to your comment up there... I dont have any ADD meds, my mom wont give em too me cuz she says "if your any more laid back you'll be dead" so... none for me, so i just stair off into space and shoot at squirells and make little pyramid figures out of the holes in the ceiling at school (no really... i missed the first 20 minutes of my Science final last year because I was doing that...)

dont tell the corps you have add you'll get rejected faster than you could swear.

as for a runing routine. just run. at least 20 miles a week. at the lest. STA guys always run, always hump with a lot of weight. they focus more on a high level of stamina from what ive seen. make sure you can do at least the 20 pull ups. but you'll want to be able to do a hell of a lot more. to past indoc i think you need to swim like 500m, then run a fist class PFT. and in first class you better get above 290 or you wont pass indoc. add wont help you in the sniper world, those guys can wait days before taking a shot.

you also need to shoot expert at bootcamp on the rifle range. i am pretty sure you need a level 1 swim qual too.

good luck!

sneaky, i'm not sure what you have but it doesn't sound like add to me.. ADD isn't the way you are describing it, the way people that don't have it think it is. And wth do you mean your mom doesn't want to chill you out anymore? ADD meds are amphetemines, how the hell does that chill you out any more than you already are?

Yeah......medicines like adderall don't make you more "laid back", they raise your awareness (only of things that annoy you) and make it much easier for you to concentrate.

Your mom is thinking of ADHD medicine.

Don't concern yourself with being a good shot now. Unless you can get a qualified instructor to teach you, you're probably just going to create bad habits that will be hard to break later on. Your PMI will teach you how to shoot properly.

EE has it right when he says you need endurance. Get a good backpack with a frame, start hiking. How old are you and how long do you have until you plan to enlist? When you get to the point of talking to recruiters, don't let them push you until you're more than physically ready to go. Expect to lose 15-20lbs in training, no matter if it's fat or muscle. Try to have that much of a cushion over your minimum weight.

Most things you need to know, they will train you on. Get in shape, and take it one step at a time. You need to get past bootcamp first.

Yea. Adderall doesn't jack you up at all, I was on it for like 6-months(I think its the only reason why I passed High School). The only reason I went off of it, was my Dad was afraid I would have no voice for myself... Me personally I want to get back on it, but... with me having no insurance for that till March, I'm kinda stuck...  I'm not saying I have a chronic case of it, but most Days I'll be doing something(playing my Bass or whatever) and I'll just completely blank out, and have a stupid look on my face for minutes on end then I'll get up and almost forget what I was doing..   ADHD on the other hand is the whole "The American people will ... ...  look at the kitty"  Me personally ADHD is kind of lame case of "stupidity" a lot of people who "claim" to have it just think out loud WAYYY to much, it's easy to not listen to those little voices in your head... it's just sad to see some doctors just hand out Adderall like it was a friggin bag of M&M's when actually all you have to do to some of these kids is have them join an Activity(football, karate, etc...).

It doesnt matter if you have any type of medical condition if you are really convinced about what are you planning to do.

Being a USMC is such a great challenge and lot of work so, keep it up and good luck with your plans my friend.

No I'm not saying that... I'll be right in the middle of something and completely blank out. Not just be sitting listening to the same babble and be like "oh man 'this is' getting boring, I'm ganna doodle."  I'll be in the middle of playing something on my Bass or Watch TV and my mind will go completely blank. Nothing 'leads' up to it, all of a sudden it'll just happen.

Marines are serious on some pull ups man.  When I was talking to the recruiter, the very first thing he asked me to do was pullups when I walked in the office.

well I'm currently 15, like I said I've wanted to join the marines since I was 9 so I'm doubten its just some dumb little phase, and plan on recruiting 2 monts after I graduate. The marine corpse is the main reason I've started getting in better shape... among a couple other reasons because I figured, easier to start now and keep myself fit, then going "OH CRAP! I GOTTA GET READY FOR BOOT CAMP IN 3 WEEKS!"

To panda man, the exact same thing happens to me, I'll just be sitting there doin somthen, and next thing I know its 10 minutes later and I dont remember what happened from then to now... and I know I wasnt asleep, but its kinda the same thing.

To redneck, too late... I hunt with my grandpa and uncle a lot, so I have a decent amount of exsperiance shooting rifles, and I'm a pretty good shot for being untrained, in my opinion anyways. And I'm technically underweight, I'm 5'8" 115(ish) pounds, and I've tried gaining some weight in the past, it just doesnt work. My matabolism just doesnt co-operate, so that part is gunna suck.

That's not true at all.  You just have to learn how to eat.  My senior year I was 6'2" about 165 on a good day.  A year and a half later, I'm around 199.  I've been up to 205, but I cut a little because I'm about to go into boot camp myself.

It's really easy if you join the right websites and readup.

Jesus Harold Christ, get that out of your system now. Don't be the retard who pronounces it like that at bootcamp, or you will be a corpse.

I was in the skinny SOB club myself before I left. 5'11" 140lbs. I managed to gain 10lbs before I left, which I didn't think was possible for me. Bust your ass woking out and eat a ton of protein now. Eggs, Fish, Peanut Butter are good, maybe even get some whey protein milkshake mix. Endurance is highly important, but if you're a twig with good endurance, that endurance is going to go right down the crapper when you start losing weight.

I got knocked out of it with mono before I left and wasn't able to excercise until three weeks before I left and I paid dearly for it. Be able to soundly trounce the requirments for anything physical before you go, even if it means missing the two months after graduation goal you have set for yourself. If it comes down to it, take a year at community college first. That will start you off as a contract PFC, and usually give you an edge up in maturity over other recruits. If you want the best training possible go in the winter. Platoons are smaller so you will get more "individual attention" from the Drill Instructors and wont miss as much training due to bad weather.

That's good, but instead of protein, get a gainer.  I like Isopure Mass or Universal Real Gains.  Drink with whole milk right after you work out.

Then before you go to bed, drink some Casein Protein.  Casein takes much longer to digest than whey, which is perfect before you go to bed.  15 is a good age to start creatine too, if your cool with that.  I started at 16.  Just realize creatine doesn't build mass as much as it does expand muscle that you already have.

And get a good multivitamin.  Then just make sure you eat at least three meals a day (I eat four).  Meals don't have to be a feast, for me a shake and an peanut butter sandwhich is my mid-day meal in between lunch and supper.

If you do what I told you, I can't see you gaining any less than 10-15 lbs your first month.

Hells ya I am man, I'll see what I can scrounge up for ya when I make it there.

I cant ever imagine myself as a 9-5 job, doing the same exact thing day in and day out absolutly hating my job and having to sit at a desk all day. I cant think of anything I'd rather do more then the marines, my back up plan if I dont make it in the marines or if I get discharged, is a mechanic... but thats just da back up plan.

Don't forget, if you can't clear an entire office building full of enemies with a bolt-action rifle, or cannot kill a person by shooting him in the foot, you are a terrible sniper, and will fail at everything. Don't forget to trash talk in 1337 after your kills.

Ok then I can call you Honestly WRONG. There is no such thing as steroetypical marines. Maybee in the Recruiting Comercials but not in the FMF. In my unit we had Fat Marines, we had Nerd Marines, we Had Marines who where wicked bleeding heart libs as we had Marines who where right wing nuts who horaded ammo and waited for america to be invaded (btw Cpl Henry still waiting for commie paratroops). Marines are from all walks of life and from all kinds of backgrounds the only thing we all have in common is that we earned the title. If anyone has told you otherwise then you been lied to.

Heck even now when I watch war footage I am reminded of how young most Marines are and how young I was when I was deployed overseas durring diferent Operations. And unlike you I have been there and done that and have the memories and friendships to give support to my claim.

I'll give you that, I havn't been over seas.  But I've been around the military for most of my life (my dad was 9 years Air Force), and I leave for Army the 29th, so I'm sure I will.

Have I dealt with the BS marine recruiters?  Yes, because I considered becomming a marine for a while.  But the second you tell them you choose Army, your dishonoring your country and trading in your pride and honor for a little bit of comfort.  And before you say anything about it, those were his exact words.  I know nerds that went into marines and are still in there, but screaming liberals?  Come on, that has to be less than 2% of your marines.  If it's even that high.

I'm honestly not even interested in what numbers your going to come back with, because to be a marine is almost everything a liberal is against, and If they join the marines, they can't have been that much liberal in the first place.

Now if you want to come back with the whole "I've been there and you havn't" point, you can all day and theres nothing I can say except your correct.  I realize there are a different types of backgrounds in any branch, but if you can honestly say you think stereotypical marine or marine sniper, and you think TKD, then I think your marine opinion is a little outdated.

Sneaky - If you want, I saw this documentary on 60 the military channel I think, about a marine sniper.  He holds the record for longest confirmed kill in the war on terror.  If you search for that, you should find his name and then his documentary.  It was an hour long (with commercials).  Pretty cool too.  He recieved a Purple Heart as well.

You mean the marines?  Which are considered the "first to fight" branch of the military?

Generally all liberals disagree with the war and the fighting taking place now.  Sweet God in heaven don't try and twist that around to make me say that the liberals don't support the troops.  So why would a liberal join a cause they don't support and join the branch that will put them on the forefront (military sniper) of the battle?

I'm gona agree with Elvis on what he said. lots of different people in the Marines. Recruiters are nuts to put it simple. They use a lot of reverse psychology. If they think telling you you arent good enough for the Marines will get you to leave only to come back again at a later date they will do that. Ive seen it happen many times, hell when I work with recruiters from time to time, Ive tried it and it worked. I dont bash the other branches, I just speak more highly of the Marines. There is no reason to bash any branch of service, they are all important, we as Marines I guess you could say have a certain whats the word stigma? We appeal more to certain people I guess.I have seen a few panzy Marines though thats for sure. Definatly some fat ones and nerdy ones, but same with the other branches. As for you being dishonorable and joining the Army, he shouldnt have said that, it wasnt right, he could have said what you dont have what it takes to be a Marine?
But I heard the same from the Army when they tried to recruit me, hell they still call me and I tell them I'm in the Marines, they dont bash the Marines now, but before I joined they most certainly did.

It wasn't the main recruiter I was talking too.  It was his sargeant above him, who was the recruiter before the one that I actually talked too.

here's to you...that's not true... you can join the marines and not get shipped out to the sandbox.  A friend of mine did it.  I don't exactly know what he did, but he scored high enough on the tests so that he sits on the east coast all day.

See, us liberals may not support the war, but everyone in the military doesn't have to go to the mideast and fight the war.  We're just smart enough to pick the jobs that don't involve getting shot at

I really don't know where you got that from me, unless you were going off the "first to fight" comment.  I know in any branch, they're not going to train you for a skilled job then ship you over.  I'm just saying the general mentality of the marines is the most "hardcore" branch.  Hence the longer boot camp and such...

I not disagreeing with you at all, but I would bet that the actual number of liberals that do join the marines is very small.  Besides, my argument was more based towards the marine sniper, not something like a computer technician.
