I dunno... Not sure where this fits in.
Unnecessarily overpowered for a personal phone, and doesn't have a keyboard (or run Windows) for business use. How does it do synching with Outlook?
I guess it depends on the price. If you can essentially get a phone thrown in with your iPod, then I guess it will do fine, but if it costs much more than an iPod...
I also note how it is referred to as an "iPhone" - doesn't Cisco already have dibs on that name?

I am a big Windows Mobile fan. I have looked at the Treo - definitely last year's news. If you are looking for a new/cool WM device, the Cingular 8525 is the newest/hottest thing, as well as the Blackjack and Q, depending on your preferred keyboard layout.
But otherwise I agree - this iPhone is nifty due to the large storage amount and overall sexiness, but otherwise strictly "meh". Without a keyboard, it will never go beyond personal users. Seems like it will mostly compete with iPods.

Opps, I forgot, the treo doesn't have that little gadget that shuts off near your face.
These things have been around for a while, every now and then someone adds a few new things. When you really look at it, theres not much new.
Nifty? - yes
Innovation explosion? - no

Yeah, my Treo 700wx is a 4gb mp3 player already. Has MS Office and pretty much any other functionality I want can be added through the vast library of Windows Mobile 5 software out there. Neat, but I don't see me buying one. That, and I don't like Cingular.

I just noticed some shady billing practices. They couldn't explain a bunch of charges on my Grandma's bill, not even to me, and that scares me. They also have 40 dollar data plans and spotty coverage, from my observations. I live in Central Ohio, so that last thing can probably be overlooked, but yeah. I just....don't like them....
Their phone whoring annoys me too....
I don't know if I would skip them over my opinion if I were you, but I know I'll never deal with them again.

Ok... Yeah, the coverage I'll find out about soon enough, and if it doesn't work I'll switch back or something.
Right now I have a phone with TMobile - great data support, international functionality, cool phones, but crappy coverage, and a phone with Verizon - super coverage, but crappy phones, crappy data support, and super-crappy international coverage.
My understanding of Cingular is that it has the international support and data support (although they charge more for data than TMobile), and have much better coverage than TMobile). They also have the 8525, which is the phone I want.
We shall see - thanks for the info.

That is the slickest product I've seen in... ever.

Nope.
On-screen soft keyboard =/= real keyboard. Not even close.
This keyboard is sufficient for IM purposes, but doesn't even come close to meeting the needs of business users. And that's a killer. I may be proven wrong, but I don't see this thing making even a tiny dent in the business market.
This iPhone is sexy, no doubt, but I still can't figure out who will buy them, except people who are already in the iPod market.

I really dont see your point, that isnt the aim of the iPhone at all. Thats like saying "shucks, the new honda civic isnt going to dent the luxery car market"
Sure, it may be a solid product, and no, it wont affect that aspect of the world market, but no, thats not at all what the civic (or iphone) is aiming for.
They arent after the business market, they're aiming at the personal user, the iPod lover. Apple isnt going to sacrifice thier vision of a project to try to satisfy a market they arent after. They're targetting one group, which happens to be huge, and seem to have nailed it dead on, pleasing them immensely, as opposed to a "business" model that pleases more people, but only slightly.

I expect you are right.
But my concern there is that all those people already own iPods. So now they are competing agains their own products instead of gaining new market share.

since when has that mattered when it came to the iPod. Average iPod user works like this: own an iPod, new one comes out, instantly want new one, screw the old one.
I'm guilty of that mentality, I know most people are. I know that yes, they can be competing with themself, I just dont see it as much of a problem for them.

A bit over a month ago with my friend fetus I was discussing how I wanted a device that
1: Operated as a phone
2: Had a decent built in camera (decent enough for me to photoshop with)
3: Had PIM like functions for me to use as a planner
4: Played MP3s
5: did all of them well and easily
so needless to say this is quite of a shock to me. It looks amazing. Too bad it's cingular (soon to be AT&T). In they do not officially cover my area yet for some reason which is weird because it's not a small city at all and if you use to many minutes in my area they will revoke your contract, something that has already happend to three of my friends.
Something to be somewhat worried about if you do a lot of traveling rambs.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

I want a phone that makes phone calls and the occasional text message, don't care about the other stuff. I would never use any of the other stuff. I have an ipod that I use in the gym and on air planes, but have no interest in having it integrated into my phone. But it is still pretty cool and I am impressed, I just won't be buying.

No. I use mine to store project files, transfer large amounts of media, and put movies on there so I can use the A/V cord to watch them on the TV. I only use it for listening to music about 70% of the time.

They arent included anymore. When the iPod first became photo capable, they included cables to use it on your tv.

Doesn't interest me. What happens if you get a call in the middle of a song/movie or in the middle of taking a video. It seems unlikely but it happens to me all the time.
And for the price, it isn't worth it. I can watch movies on my PSP, play music on my mp3, and answer calls with my phone. None of which are esseintal to my existence, except for maybe my cell because lives now run around those things.

If you get a call when you are listening to music or watching a movie, you have the option to pause it and go to the call. When you end the call, it picks up right after you left off.
And by saying it is not worth it for the price, are you calling it too expensive or are you saying that you personally do not need it?
A 4gb iPod costs $200 and a smartphone with a two year contract will cost around $300. I wouldn't say that the price is outragous.

Song gently fades out, you take the call, when you hang out, it fades back on.

Yeah I have the Razr V3i with iTunes and listening to songs and taking calls is seamless. I assume the iPhone will work the same or probably better.

Deff better, iTunes with motorola was a failed experiment, then apple was like "screw this, we'll do it ourselves"

Ok you can do all that on those different devices but think about it add all those into a device smaller than the psp. Now add a full blown web browser a keyboard and computer grade programs.

Yeah, sounds easy, but it would kind of annoy me. But thats me.
Its still sound to expensive for what it is though. Convienent, yes, but I still don't see a reason to pay $500 for what I already have if its just saving space in my pocket.
