That requires an explanation.

And this rifle is not nearly as big a deal as it's being made. Personally, I would like http://www.military.com/soldiertech/0,14632,Soldiertech_XM109,,00.html - this .

I don't understand what everyone's obsession is with snipers and their toys. It's not honorable and most of them have a hard time living with themselves after killing only 1 guy.

Jerks, the lot of them.

The AR 50 has been around for about 15 years.

The only difference in it and the AS 50 is that the AS-50 is that it is semi auto.

It is NOT new. Ask any TRAINED sniper if semi auto is important to them.

It really isn't. One Shot One Kill is the motto, and for a reason.

You shoot more than once and you are no longer a sniper....you are a TARGET.

If I may, I'd like to point out that .50 is used for destruction of gear more often than people. The usefulness of semi-automatic in that situation can in fact be pretty great.

Also, not a whole lot of infantry weapons carry the range of a .50, so rate of fire does matter, as it allows your more rounds in the time it takes the enemy to close.

That said, I'm not in the military, I don't claim omnipotent knowledge of the situation.

Granted.

Then why would you not use an M-2?
Cyclic rate of about 450-600 rounds per minute.
Sure could tear some equipment up with that.
Very few sniper teams are deployed with .50s with the sole purpose of destroying equipment.
Although I ETS'd in 1990, pretty sure things haven't changed all that much....but maybe they have.

Oh, I totally agree. The M2 is one of the best weapons ever invented, and the original use of .50 snipers (in Vietnam) was just M2s with scopes on them.

I don't think .50 sniper rifles are used all that much though, to tell you the truth. Far less than smaller stuff, mostly 7.62x51, like the SPR, M14 and S24 variants. At $4 a round, .50 is expensive to be using for almost anything too.

In war, I dont think any will care how much a bullet costs if it keeps us alive. At least I hope someone in congress wouldnt deny funding for bullets because of its cost when our lives are on the line.

As for Ken Majors statement about snipers not caring about semi, the purpose of it being semi in my opinion is the ability to quickly target multiple targets as fast as possible. while still maintaining one shot one kill. it would speed the process up a little, and hopefully that little is enough to take more of them out. I'm not a sniper by any means, just a rifleman, but thats my opinion on it. If I was a sniper, I wouldnt mind being able to shoot five people in the time it would take to shoot two or three with a bolt action.

Well....being a Marine (and I highly respect you for that) you must realize that engaging a target beyond the range of return fire (i.e. sniper) requires that you are an expert marksman.
Fully understanding the above, than you also must realize that you are shooting out there about 500 yards/meters. I qualified expert in the Army.
I know that the Army standards are no where near what the Marine Corps requires but I am pretty sure that being able to successfully engage and HIT more than 2 targets beyond 500 meters once the shooting starts....well that is a tall order.
Perhaps we need to re-read our FMs, and maybe a few less war stories.

Your welcome Thor.

I should receive my SF-50 this coming week as well.
With that in hand I should only have about 34 months to go. I will have to submit my DD-214 in order to get the OP&F to send me the eligibility statement and then the cost summary but once that is done. I should be good. My Oh457 should cover it.
I'm stoked.

I aint saying I am a better shooter than you. I know I would have a hell of a time hitting a moving target at 500 meters with a M16. I would consider it a lucky shot. The snipers though, I dono, maybe it is war stories, but I know they are amazing shots and I wouldnt doubt their ability to shoot a moving target at over 500 meters. Probably not a 1000 meters, but over 500 wouldnt suprise me.

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it maybe?

.50 sniper rifles are a bit more portable than an M2 and apparently are deployed often for the express purpose of stopping car and truck bombs. Having a semi might be useful in that situation.

The Army is planning on replacing most of its M24 sniper rifles with SR-25 varients, which dont yield much to bolt actions in the way of accuracy.

Sniping in an urban enviroment often becomes more of a designated marksman's role anyways. Having a weapon that can do both things and doesn't comprimise on accuracy would seem to make sense.

Earlier on in this war there were several incidents of snipers being overrun and killed. The reaction to this was to do away with the two-man system and have larger teams supporting them, which makes it quite a bit more difficult to remain undetected. Adopting semi-auto sniper rifles may be another reaction to this.

If snipers are asking for a semi-auto rifle, I'd give them what they want. There's probably not a lot of of traditional ghillie suit and crawling for days across fields type of stuff going on here. It's more urban Stalingrad-style combat, and if I'm mistaken the Soviets started issuing SVT-40 sniper rifles because of that type of fighting.

Fantastic dude. You give em hell when ya get there!

Have you guys ever talked to any snipers? They stay locked down in one grid square and only shoot and immobile targets. They won't shoot at a moving jeep or running man no matter how close they are, it's stupid.

The reason they could conceivably need a magazine fed weapon is that they sometimes miss*GASP*, and need a second opportunity to adjust right away.

Another one is the pesky fact that mortar teams and Haji IED teams consist of, get this,MORE THAN 1 PERSON. They don't have time to stalk a whole IED team and only kill one, you want to take them all out without having to reposition and restalk every time you shoot.

It's all about the laziness.

I've got pics of it, but I'll have to post them later, this PC doesn't allow access to photobucket. Damn work PC's!
