i have a linksys router and it is a piece of crap. it slows down and almost stops my internet flow or connection(whatever you want to call it) half the time when im trying to do something on a page i have to refresh it like 3 times. before the stupid page loads, and it started doing this after i got the god damn thing, its such a pain in the ass, i think i mgiht package it up nice and tightly and then find the idiot who made it and throw it at his head.

anyone use linksys and like or dislike them?

PS-i phoned there customer support and in roughly 45minutes on the phone with a service rep, i got nowhere. no one at the linksys help center speaks english whatsoever, none of them qualified enough to be allowed to even use a phone in a country thats primarily english speaking.

Works fine for me. But streaming video's is far faster on my other comp thats plugged in the modem.

Edit: Which one do you have?

It seems just like any other wireless router I've ever connected too.  If you want such an amazing connection, you have to sacrifice mobility and plug in.

hey, squishey, you wireless? if so, do you have WEP encryption running? if not, someone's probably piggy-backing your connection.

WEP = Crap. WPA is much more secure. You can find a wep key in under a minute.

Also bit torrent kills routers. Try making yourself a DMZ on the router. You lose the firewall protection but you get sped up.

I spent all this money on a lynksys router, cat5 cable about 4 years ago, used it for a few weeks, then had internet connection issues. Tried again just recently to hook it back up and the same deal.

Waste of money for me since I dont have the computer smarts to keep it working correctly.

It's amazing what all you can learn from just reading the stuff in there.

I've had a Linksys wireless router for several years, no problems here.

My Wii, my G/F's computer, her brothers computer, and her Dads computer all use, Linksys... We've never had even a hick-up up for Bad connections.... you must of errored on something, the only problems we somewhat have is that sometimes Cookies will slow it down from time to time... but with two clicks it's all better...   I don't know why, but if your running to many Anti-Virus Scans, that may slow it down(AKA: Norton).

Edit:  WHAT?! you can't say ...no. you can't

The only problem I've had with mine is the fact that I have to reset it about once every two or three days....The wireless card I got with the router for my laptop completely boggles my mind though....I reformatted the thing a while back and when I reinstalled the card it started just disconnecting and reconnecting constantly. I tried everything I can think of and I still can't figure that one out....It may be the laptop though cause it's doing some other weird crap too, like not letting me activate windows....So I don't know....Quite frustrating though...

The only problem I've run into with Linksys routers occurs when we have a lot of people on the wireless and hardwired at the same time. You could download a freeware MAC Scanner and see if anyone else is leeching off your wireless.

edit- You could also try updating your firmware.

I put one in at my dad's house to run my stepbrothers and my dad's work computer off of. So far I have not got a call to come fix it yet.

Did you even try reading the help files that came with your router?

Jesus H. Sometimes you need to search for an answer rather than just asking people.

I have the problem of having to reload a page every now and then, but it really isn't that big of a deal.  Also, my stepdad will complain about the main computer's speed every few weeks, but not often enough to demand that I fix it.

I have had nothing but the best from my linksys router, but having my wireless really kills the router speed.  WPA encryption with my own password and whatnot on the wireless.  It helps to not run a ton of internet leeching programs, and to have a decent computer / browser.

Linksys isn't too bad for me, sometimes it doesn't work and wants to disconect but it normally works and when it's working its always pretty fast.

I've had good luck with Linksys.  More than I can say for any other router I have tried.

Linksys, oh my god, how I hate thee.

Heres a story. I made my first foray into networking around 1994 with 10baseT cards, both were linksys. Neither one would actually work.

Ive had probably about 5 linksys NIC's over the years, and over time every single one has died, most within a few months of owning them.

In fact, I at one point returned 5 dead-on-arrival linksys routers to the local Best Buy, ONE AFTER ANOTHER. Finally I told them to just give me the cash or credit and got a D-link, which has been running nonstop for well over 4 years at this point.

The only linksys product I have EVER owned that actually functioned correctly was a 802.11g laptop card. Amazingly it never threw a hitch.

I really don't like Linksys.  Any semi-high traffic will lead to my router dying on me, no explanation.  I heard it is the firmware, and there is only one type out there that doesn't randomly crash.

I had a Linksys BEFSR41 wired router a long ways back. It worked fine, both when I used it as a router and wen I used it as a switch. My current wireless setup is all D-link, and it works great. Setting up the bridge for Xbox Live was maddening, though.

Check out buffalo if you are going wireless. The whr-hp-g54 is around 60usd and there is a cheaper one around 40. Linksys routers are actually getting worse with time, which sort of defies natural electronic trends. The newer wrt54g's have officially reached the point of "crippled". Google wrt54g version. The wrt54gl is the only linksys i would recommend to anyone, because it is actually the original wrt54g before they got cripples for profit. Dlink is not much better than the crippled wrt54g imo.
If you are somewhat educated about networking/computers you can put dd-wrt firmware on a wrt54gl or buffalo and set it up to handle nearly anything you throw at it (bittorrent, qos, voip, etc). Free firmware will turn your 40-60usd router into a 500usd gateway.
I know buffalo might not sound like a big name, but the cheap g54s ($40) consumer routers with third party firmware are a standard for large wireless nets.

Wow, Enos, that is surprising. I've used a variety of Linksys products over the years, including the Linksys router on my desk right now, and have never had bad luck with them.

Sorry for the bump, but my 3rd Linksys in a row just died.

Mbro, how does torrent kill your router, cause I torrented 5 cd's last night, I wake to all of them completed, router = dead.

I've gone through so many crappy wireless routers. I got so fed up that I stopped trying and just hook it up directly. Lynksys is easily the best one I've owned.

I have a linksys router.  I agree, it sucks.  When I first bought it, it worked fine, but now it sucks.  I always have to reset it and turn off the power and stuff.  I'll probably buy a better one when I have the money.
