Original Matrix'd E98. Bought this from PCF awhile back. You all know the story behind it.

Starting to repair the grip frames. Tried using alumaloy but it kept spallin off. Plus, the torch was melting the grip panels.

Switched to JB Weld. Added some metal as filler to help strengthen it. It's looking good so far. One joint is set and I am filling in where other larger pieces have been cut out.

Pics.

First patch. Just trying to make it into one piece again.

Area where I replaced metal.

Sheet metal filler.

Epoxy setting.

You all may frown on using JB weld for something like this, but it's really the only thing that is going to work. Once it sets it will be plenty hard and should work just as well as anything.

Cool, but is all the paint flaking off like that?

Posted By: karll
Date Posted: 03 February 2007 at 3:40pm
No. I sanded that off to start with. When using a torch to melt the alumaloy it scorches the paint. I just took it off beforehand so I wouldn't have to deal with it. The whole grip frame will be stripped and repainted. Everything else stays the same.

good luck with that.  It always bothered me that it was so beat.

Is there really a whole lot of custom milling and stuff done to the original halves? If not, or if you could also do that, I don't see why you might as well go and buy two new halves and put all the internals in them. But that could "ruin" the original matrix'd E98 so I can see why you wouldn't want to.

All of the sigs are on the sides and top of the body. There are safe and unsanded, although some of them are starting to fade. There is a lot of millwork done to the inside of the grip frames. Even if there wasn't, I still wouldn't want to swap out internals. Rebuilding it because of what it is.

Karl, let me know how it goes. I've got a guy here that wants to throw a matrix board in an e-bolt that he's got coming. I'll need you and bruce to lend me your expertise!

Is he looking to use a Gen E matrix board or something like a DM4/5/C?

I was talking with the original maker and he said he might have the original machine paths he used to mill the marker. Should I see if I can get them?

If I were you, I would probably keep the reciever halves as is, and make an exact copy using the internals but with new recievers.

I have thought that over many times. I came to the conclusion that I would rather repair the grip frames, put in a new board and noid, and leave everything else as is.

JB weld is about the only thing you can use. It kinda sucks, I know.

But if you use it right, you can sand it real nice. Noone will even know after a good paintjob.

I am on the filing part right now. It sucks. I wish I had a DA sander. That would make this project a lot faster. I am probably going to add a coat of JB weld to the entire outsid of the grip panel. That way I can achieve a uniform surface and add strength.

Little more work done. Nothing major. Slowly but surely.

Little sanding/filing/dremeling.

Messing with some paint that didn't stick well at all. Just trying to get a feel of what it will look like in the end.

What kind of grips you going to put back on it?

I was talking to a guy about buying some lcd sticky grips, but he never contacted me back. So right now, I don't know.

These are for the Matrix LCD, but I don't believe they will work will they...

Sure won't. Tippies use .45 grips.

However, if you get Stickies, they will have an unsightly "tail." You can leave it or cut it off as you please.

Edit: Wait, was it drilled for LCD grips?

Don't believe so. I don't think it would be to hard to do though. I remember there being grips in the video, but they looked all hacked up.

Doesnt look to bad at all. JB Weld did a decent job. Have you though about panel grips at all?

jb weld and fiberglass bondo kinda work but are brittle when really thin.

try useing "loctite"...the stuff is like metal when it dry's, put one pice of metal on one side and glue it on, metal has to be thin so it wont make it thick looking.

green loctite

Never heard of it. Anybody know about the number coding for loctite? Lower the number the stronger? Or higher the stronger? Green loctite is 290. Red 270 sounds like it might be stronger. I still don't know if this is even a viable option.

Plus, gorilla bonds wood well, but plastic and metal.... not so good. Karll, try this, get two thin-but-sturdy support struts. Green loc-tite the grip together and clamp the bastard and let it cure for 72 hours unmoved. (Green, btw, is permanent and gap-seeking, it's made to slide into things that are already put together) Then, once it is set, brace the frame from the INSIDE with those thin-yet-strong rods/struts using a bead of JB-weld down the length of them so that you have full-contact against the frame all the way down. They don't need to be super long, just long enough to lend support to the frame. Good luck! Oh, and did you try that solenoid hold-off thing yet for debounce?

What do you suggest for said supports?

Out of air, so debounce has to wait.

One of the very first, if not the first Matrix'd E98. Milled and assembled by TE back in the day. Has traded hands several times and gotten pretty beat up on the way. Now I am trying to restore and I'm failing miserably. It also has signatures from team members of Lockout, TE, and some other team that slips my mind at the moment.

Honestly, just some good old flat aircraft-grade aluminum strips. Either that or some stainless steel strips or rods. I'll see if I can't punch something up for you.

Double post because I am lazy.

All I have is sheet metal roof flashing. I will pay if you can come up with something better.

I didn't think of fiberglass, probably better than the aluminum strips due to the load-sharing qualities. Nice thinking!
