...I broke my left wrist.
I was snowboarding and I hit a jump that I have hit a dozen times, but this time something went wrong and I didn't land well. I went down hard on my left hand, because it happend so fast I didn't even have time to think to ball my fists, and well, now I'm typing whith one hand. Yes, this is my first year snowboarding if you had not already guessed it, but it will not be my last.

I broke my wrist last year at work. That is a miserable experience.
Are you right handed? I broke my right wrist, but am left handed, so it wasn't quite as bad...you can still write and whatever.

Had you had any formal lessons?
A friend of mine and I taught ourselves how to board, and while we didn't break anything, the first few runs were enough to convince me that death might not be such a bad thing. I saw sore for about a week and a half. We still go from time to time, but I just don't have the enthusiasm for it that some people do.

Sucks man. Snowboarding injuries aren't fun.
I went out after work the other day to board for a few hours... I only got 1 run in because I bombed the biggest jump in the park and came down wrong.
My knee came up and blasted me in the chin, causing a dislocated jaw, a nearly bit-in-half tongue, and the loss of my consciousness. Ski patrol said I probably lost around a pint of blood. My boss was cracking up.

heh.
When I used to work for lift operations at the local ski slope, I saw all kinds of ski-snowboard unjuries that made you wince to think about them. Skiier injuries were always worse for some reason, although a lot more fun to watch, because their skiis pop off, their poles go flying, and the helmets or hats get catapulted into the air.
When two skiiers get into a wreck, the resulting carnage will scatter all over the side of the hill.

I've been snowboarding for 8 years now, and luckily I haven't yet had any serious injuries. I've gotten knocked out once, and banged my head pretty hard on a few more occasions. I've sprained and jammed wrists before plenty of times, and I've been almost too sore to move the next day, but thankfully I've never broken anything.
That sucks though. I hope it heals fast for you.

Ya, snowboarding injuries seem to be very common, especially broken wrists, infact the doctor who patched me up broke his wrist in the same way doing the same thing.
Just to answer some questions; yes I am right handed, praise the Lord, so I can still write. Also, I did get formal lessons from a friend who has been boarding for many years, also, I have already had quite a bit of experience this season, but obviosly I still have a ways to go. *edit* Ya, I remember from being a skier, those wrecks were way cooler, I can remember a couple of times that I had my gear strewn all across the mountain. I never broke anything back then though.

Yard sales = awesome.
There's a run where I work called "The Wall." It's aptly named, since it's quite steep. Yesterday two skiiers collided at the top and slid down The Wall, losing their skis at the top. It was pretty funny watching them try to climb back up to get them until someone slid them down.

Even once you're amazing, injuries are still highly possible. There was a competition held two days ago at Pine Knob, and some guy in it almost killed himself when he overshot the landing by 30-ish feet and tried to do a front flip.

So true. You made me giggle, thanks.
Living here in FLA sucks for me during the winter time. I just cant get in my car any givin weekend, drive an hour or so and hit the slopes like I did in NY. I tried surfing when I moved here but its not the same. There's no Lodge with hot totties.

My worst injury was on my second time snowboarding. I though I was all good (I wasn't bad as I had skateboarded a lot before but went with a friend who had been boarding for a couple years plus she was a girl - I can't let girls be better than me) so I tried going off the jumps she did. They weren't that big but I feel going up the jump ya that's right laugh all you want. Anyway I was going up the jump and feel forward off the side of the jump and inured my lower abdomen (soft tissue) and groin area was also all blueish/purpleish.
I never broken any bones before though, I hope you heal up soon.

Doctor says it will be about six weeks before the cast can come off, and that is after I get the surgery, which might be a few days.
Anybody know anything to do for entertainment while I have the cast on? That is besides watching T.V. and coming on here.

I work lift ops and snowmaking at a ski area. Snowboarders break wrist/arms all the time. Skiiers seem to get hurt less often, but way worse when they do. Usually nice compound fractures or the femur, knees going the wrong way etc. Skiiers tend to be going faster, and their legs can go in odd directions.
The most tragic and not-funny injury this year was some cute 16 year old girl who fell snowboarding and came down to ski patrol saying she needed stitches in her lip because she bit it, not realizing she had bit her lip entirely off. That'll take some plastic surgery.

Surgery? Do they have to apply pins or screws, or what?

first thing i learned when snowboarding was to nvr try and break the fall off a jump by sticking your arms out, thats how it always happens
i almost broke my wrist the other week aswell, 270's to frontsides on a round down rail arent very fun when u mess up.

Rednekk, what ski area do you work at?
I worked lift ops for two winters, but you couldn't pay me enough to do snowmaking.
The guy I worked for was some piece of work, he'd show up to work all hung over all the time, when he did, you knew that if you screwed up you'd be walking down from the top of the mountain with a garbage bag picking up crap that people drop off the lifts.

The ski area I work at is sweet. Almost everyone there drinks/smokes weed, so you can basically get away with whatever you want there.
Any time I get to stand/sit around all day doing almost nothing I'm happy. Add in some money and free snowboarding, and I'm all over it.

I'm not sure what the surgery encompases yet, I'm going in in just a couple hours to have the "bone doctor" look at my wrist and to discuss the surgery. All I know as of right now is that if I don't have this surgery, my wrist won't heal right and I could develop some kind of pre-mature arthritis (sp.).

My relatives have had some nasty snow sport incidents. My cousin broke her wrist the same way you did, except much worse... to the point where she had to get screws put into it.
My aunt also twisted her knee really bad on skis and had to get her knee operated on... I'm glad I've never broken a bone(if you exclude my pinky toe).

I broke my wrist my sophmore year in high school. I'm right handed so classwork was fine. I had to sit out of actual drills in wrestling for over a month which sucked. Somehow I lost 7 pounds over that time though. It was lonely times back then however and I'm not right handed in everything so some things were a bit more difficult...

Well good news! I don't have to have surgery. The bone doctor said they say that to everyone so they will be prepared just in case they should need surgery. I'll have the cast off in a few weeks.
