If it tastes like crap, then you had a bad one.
Most red wines are very decent, especially if you are drinking them at their propper age.
I started drinking red wine back when i was 18 (legal in this country).
Especially if you are using it corectly, and not just drinking plonk to get hammered.
Living in South Africa has it's advantages.
Around here we get some pretty good Merlot. Also some very good Pinotage.
One thing beginers should always try are blends. They aren't always as heavy as the traight up wines. A good starting wine is a Merlot/ Cabernet savignon blend. Generally got for around 40 Cab 60% Merlot.
At a dinner party the other night 8 of us polished off 9 bottles of wine, and none of us woke with a headache.

Wine varies wildly it flavor. Good wine is very good - bad wine is vinegar.
But like KBK said - drink it slow, eat, and try an easy wine like a Merlot or a blend. If you drink it like its beer bad things WILL happen, and you are missing out in the process.
For later I recommend Shiraz or equivalent. Yummy.

The same with me. A wine tasting is a great place to get more involved with different types and styles of wine while around people that can answer questions and make recommendations.
I'm actually going to another one in a couple of weeks. I like cabernet savignon. Yellow Tail makes a nice, inexpensive, wine that goes well with my dinner from time to time.

I have really gotten hooked on connecting the taste of wine with chocolate.
There is a really snooty rich part of Orlando, called Winter Park, and in their fancy little downtown shopping square they have this one high-end chocolate store that every once in a while has a sampling day, where they match some of their newer chocolate creations with various wines and let the public sample them.
I try to make it to every one. They don't check ID, seeing as I am 18, that is a good thing, but the tastes of these dark red wines with good rich chocolate...amazing.

What, no action in the big city of Kenton? Hehe... My sales territory used to run through there, I think I've driven all the roads in Hardin County.
Say, Benji, does the Ada public pool still have the 9 meter olympic platform to dive off of? Not sure if you'd know or not, but I used to go with a friend of mine to Ada to visit his grandmother, and we LOVED diving off that platform... Only one at a public pool we ever found... I'm sure in the last 15 years it's been removed, what with the lawsuit potential there...

That being done.
I'm a huge fan or red wines, I find the depth of character and flavor to be superior to those of whites. I find that the fault of whites being rather less stimulating lies with the producers rather than the particular style of wine, however. American Chardonnays, for example, were these big, oaky, overpowering wines for years and years. Finally, once everyone finally figured out that your whites weren't supposed to taste like you were chewing on a slightly charred tree, the California chardonnay guys started to ease off the oak and turn to a more decidedly French style of production. Due to this, some of the market for whites has come back into favor. A lot of Cal-Italias (Italian varietals grown in California) specifically your various pinot grigios, are the new swill of the bored housewife. However, the market for whites right now is dominated by Riesling and Gewurztraminer, both fairly sweet and fruity German varietals. I wish that the American public would get into the white Bordeaux wines as well as some of the lesser known but excellent Alsatian whites.
That said, the reason I like reds is due to the delicate balance of fruit, earth, wood, and cream/vanilla that you pick up in both the nose and on the palate. I'm not a big fan of Syrah (it's not SHIRAZ no matter **edited** an advertising company tries to tell you) unless it is blended in with something like a Zinfandel or Cabernet (Savignon or Franc, doesn't matter) Petit Syrah, on the other hand, I absolutely love. It'll kick you in the teeth harder than you can imagine, but when you're in the mood for something that can stand up to a 32oz Porterhouse well, there's not much else that will do it. For the "light-bodied" red, I prefer a Pinot Noir. I'm not a fan of Merlot (and no, not because of Sideways, I haven't liked it since I was younger) the body is just too light for me and the acidity too much for a red IMHO. Pinot offers a much rounder body, better malolactic fermentation, and a more robust flavor than Merlot. For the medium body wines, I suggest picking up a nice Cabernet Franc if you can find one (they tend to be on the rare side) or a Cabernet Savignon from Chile, specifically Montes Reserva or Montes Alpha. Malbec is another nice light-to-mid bodied red that you don't find outside of the South American Wineries that much. For full body. Zinfandel Zinfandel Zinfandel!!!!!! Specifically Hendry or Ridge, I also like Terra Bianca's "Campaccio" from Italy, and I go through a bottle of Chateau Neuf de Pape about once per week.

I am completely devoid of any liking for wine .
The sulphates that are put in wine make it as if you were picking your teeth with the wrong end of an unlit matchstick (Sodium Metabisulphate to be specific) . I was fortunate enough to taste unadulterated wine as I was growing up , Dandelion , peach , apricot , plum , grape and other fruits I personally had a hand in cultivating . While they werent from anything close to a recognised vineyard , they were darned good . Today's wines , go suck on a match,,,,,,,
Edit , and the sulphites CAN be responsible for allergic reactions too....
