When my girlfriend and I were talking one day about what it would take to make the other one of us un-dateable, the number one thing on my list, above all others, was "If you spoke with a southern accent."

I dunno.....I think those people that talk like "southern gentry" or whatever sound pretty intelligent and civilized. They tend to have a vastly superior vocabulary to most people as well.....

Yes.

That accent, the Virginian Piedmont, tends to be one of the less harsh sounding of southern accents. It almost has a classy pronunciation to it.

I pronounce it toe-may-tow, but I am from the Virginia area and yes mater' sometimes slips through (depending on who im around). And tomatoes are horribly nasty.

And I agree with the southern accent thing. I would have died down here during the Daytona 500 if it wasn't for the scenario at Camp Blanding that same weekend.

If you live pretty much anywhere outside of the Savannah or metro-Atlanta areas, those school achievement mean almost nothing. Most Georgia schools dumb down their class a lot.

I have somewhat of a Southern accent. Not very noticable but you can kinda sense it. I speak with a more advanced vocabulary than most adults around here. But hell that aint saying much.

Second: I hate watching Matt Damon or Mark Wahlberg do Boston accents. It is usually not even close. He did like forget it in The Departed like you say though. Matt Damon did have a good one in Good Will Hunting though.

One more thing that really makes me hate Boston Accents in movies: The Perfect Storm starring Mark Wahlberg and George Clooney.

Marky Mark butchers the way everyone here pronounces Salisbury(Saulsberry). He says Salsbury. Anyway, I hate fake Boston accents even coming out of actors from the area..

This is true. Speech does. If you say, "that mutt there over yonder ain't my dog," it reflects your intelligence. If you say, "That is not my dog," in a Southern accent, I don't see how it does. There is nothing wrong with what was said, but because of HOW it was said that makes you stupid.
