Is cool. Saw my first game in A LONG time at the Verizon center in DC. The Capitals lost 2 - 0 but it was still fun to watch. I won a Tshirt and everyone got flags for fan appreciation day. In short, I think I am going to start watching more hockey.

You're in DC right now? Dude, I'm just north and west of Gallery-Place/Chinatown where the verizon center is located. Adams-Morgan FTW!

I was in DC since Thursday. I'm back in KC right now. If I would have known you lived there I would have broken into your place and stolen some of your PB crap. Darn. I guess hind sight is 20/20.

It may be baseball season, but hockey is still cool.

I played for 13 years. It got to be more of a job than fun, so I quit when I was a junior in high school.

Definitely a great sport. I've been thinking about getting back into it and playing pick-up games, but I doubt that's going to happen.

In other related skating/ice news, I saw Blades of Glory. It was a pretty good time. I suggest everyone who is a fan of Will Ferrel to check it out.

Actually, most of my gear lives in the trunk of my car. The 'cocker is currently in the back seat. Nelly is in pieces (having been stripped and RE-Painted due to scratching) in the gun bag in the trunk, and the 'trix is in the marker bag in the front seat.... got a few '98's I'm doing repair jobs on in the house, but that's not the good stuff.

Anyways, glad to see theres a new hockey fan.  Lucky for you, you got to see Alexander Ovechkin of Washington.  He's an amazing player.

I'm not gonna argue about popularity.  But I will argue that in no way is a bunch of guys standing around in a field more intense than guys skating, crashing and banging to score goals.

This is a little off base, but I think MLB playoffs and the NCAA Men's basketball are both considerably more intense than hockey. When your championships are hanging on just one pitch, or your deep run in March are dependant on one defensive stop. Also, every play in an Alabama football game is more intense than hockey.

I do think that my (and a good portion of the country's0 lack of interest in hockey is a direct result of regional exposure. If it's a place where there isn't ice, no one plays hockey. Nobody played hockey, so no one has interest.

I'd go to a hockey game over a baseball game anyday. I only care about one NCAA basketball team and one NCAA football team. So I would rather go to a hockey game than any other sporting event.

Anyone watch the hockey game last night? Quad-OT. And since it's the playoffs, each OT is a full period, not just 5 minutes. Canucks won it though, with probably 2 minutes left in (technically) the 7th period.

*edit*

Besides, how often does THIS happen in baseball:

Obviously, you aren't talking about the same type of intensity that 'freak is talking about. Mental intensity is one thing, but you can't seriously think that there is the same physcial intensity involved in pitching a baseball, even a 100 mph fastball, as there is for a winger to bring the puck from his own blue line, skating as hard as he can, through defensemen who will stop you any way possible, including a crunching body check, to make a shot on net.

More sarcasm.

There is no debating this fact: hockey is less popular in the United States, whatever the reason may be. That's all I was saying and then every hockey fan on the forum tries to give me their opinion as to why it's so OMG AWESOME. PEOPLES NECKS GET SLICED OPEN AND THATS SOO COOOL. Frankly, I don't care, and neither does most of America.

Absolutely not. That was not what I was trying to do. I respect any professional athlete, whether golfer, basketball player, football player, hockey player, et cetera for their absolute physical and mental dedication to the game.

Maybe not for cars, restaurants, etc., but you know as well as I do that Americans love their entertainment. Athletics in the US have a much higher quality than many other countries. Some NBA players won't even play in the Olympics because winning an NBA championship is a much, much higher honor than a gold medal at the Olympics. Why? The quality of competition is exponentially higher.

Thank you for helping prove my point. Why do Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash come to the NBA? It's the best league in the world.

And, even if you were trying to prove something else, here are the top ten players this year in the NBA:
  1. LeBron James, USA
  2. Kobe Bryant, USA
  3. Kevin Garnett, USA
  4. Gilbert Arenas, USA
  5. Dirk Nowitzki, Germany
  6. Elton Brand, USA
  7. Vince Carter, USA
  8. Shawn Marion, USA
  9. Tim Duncan, Virgin Islands
  10. Dwight Howard, USA
http://www.sportsline.com/nba/playerrankings/regularseason/O VERALL
Just to be fair, we should add Steve Nash, South Africa. 8/11 is a pretty solid amount.

And as far as all time, this list is the top 10:
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/nba/2003-02-06-dup ree-team_x.htm
Zero of them hail from foreign countries.

The only way to get season tickets to Alabama football is to wait 5-10 years for somebody to die. And the average ebay price for single tickets last year- $600.

Chewp, the best American athletes go into either football, basketball, or baseball... that's why there isn't the plethora of great American athletes in the NHL.

Whatever, the University of Kentucky basketball has higher average attendance than any NHL team, and the avg NBA attendance is more than double that of the NHL. I realize arena size plays a part, but if there were the demand for larger NHL arenas there would be.

You all can carry on talking about your less popular sport. (g)

They wouldn't be playing baseball, that's the damn point. I didn't mean that you could take Kobe Bryant right now and put him in the NHL. I meant, and previously stated, that if you took Kobe Bryant when he was 8 and he played hockey everyday instead of basketball, he could play in the NHL. Crazy? I think not.

Several people have been highly succesful at two major sports... Bo Jackson played in both the NFL and the MLB, as did Michael Jordan and others. Also, the #1 high school athlete in Pennslyvania, Terrelle Pryor, is a 5 star in both football and basketball. Choopie, and you kind of, missed what I was saying and just took my last quote.

Theres a hand full.  Most of them are goons with the exception of Jarome Iginla (whos one of the best players in the league) and Anson Carter.

Grant Fuhr, although he didn't look black, was.  He was a really good goalie.

Personally, the fact that an average american likes something, doesnt indicate any sort of quality to me... Look at average american cars, restaurants, and so forth. Not at all an indicator of quality or entertainment.

I have come to realize you hate most things American. Speaking of Cars, last time I checked Canada wasn't exporting too many of them...

I feel the need to once again point out that ice hockey is superior to any other sport.

This is not a valid argument. Most NFL football players come from college football teams. They were recruited into college football from scouts in high school. That's the way it works in most American sports leagues. Most American high schools don't have an ice rink in their gym...high school hockey teams play where there is already an ice rink. It's more of a budget thing than a popularity thing.

Think of how many less high schools would have football teams if there were only one field available in a town, and there were a dozen high schools to compete for time on the field, along with the general public.

I'm pretty sure they get the 5th overall pick, but there is talk that they'll probably use it to trade for a top forward since they already have a ton of good prospects.  Look out for Washington, they're gonna get really good, real soon.
