Get a 98 Custom. Just because its a shorter barrel doesnt mean it shoots bad. You dont need a 36inch barrel for range. But a 98 custom is a great gun for anyone. The upgrades are easy and cheap. Most people will say the same. Good luck and welcome to the forums.

What are you trying to accomplish by buying a new gun?  What are you looking for?

the main reason i want a new gun is  because i want to be able to do things to it i like the a5 because i know many people that have them and they say they blow the customs away and i no you dont need a huge barrel to shoot far but it i like 3 inches long

Both the 98c and A5 are highly customizable. Either would be a good choice for you.

I say keep your Model 98. You can always modify it to work with anything for the 98c or A5. (Execpt for A5 stocks and lpks and such)

The 98 Custom is the most upgradeable gun on the paintball market.  That being said the older Model 98 can also be just as upgadable with a little milling, what is the difference between the two?  Well the holes that can be made to readily accept an RT the Spot for e-grip (in custom pros) and not much else I can think of is different.

I love my 98 and I wouldn't ever switch it for an A5... people that tell you that the A5 blows the 98 away are all noobs!  Don't listen to them.  I found out that the 98 with a cyclone is actually a small tad faster than the A5 with a cyclone... someone on here gave a large explanation as to why.  Plus the 98 is lighter and less bulky than the A5 and is an all around great marker.  Don't give it up!

But yes you can get a better barrel if you see fit.

I might beg to differ.

While there are reasons why one might prefer a 98 over an A-5, there are also plenty of legitimate reasons why many, such as myself, consider the A-5 the far superior gun.

Some of the upsides of the A-5:

- Better Cyclone placement.  The 98 wasn't made for the Cyclone, and the hopper doesn't sit as tight to the body as it does on the A-5

- Field strip.  This is a big one.  To clean the 98 is a major deal.  To clean the inside of an A-5 takes 2 minutes.

- Modularity.  The 98 is one big lump; the A-5 is a collection of interchangeable pieces.  It makes tweaking and modifying much easier.  To tinker with the trigger on a 98, for instance, requires complete disassembly.  With the A-5, you simply take off the rear grip.  If you are a tweaker (guns, not meth), then this is huge.  Installing and adjusting the straw mod on a 98 can be a multi-hour project; on the A-5 it takes five minutes.

- Interchangeable breech.  Did I mention modularity?  If you have a bunch of cocker-threaded barrels, you don't need to get an adapter; you just get a cocker-threaded breach for the A-5.  No loss of performance due to an ugly adapter.

- Flatline.  The A-5 Flatline is better than the 98 Flatline (although some disagree).  This isn't as big of a deal as it used to be, because of the Apex, but still relevant.

Bottom line, however, is that they both shoot the same, and both are very reliable and solid guns that were made to play rough in the woods, so you can't go wrong.  Pick one of each up, play with it a little, and see how they feel in your hands.

Good luck.

Get an older model freestyle w/ an HE bolt....they can be found used for the price of an A-5....and are by far superior.

Rambino I have to agree but at the same time once both guns are apart I would MUCH rather work on a 98 not sayin the a5 is that much more complicated its just the 98 is so simple and most everyone...even noobs...can understand it...but that said they really shoot exactly the same...I would never give up my 98 but i would not be apposed to having an a5 either. Both are great guns!

I and many others on this forum have both the A5 and 98 custom. I will tell you this... Both are great guns! It basically comes down to what you can afford, What looks better to you, and what one feels better in your hands. I'm still not sold on the X7 yet. Time will tell.
