So, since it's prom time again, suit or tux? Which do you wear?

Suit looks timeless and classy. Theme your button up and tie to your date's dress. Find out which color dress she is wearing. Choose a tie that matches it in either color or general appearance. Then choose a nice button-down dress shirt that compliments that color well.
That process works every time, plus you get an excuse to buy a new tie and shirt. Cannot really have enough of them.
To me, tuxedos always looks like cheesy rentals. Always.
For God's sake don't wear a collarless shirt again.

When you have a chance to wear a bow tie, you wear a bow tie.
Everyone wears suits at my school, lame.

im doing a suit again. i cant justify spending $100+ to wear someone elses clothes for a few hours, then give them back, especially for a highschool dance, and doubly especially when a have a nice suit of my own to wear.
last year at prom, i told my then gf that i wasnt going to wear a tux to prom, she said it was ok. then a couple days before prom she said "when you said you werent wearing a tux, you were kidding, right?" when i told her i was serious, she said something about how im going to be the only one there who isnt in a tux and that i will stand out, like that was a bad thing.

I did. Class of '07 graduate in '06. But they allow early graduates to go to prom.
DD214 for knee cap out of place, they would not let me complete basic, so I spent 12 weeks there for nothing. Not really something I wanted to readily announce to the forum because people will be like "Oh you quit!" but since i was asked. I don't like being labeled a quiter when I hate no say in the matter.
And TKD, trust me, no more collarless.. its a button down with a tie I just bought yesterday. Matches her dress.

I got away with not wearing ANY kind of tie for my wedding.
Since we already had so many Irish-themed stuff incorporated into the wedding, my wife suggested all the guys wear http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barong_Tagalog - Barong Tagalogs to bring some Pinoy to the mix.
Rented black pants, wore my steel-toed wingtips, white T-shirt and the Barong. Most comfortable wedding ever.
I suggest you pretend to the Filipino for the day.

Linus, dislocated knee? ouch.
Join the club... i'm up to at least a dozen dislocations of my knee. The first one was obviously the worst to come back from... i was on crutches for a few days, couldn't do anything but walk for a few more weeks after that. Now it's just a matter of seconds until i'm able to get up and walk again. Now it goes out in the most random of times...
my biggest suggestion is always wear a knee brace whenever doing anything remotely physical... I've played paintball many times with one while sprinting, diving, crawling, you name it and I haven't had a problem...
and to get back on track... just to remind the forum population about my prom...

and

I like to think that I pull off a tux ok.

I bought a suit freshman year for $100 and have sported it on occasions. I laugh at people who rent a tux and only get to wear it once. Plus I purchased a dashing tie and shirt that goes perfectly with her dress.

I'll be wearing a suit, but I should be wearing a tux.
I actually had my parents convinced to buy me one, as my sister will almost certainly be getting married in the relatively near future, and I have at least 3, possibly 4 proms that I'll be going to within the next year.
That said, I already own a black suit, and my date's dress was supposed to be black, although I heard today through my twin brother's girlfriend that it is actually green...haven't checked up on that yet.
So I will most likely be wearing a black suit. Probably white shirt, black tie; or, if this green dress thing turns out to be true, possibly green shirt? Don't really know.
I still really want a tux though...
*EDIT By the way, I have a toga party on June 16th--my friend Cecilia's 16th birthday party (damn, I just realized I'll be 18 two months after that...). Should be awesome--and my brother's band is playing there...in togas.

Personally, the whole 'matching your date' is kind of tacky. As much as one wants to compliment their date by matching, black does go with everything, and for any formal engagement, why give up a reason to wear a tux?
When one thinks of a formal affair, look no further than the 'paint it black' mentality.
Now, to me, the perfect tux consists of a a medium or narrow lapeled, single breasted, one or two button, double vented jacket. The lapel is satin, as are the stripes on the pants, but nothing more. It can be matched with either a black tie or bow-tie. The shirt undernearth, while can be black, not everyone can pull that off, so white is clearly safe. French cuffs are a must aswell. I'm not a huge fan of the tuxedo shirt, but again, some can pull it off.
Lastly, just go with a regular collar, I was never a fan of those 'wing' collars, as it just screams rental tux.
To add individual touches, get a nice pair of cufflinks, an interesting tie bar, or even wear a pocket watch.
If you go the black suit approach, a 3-piece black suit is quite impressive aswell.
If you want to make things interesting, perhaps ditch the tie for a cravet or ascot:
Again, I'm not against other suit options, but formal screams black, and you should open your ears.

I'm with Funky--black for the win.
My date was just explaining her dress to me, and due to the unwritten rule (but by no means unknown to me) that men should never see their date's dresses before the night of, I think there is a good chance I may just go in a jacket and pants. Getting a tie and shirt that work with her dress is going to be pretty crazy, especially considering I have 6 days, starting now, to do it.
I can just stick my cuff links through my wrists, although I don't think her dress has any red in it.
Be prepared for pictures, for I shall inflict them upon you all.

Pshaw. Some people just go to far with it. Like when they match every single thing on the damn suit with the ladies dress.
I will use myself as an example of correctness.
Old picture, but that prom, my date wore a pink dress, roughly that shade of pink on the tie, detailed in black:
