Subject: My Roomie
Date Posted: 22 April 2007 at 5:43pm
My roommate has just taken his nerdyness to a new level. He already plays WoW (although not as much as before)

Today he went out and bought.....Pokemon..for his DS. Now he and one of our friends down the hall are playing pokemon.

I can see wanting to play Red or Blue for nostalgia reasons, and I probably WOULD do that. But going out and buying that new crap....cmon...

Theres 151, and thats it...anything more is blasphemy.

Agreed. I just downloaded red and blue, maybe I'll give them a shot. Seriously though, when they started adding new ones, I was like "wow, gg being out of ideas, so you add more stuff."

How did they not run into the other hundreds of types in their earlier adventures. How were they so sure there were 151, and now suddenly theres tons more. To hell with that.

My grandma wanted me to help her find the new pokemon for my cousin and when we gave it to him he was so amazed. But to be truly honest it's not that great I think that the first ones gold and silver included were the best.

Never got into pokemon....

I would like to point out though, that you made fun of your roomie for his elevated nerdyness for buying the new pokemon, and then made a decree on what you believe to be the correct pokemon dogma...A bit nerdy yourself, ay?

Note: I have nothing against nerdyness, just pointing that out...

I am a nerd, I know it, but I also have a social life. Either way, I wouldnt spend money on pokemon again, especially not like, as soon as it comes out.

I played red (the best of all without a doubt), silver, and gold. Never really played blue and I thought yellow was a lame idea. I think I liked red so much because I love charizard. I still think charizard is the best.

I am doing that currently.

Yeah, maybe it makes me a nerd, but I loved that game when it came out (5th grade maybe?).

It is just a nostalgic kick for me, I have no interest in any of the newer games.

Oh, and Red Cartridge > Blue.

There's been a big thread in ST about it.

IMO, Red > Blue.  I mean, the pokemon that were relegated to Blue were just weaksauce compared to the Red one's. I downloaded an emulator to play it a while back, but the only working version I could find was of Ruby.  Which I owned, but I don't think I ever beat it, as I was getting tired of the games by Silver.

Does it make me a nerd that I could probably still effectively name a huge majority of the original pokemon?

They're still making those things? I know a couple people who play them during 1+ hour(s) car rides, and thats about it.

As a matter of fact, a friend of mine just told me that after about a year, he has finally beaten one of them (maybe it was yellow he said?). He said he played it every time he went to the bathroom for #2, and that was the only time he'd ever play it.

At this point in my life I hate the Pokemon franchise with a passion, but ... if I were to rag on any of you for playing, I would be full of it, considering that in my own younger years, I did play blue through to it's completion. The game itself isn't bad (especially the original GameBoy carts), it stands up to other RPGs for the erra. I just got sick and tired of seeing that sickeningly cute yellow rat every place I looked ... I have a natural contempt for anything reduced to a Yu-Gi-Oh style kid craze 'main stream' status.

So ... in summary, I salute Pokemon, not for what it is today, but what it started out as ... a good RPG.

I bet as your roomie plays pokemon, he's telling his buddy how much of nerd his roomie is because he goes on the computer so much.

I played Fire Red again last year, all the memories came flooding back. Good times.

Farfetch is uber nice.

You bite your tongue good sir.  Yu-gi-oh was a pathetic attempt to cash in on the pokemon craze, and I had to deal with my brother watching that crap all the time.

Oh, and Red > Blue.

I got pokemon blue, cause I like blue. I still started with charizard though.

Anyone else notice that in pokemon red, your default name is ash, and in pokemon blue, your default name is gary.
Same with your enemy, he's opposites. Gary in red, Ash in blue.

Oh well. I got blue for my KiGB emulator, and I'm currently playing it

I have never played WoW - but nor do I pretend NOT to be a geek.

My NUMBER ONE complaint with Pokemon is the anime ... what kind of retarded concept is it for the little infernal creatures to speak their name as the only form of verbal or audio communication?? It's not catchy, it's not even tactfully cheesy ... it's a migrane waiting to happen. It is that one thing that has singlehandedly turned my heart away from the franchise for over a decade now.
