I don't understand why Spanish is required to be taken in high schools and for some jobs. Why should I learn Spanish? This just means that the Mexicans wont have to learn English. I think it is complete bull crap. I am happy my class was the last to not have a foreign language in order to graduate.

Ironic, that they want you to learn something in school isn't it?

Because we can't make "them" take English, as ESL in schools is a joke.  At least that way, they educate the group that will be forced to interact with those who cannot speak english.

You get more money and are open to more jobs if you are bi-lingual. It also looks damn good on a college application.

I was under the impression that a foreign language was required, not just Spanish specifically? Anyways, you should learn it because it is a vital language in this country. Whether or not you like it, a large percent of the population speaks Spanish. You are at a disadvantage if you do not. Next, GG for assuming every Hispanic person is a "Mexican." Lastly, do you plan on attending college? Most schools require several years, if not more.

I took french in elementary/ highschool because 1) I wanted to learn it, and 2) It's good to be even slightly semi-fluent in another language. It increases employment opportunities, and could make travel easier in the future too.

Cry about it.

Personally, I'll probably keep taking Spanish through college, because I actually think it will be useful. I hope to visit as many countries as possible, and knowing Spanish will get me through all of South America and the Iberian peninsula (Portugeuse people understood me just fine when I talked to them in Spanish, I assume Brazilians will be the same), plus Central America and the Carribean. Never hurts to be able to communicate.

Also, Spanish is a way better language than English. Way more logical at least.

The purpose of school is to prepare you for life and work.  Foreign language is a useful and relevant skill, just like math and geography.  You will be a better and more educated person for learning.  If anything, US schools do way too little foreign language.  In most industrialized countries foreign language is taught starting in grade school, and they frequently teach two or more.

Politicizing this is completely idiotic.

Nope. Each Spanish country, beside the European ones, speak totally different dialects. My mom is fluent in spanish because he whole family speaks it (for some reason, she never taught me and the schools asigned me to a French class...go me), but when she went to Peru, she had a hard time understanding many words. But whenever we go to PR to visit my grandparents, she understands everyone.

That they do, french is a good language. Also, if you're like me, you'll get a gf who's taking french in university and be able to help her with getting started on that, and be a total stud for it.

Errr... the main purpose of publicly funded schools is to provide an educated and well informed individual so that they might be able to make informed and logical decisions as necessitated by living in democracy (such as what are the issues/ problems, and whom do I vote for). It is considered a necessity by Thomas Jefferson for a democracy to function properly, without tyrrany. Any other outcome or purpose of education it secondary to this states end.

I'm assuming that every Mexican you know and speak to is within the US. I sure hope they speak English...

Anyways, I've dropped Spanish after my required years. My application would look better with more Spanish credits on it, but my application is already very good. If I need to take it later, I'll take it then. My schedule for next year is already looking very hard and time-consuming, so I dropped Spanish.

Either way, if you simply wanted to learn it so you could actually use it in life, not just to look good on a college application, you could easily teacher yourself. Just memorize vocab words, verb-tense changes, and stem changes within verbs.

Spanish trocks.

I'm supposed to be a Spanish minor, but that kinda fell through. I suppose I can always take classes once I'm out of school. I just can't fit it in right now, even though I really want to.

So if a legal citizen speaks Spanish, they are not as American as you are?
