So I bought some parts and started cutting/assembling the shoulder-launched model rocket delivery system that I posted the ideas for before.
Some basic questions that have come up:
What type of battery do these things need? Will a 9v work, or do I need to go bigger?
I prefer to not have my face burned so what is a good length for the part of tube that extends in front of you that the rocket won't burn your face? I will have a face shield and a paintball mask on but just to be sure, how long should it be in front?
Again, not going to be a weapon.

I suggest you go buy a model rocket kit and observe the flame at launch for yourself.

4.5 volts total. The launcher button I have is powered by 3 AA batteries (If I remember correctly).
Your best bet is to have each round have a some metallic strips. One for the base and one ring. The tube will have connections to connect those two strips to close the circuit. All you'd need to do is push the button.

Exactly what I was going to do
Except I bought some t-shaped pipe so I can just take out the plug, send the rocket down the front, and wire it in the middle.
Do you think a 9v would still would or would I have to wire 3 AA's together?

The rocket launcher, face mutilation or both?
There will be pics up tonight.
Firing is a month away when I go to my cottage in Wasaga Beach after school. (beach=safer)
I only have about half the parts bought including a red dot for random coolness.
The month should give me enough time to raise the money to finish it. My goal to never work retail has it's ups and downs.

Without being sarcastic I think you should put 2 triggers on it, and a spring in the back, so that way you first use the spring to launch it out then the other trigger ignites once its out far enough. I think that would make it a little safer.

I don't know how I would wire that
Was toying with the idea of a rocket launched out before the charge ignites but I just don't know how i'd pull it off.
I do plan on having a safety switch as well as a trigger switch.
No promises on safety equipment from cardboard.
God, I will do my best to make a vid of this.

It's a freakin' model rocket engine. Unless the projectile weighs more than a pound, it will only take a fraction of a second for it to leave the barrel. The flame is also really small and concentrated. The most protection he will need will be at the breach.
I used a PVC pipe as a launcher before. It was not touched by the flame and the pipe was the exact same diameter as the engine. Only the grass got burned.

Safety is adequate. As long as the base plate is thick metal (the "launch pad" I have is beginning to have holes) you should be fine.
The rocket design looks pretty stable. I'd go for it if I were you.

What you you mean by base plate?
------------- <just say no to unnecessarily sexualized sigs>
|
Posted By: Tolgak
Date Posted: 21 May 2007 at 12:36pm
The "Launch Pad" I have which came with the only rocket KIT I've ever bought (made most of the rockets I had by myself) consisted of a stand, a long thick wire (to guide the rocket in it's first 3 feet) and a base plate, which is the metal I'm talking about.
I meant that the most important thing you need to get for safety is something to put at the very back of the barrel that cannot be burned through by the engine, unless you want to run it without recoil.

I found my old rocket supplies.
Mostly I used A8-3 and C5-3 engines.
The last time I bought engines was about 3 years ago. It was a pack of 24 engines and I still have over half of them left.
I can't remember what the numbers mean. I think the letter is the power of the engine (A is the lowest and E is highest) and the numbers are burn time - parachute ejection after burn-out.
If what I'm saying is correct, C engines should suit you fine for the projectiles, maybe even B engines. It sounds like an RPG sort of thing so a longer burn time would be nice and a shorter parachute ejection time, unless you want the projectile to travel a bit farther without risking it falling apart from the parachute stage.

------------- <just say no to unnecessarily sexualized sigs>

It too could work. All depends on the amount of space you have really. More power and burn time will only take it farther. You will only know what works after testing your projectile.

Using explosives and projectiles can always be dangerous. We all know that.
Maybe a gas grill igniter and some engine starting fluid
Experimenting with the length of the stick on a simple bottle rocket tells me that your preliminary picture of the projectile isn't enough to figure out the balance. What I'm saying is that you could be in for a surprise.

You can't buy model rocket engines in whitehorse. Years and years ago, some kids kidnapped a teachers wife, or a teacher, or something and had made pipebombs and stuff out of model rockets. As far as I know, she was fine in the end, but you havent been able to buy model rocket engines here in a long time cause of it.

I haven't used any model rockets in quite some time but I do remember a little about them. When choosing which engine to use, I would be very careful. It depends greatly on the weight of the projectile and how aerodynamic it is. Judging by the picture you posted, it seems like the rocket would need to be very balanced in terms of weight to remain stable. The wings are in the middle of the body and will act as a pivot point that may allow the rocket to dive if it's too front heavy or hook upward if the back is heavier. The wings in the back look a bit thin but may be enough to keep it steady. I would build it and test it out, possibly by tying it to a string and swinging it around. It sounds ridiculous but that should let you see if it has any serious aerodynamic issues before actually launching it. If you tie the string to the center of the body (roughly just behind the wings), hold it parallel to the ground, and start to spin while holding the other end of the string it should stay level after you release it. You could also get a really powerful fan and try to simulate a wind tunnel somehow if the spinning thing doesn't float your boat. Other than that, you pretty much just have to guess and test fire it.
Assuming it does fly straight, the weight will determine how much power the engine needs to provide to get the range you're looking for. Unless it's pretty heavy or you're looking to shoot it to the next continent, I'd advise against anything above a C class engine. According to the packaging on the rockets I used to have, a C6-7 engine could take it to over 1,000 feet straight up. Granted that thing was just a few pieces of cardboard and plastic, the range is affected more when fired straight up. If that thing had been designed to fly horizontally it would probably have gone a lot further (Imagine throwing a frisbee straight up compared to throwing it normally). I recommend using a B engine as a test if the projectile is fairly light and then working your way up from there. If this thing is not stable and you fire it off with a D or E engine you could seriously hurt yourself or somebody else.

Carl- do a test launch mounted on a work bench or something with a melon resting where your head would be in relation to the launcher.

So i'm gona bump this for now... start a new thread later
I have the rocket pretty much built.
I understand that some people here have said to use 4 AA batteries.
My question is if a 9v will work also?
I am having troubles fitting the AA holder into the handle.
Oh and bri: Little late but Wasaga is awesome. If you get a chance, make sure you are there for corvette weekend. They have live bands almost every week... pretty big bands. I should have my glider's license, and hopefully will be spending time up there also.
EDIT: If i attached a small led light (and got a 4AA batter hookup), do you think that it would take enough away from the connection that it won't be able to heat the wire enough for safety?

Tolga FTW! But I assume Whale is on the English/History side of the
abilities spectrum, and doesn't have any intrest in, doesn't have the
urge to, and/or gets no special feeling in making things. He also probably reads instructions before doing things, unlike people like us who just jump right into things.
Sorry if I made any false assumptions Whale.

Not multi-stage in the sense of rockets meaning that they are composed of multiple parts.
Multi-stage in that it has one charge that pushed the rocket out of the launcher, and another that ignites it, carrying it to it's target. Obviously here, the second charge failed.
