I am currently looking up reasons why or why not humans are natuarally evil, I thought it might make a good discussion thread. So I'll start off; Humans are good becasue there is no such thing as good and evil until society defines the boundries of what is good and evil.

I used to think people were made good and turned by society, but I have re-evaluated that of late.
I'm beginning to think that people are inherently evil, and are kept in check by society.

Who gets to define good or evil? Why do you perceive particular actions or behaviours as evil or good? Is it possible you could be wrong, or that other interpretations could be used as well?

Read frankenstein, a clockwork orange, and research humanistic vs psychoanalysis in pyschology, that should help you out.
If you don't have time then pm me and I'll tell you why frankenstein and a clockwork orange might help you.
Also choop thanks for bringing that kind of thinking up. Just went through all sorts of therapy to try and stop myself from thinking about every little thing like that and boom, someone that thinks the same way comes along and off I go.

Personally I think "our Evilness" starts out at a VERY young age, I think our first few memories we do "seep" in is what we become, I mean if your brought up in White suburbia, and your family is not stricken by any bad luck... chances are you may not go "postal" on some people.
But if your beginning memories are of parents "neglecting" you to go to the Bar or do some other Stuff, chances are you will grow anti-social behaviors etc... Personally I think its the first 7yrs of Human life that will determine our... "Neutrality/Evil/Good"

"Good" and "Evil" are labels that are man-made and can be changed to to fit those in powers need.
For instance, it is good in Texas to eat beef, but in India it is Evil. Same behavior, different need.

True. Meat on Friday. Working on Sunday. Blah blah blah. These all however have ties to Religion, and it is a man-made fantasy to what is defined as good and evil.
Example? Gluttony. Being fat is evil? Nah. You are not evil just because some stupid book labels you so.
However there are some that go above and beyond religion. What we're programmed to believe in. Example? Mugging people! That is just flat out evil. Ganging up on somebody walking home one night to remove him of his posessions is just evil.
Robbing people, raping people, killing somebody in cold blood, etc. These are all essentially evil traits. Unless you can find the instance where shoving a girl into an ally and raping her is God's will and you're doing the community a public service... But I'm going to doubt that.

I agree that murder and rape is evil. Eating meat isnt.

I disagree. From one extreme evolution perspective, shoving hundreds of ladies into an ally and raping them better increases the chance of successfully passing your genetics to another generation. I think Khan (or some other Asian ruthless fighter) was rumored to have had a significantly high number of children resulting in 16 million + (in this generation) of his genes circulating on this earth. This would be very good from an evolution perspective.
By bringing in God's will your adding religion into the mix.
Taking someone's possessions at night? Survival of the fittest. Murder? Again survival of the fittest. Gang members killing each other for turf are trying to "survive."
Now whether or not someone would do these things is not relevant based on society's or personal definitions of good and evil but I still stand by the notion that it is all a matter of perspective. There is not "predetermined good and evil."

Khan's eldest son, Tushi, is reported to have had 40 sons. Documents written during or just after Khan's reign say that after a conquest, looting, pillaging, and rape were the spoils of war for all soldiers, but that Khan got first pick of the beautiful women. His grandson, Kubilai Khan, who established the Yuan Dynasty in China, had 22 legitimate sons, and was reported to have added 30 virgins to his harem each year. |

Regardless, the point still stands. The more chances of spreading genetic material to the next generation the better chance of evolutionary survival, which biology would say is "good."

I think you become "evil" (I hate that term) when you violate your own personal moral disciplines.
Humans are naturally a blank slate-they are born with nothing, and gradually build up their own ideas of right and wrong. The point at which you choose to do that which you hold as wrong, you are, for your own intents and purposes, evil.
As far as society's ideas of evil, there really is no general interpretation of the word. What America in general calls evil, other countries call a way of life, so I tend to think that good and evil are personal definitions, and only you can define yourself as evil.
Of course in the scheme of things it really doesn't matter. Think of the worst events in history, the holocaust, the civil war, the black plague, genocide, humanity has been defined by it's "evil" acts. We still exist despite them, so they have neither a negative nor positive impact on our race. My opinion, anyway. I will continue to hold my concepts of evil, with the knowledge that they are simpy a concept, not a definition, much like my concept of time.

Choop, Hades, That was what I was getting to, that we must define "good" and "evil" otherwise there is no such thing. (My teacher started going off on me about being on the forum so I just finished the sentence and exited out.)

obviously because we are all born with the sin of man, and have it unless we accept Jesus Christ as our savior and become forgiven.

Man is born with the capacity to do either, otherwise how can the "good" or "bad" stuff. If man was born pure good, or pure bad, we wouldnt ever get any of the other in the world.

In basic theory, yes. Man is an empty slate, built up by his surroundings. Your beliefs, your idealogy, everything is built up by your experiences and those around you. This always throws people back in religion debates-
Person A says his religion is right, and person B is going to hell. Person A is convinced in his mind there is no other way, but fails to take into consideration that person B also feels the same way, and is just steadfast in his opinion. Which is why it is pointless to argue religion-people's religion is formed by a lifetime of enviroment. The same goes for the definition of good and evil-you feel rape is wrong because society has told you from birth that rape is wrong. The same goes for hate, racism, murder, theft, what have you. Definitions of society.

I agree in part, that moral borders are created in society, (and are being quickly destroyed), but for some reason I believe that, if say 5 baby's were stranded on a desert island, and somehow lived, i think that some human morals are more then created from the environment around us, but some are just encoded in is.
From an evolutionary stand point you could say, as we evolved in to a social being we also evolved some moral stand point, that is encoded into us at birth,
From a creation stand point, this already exists, as the bible is supposed to be out moral compass, and the holy spirit is supposed to guide us to good, while Satan convinces us to do evil.
well, then this comes back around to the definition of good and evil, which of course, from evolutionary and creation stand points will have different meanings, but also should be close to identical once you take out all the religious stuff in creations view.

As has been pointed out the definition of "evil" is extremely vauge. Most people don't have a set explaination of evil, using more of the "I know it when I see it" approach to calling something evil.
Now, the real question that I see is "What is the difference between something evil and something immoral?"
For instance, most people have a deep feral urge at one point or another. Something in the back of your mind comes up with a dark fantasy of say tearing someones throat open just to watch them die. It is the natural hunter part of us. It was how our race survived.
Now surely doing that would be immoral, by pretty much anyones standards, but how does acting on an instinct rise to the level of evil?
By the other side of the coin, there is almost no such thing as "good" to me. What can be defined as a good act? If your belief is that it is something that falls in line with moral behavior then as moral is defined culturely then there is no way to define good.
The end result of the debate that I see is simply this, seeing as how you cannot solidly define good or evil, then niether can the position of humanity. It is much more likely that people are simply too animalistic to be defined by anything other then their instincts.
