Infinity has no finite relation to any number, i measures nothing, and represents nothing since we cannot ralate anything to it, all other numbers have a set and finite amount, where as Infinity is in fact infinite. but since there is nothing else infinite it represents nothing and is comparable to nothing, thus showing, Infinity doesnt exsist.
But how can that be true you ask? my math teacher told me it exsists, well it does... numbers are infinite, but with the argument given above infinity CANNOT exsist. confused yet? well thats why we call it a paradox. -My paradox of infinity
I know most of you dont care, but I'm a nerd. i cant help it.

Infinite isn't really an amount. It's more of a word that is to describe an amount.

Numbers are finite. Infinity is for stuff like limits. It's just a symbol that tells you that the number that could be there is getting infinitely big. I choose to think of infinity as being approximately 1 ba-zillion. It helps me visualize stuff like that.

not entirely true, infinity can be a limit, 1/infinity=0
also, most of math you cant relate to anything after you get into calculus and complex algebra.

I do agree that it does exsist, but at the same time how can it as in infinity in relation to numbers? infinity is sposed to represent an uncountably high number that goes on forever, but all numbers are finite they can all be counted and measured in relation to other numbers. so how can it exsist *at least in relation to other numbers*

Infinity is an approach
Or if you take a stats class, it's roughly the same as 1E99. :D

Well it's definitely not a number. It's like a concept that crossdresses as a number on weekends.

if you really think about it, everything in the world relates to numbers, one way or another.
also, we are the wrong people to be talking about this, we got maybe 3 or 4 ppl with grade 11 or 12 math, and maybe a couple first or second year university math, no real mathematicians here,

hmm. this thread amuses me.
i would put it in the more common terms such as the words "several, few, and many".. Words that describe a value, but give no definite value.

the most ironic part is, oh great scholar of Stryo, your comment is 100% completely wrong, infinity is a limit actually used in math, few and many is never used...

| sarcasm was uncalled for.
But you're right.
i know infinity is used in math, but how much is it used in the every-day common math? not much. It is used more to describe a number, than an actual number, kinda like imaginary numbers.
the amusing part is the comparisons. Infinity=Cross dresser made me smile.

I guess that in practical terms, that you could argue for the impossiblility of infinity for a number. However, for mathematics, it still needs to be defined for certain situations, even if it isn't a normal value.

are you one of those kids who tries to prove the teacher wrong with your wack-job theories that are so easily proved wrong, but yet you won't give it up?
There always seems to be one of those in classes... it's especially funny in college, when a kid is arguing with a person who has spent the majority of their life teaching and studying these concepts.

On the other end of the spectrum, 0 is a relatively new concept.
Mystery has its own mysteries, and there are gods above gods. We have ours, they have theirs. That is what's known as infinity.
—Jean Cocteau (1889-1963), French author and filmmaker
Limits and things of that nature were devised to avoid infinity.

Since we are on the subject of math, acn anyone here tell me why 1^(infinity) does not equal 1?
I missed the discussion on that in Cal 2.

No. A NUMBER is finite. NUMBERS are infinite. Sneaky didn't even write that, I've seen it a number of times.
