My girlfriend of nearly a year left me this morning.

She is in a study abroad thing. Called me from Athens.

This is less than 24 hours after she said we were good.

...Sigh...

Don't dwell on this. Keep your head up high and take it gracefully. You'll be great.

No that's something dudes do.

More than likely she didnt have the heart to break up in person. It's hard to hurt someone face to face, specially when its someone you love.

Sucks dude not much I can say. hang in there.

That video was great.

But seriously, you're probably better off.  If she doesn't have enough balls to do it in person you probably didn't do anything wrong.  Take some time off.  Play some CSS.

I'd hesitate to say things like this. It's possible that she intended on maintaining the relationship, but once she got there, she realized she couldn't. Or maybe she did bang some other dude. You may be better off not knowing, but don't burn that bridge yet. Maybe she'll come back and be hot for ur bod.

Chin up, mister Whale.

As much as you don't want to, just have to view it from the perspective that "it wouldn't have worked out anyway". Although, it'll probably be a few weeks before that actually sinks in.

From your post... I'm guessing she didn't give a reason why?   Hopefully she did. That was the worst part for me, my last year at University... I wasn't given a reason. Ate me up. She never did tell me either... although I found out for myself when I delivered the box of her belongings I had gathered up from my place and spied the picture of the new beau on her desk. Some relief from that I suppose.

Anyway... carry on. Try not to dwell. You'll find your match. And I'm sure he'll be pretty.

Time is the true healer. You never know what will happen but try to see it as an opportunity. She may have been special but she did do the things she did. People are strange and you never know when another door will open. Just stay positive.

I lost a girl a few months ago and think it was for the best. She had another guy in mind. Nothing I could do.

Lately I'm getting close with an ex of mine so you never know what the future could be.

Tough break man, really.

I've only seen one relationship work that had distanced factored into it. Studying/working abroad is almost a natural kiss of death to a relationship. I don't know why, but I've seen it happen a half a dozen times.

You'll come through it okay.

The toughest part of that, my guess would be the 24 hour turnaround....because that means something went really sour in a day, or she's been lying to you.

Well, best of luck getting past her.

That sucks dude, hang in there. As hard as it is to believe when a relationship falls apart, it happens all the time, and almost everybody gets over it eventually.

It's gonna be rough for a while, and now is really a time for some poor decisions. On some primitive level, you begin to think of yourself as part of a couple, making poor decisions is part of this, since you need to understand that nobody is going to place a check on your bad behavior. The faster you realize this the easier being single will be.

Give yourself a few days, get yourself a nice bottle of rum, find a social gathering with mixed company, don't drink until it effects your speech, but have a few. Find the most attractive female there who appears to be single, give her your "a" game. It doesn't matter if you don't have a chance in hell, or if she turns out to not have anything interesting to say, if you can start a conversation with an attractive member of the opposite sex you can't be that repulsive. There's also the possibility that you find one who's not even worth attempting to talk to, in which case, you're better than somebody. Enjoy the thought, have another drink, repeat. It's not about finding a rebound girl, it's about reminding yourself that you still have the social tools at your disposal to do this.

but enough seriousness. Think back on it, things went South when you got your hair cut didn't they?

I am normally not one to post personal things going on in my life, but since I already did, I figure why not.

Since I started this thread, I figured I would post a quick update.

So after it happened, I went into a bit of a funk in my life. I was depressed and generally just plain out of it.

She said that she just needed to be out of the obligation of a relationship for a while. She said she needed some time to just go where life takes her, to discover who she was in life, and she couldn't do that with me.

I accepted that.

We decided to start talking, just as me and her, not as an 'us.'

We talked a lot. She called me more than she ever did while we were together.

A few days ago I told her I still loved her, and that I would still be here if she decided that she wanted back in a relationship. She said she still loved me too, and she still had a romantic spark for me.

Today she called me, and said that she really missed me, missed being able to call and ramble and gush when she wanted. She said that she could see herself with me again at the end of the summer when she gets home.

We set up a day to go out on a date when she gets back in town.

So that is that.

Eh... I'm a little....iffy on that. She wants to get back together, but not till after she's done travelling. I'd be hoping for something like her missing you a ton/ realizing the mistake, and wanting to get back together asap

good luck either way.

I would be willing to bet with every dollar I have that inside, that is what she is thinking, that she wants to get back together now. However, I know her personality, and she is a bit stubborn in the idea that once she does something or makes up her mind, it takes a bit for her to come back on it.

Because I know this about her personality, the fact that she is already saying she wants to get back together as soon as August, I am taking it as a good sign.

I had a relationship like that.  We got back together in the same day.

I know you might think it's cool and all, but in all honesty, it will never be the same.  You will always have this thought in the back of your mind whether or not she's trustworthy.  I know it's extremely hard to accept now but I can almost 100% guarantee that that will be the outcome.  Don't do it.

Broken trust is a like a broken bone; It may get better but never fully heal.

Oh yea I came up with that on my own.

Tae I honestly think you should sit down with her once she gets back and just stare into her eyes for as long as possible. I think that by that you will know if you should stay with her or not. You will know what I mean if you do it.

The thing is that I don't not trust her. I still trust her 100%.

If I didn't still trust her I would have walked away from the very beginning. Trust is everything in a relationship.

I think she felt the distance of being apart creep up, and she got scared and made a quick decision, nothing more.

I still love her, and will take her back in a flash.

I think you'll be fine.

Sounds like everything is going smoothly, despite a minor speed bump in the beginning.

Time spent apart is a good test.
For most, it completely destroys a relationship... either immediately, or over time. But if you can get thru this, it's definitely a good sign in regards to the future.

My wife left for 4mos Study Abroad in Costa Rica just 5 or so weeks after we started dating. No phone calls... just quick emails whenever she was able to get to an internet cafe. Even after she came back, I had already graduated... so we only saw each other 6-8 days a month (3 out of 4 weekends) for the following 6mos.   After we were engaged, I moved down to VA... saw her even less.

But it all worked out. Things were never shaky or iffy. Now we see each other almost every waking hour, as she works in the next building over. And I haven't scared her off yet.

But the almost two years that we spent distanced from each other was a good indicator.

While the new info regarding her wanting to get back together is good news... the fact that she is unwilling to maintain commitment while away is still something to keep an eye on. If you can't maintain commitment while away, commitment while together means nothing. It could very well be that she just wants a free-mind while in Europe... and we'll all hope for that. But I can't help but feel that she could still very well focus on Europe and her studies without having to put the relationship on hold.

To me, the troublesome thought isn't in regards to trust... it's just about willingness. It should never be that either of you feels the other is any kind of "burden". And that's how I read into her plan for a break while away. The thought of her seeing other people wouldn't have been my concern (you trust her, period)... the thought that it was just too much to maintain "us" while away, that would've eaten me up.

It sounds as if she might have come to the realization that she made an error... which is definitely a good sign. Everyone is entitled to make a mistake or two.

I'll hope that things work out for you.
