The Story:
“Halo: Dark Territory” A Black Cat Scenario By Jonathan Foust
Admiral Stewart’s gray hair shined in the light of the holo-projector as Colonel Bernhardt tried to clean up the secure signal he was on. The expeditionary force that Bernhardt commanded was deep in Covenant territory, and as such all of their communications were coded, shielded, and piggybacked on other signals. This tri-layered security was necessary, but it made communications difficult and sporadic.
“… reading me?” the Admiral was saying.
“I read you, sir,” Col. Bernhardt responded. “We are almost in position now.”
“I’m told that you will move beyond communications range in the next twelve minutes, Marine. Once you hit dark territory there will be no way for us to contact one another. You will be in sole command of the whole force- Marines and Spartans. You know how important it is for the UNSC to strike back at the Covenant after all the devastation that they have caused. Your mission is not just to crush the Covenant outpost on Dryad II… it is to bring hope to all the allied planets of the galaxy. Good *static* and God speed.”
The UNSC symbol appeared and floated in the space where the Admiral had been a few moments before. The Colonel exhaled a deep breath. There was more than just one reason for the secrecy of this mission. If they succeeded, their victory would be broadcast to every screen in the confederation. If they failed, however, the UNSC could deny that they ever even heard of him or his men. A precarious situation to say the least.
Major Forbes stepped into the room and saluted. “Navigation reports that we are entering the target system, sir. All units are ready to deploy. We will be in orbit within the hour.”
Colonel Bernhardt nodded. He knew that his Marines were the hardest that he had ever seen. Each one was ready to trade his life for the cause- each one determined to take ten Covenant lives for each human that they had killed. He also knew that he had a squad of Spartans with him; genetically and cybernetically enhanced super-soldiers. The training that all had undergone should allow them the descend on Dryad II and turn that Covenant outpost into a smoking crater.
Colonel Bernhardt also knew that in this war “should” was worth a whole handful of diddly-squat.
Looking out the view port of his quarters, Colonel Bernhardt took in the swirling orange sphere of the target planet. Millions of miles below him he knew that the surface of Dryad II was swarming with creatures that filled the nightmares of every feeling soul in the UNSC.
The next 24 hours would seal the fate of every man in his command… including his.
