So I stopped by a Saturn dealership today to test out a Redline.
Turns out there is a bit of a waitlist for Redlines, but they did have a regular Sky that I could tool around in a bit. Fair enough. Apparently they drive about the same, except for the engine.
But here's the issue: The guy takes me on a test drive that consists ENTIRELY of straight lines. The only turns had stopsigns attached. He found me ONE little bitty s-turn, but that was it. And then he had the audacity to tell me I was speeding. As if I didn't know that.
So, having now test driven a Sky, I know that it is underpowered and that it is a pretty comfortable ride for a little sports car, but I know absolutely nothing about how it handles or corners. Totally useless drive.
Seriously - if you are trying to sell sports cars, shouldn't you have a route planned that has some turns involved?
Grr.

Pschh, sports cars arent for performance, they're for balding guys to drive by where local teens/ young adults hang out with the top down, shades on, as slowly as possible while still looking nonchalant

Saturn dissapointed me with the Ion. It is very unreliable. The Sky looks very nice, I just don't know if I could trust it. I would proabably be best off with a Kia.

why would you ever get a sky? they look good, but like you said, it's a saturn. for roughly the same price as the sky, why not get a v-8 mustang gt? that would kill a sky in performance, looks, sound, the whole 9 yards.

A mustang will not corner like the sky. Small 2 seater sports cars are fun to drive, probably more fun than a mustang. Plus, how often do you see a saturn sky compared to a mustang?

My wife and I test drove the Saturn Sky and the Pontiac Solstice (same car, different body panels) almost exactly a year ago. Definitely underpowered. Cornering was ROCK solid... One of the best handling cars I've ever driven.
Then Pontiac came out with the Solstice GXP and Saturn came out with the Redline. There are some differences from what I understand, but both have apparently resolved the underpowered issue.
BE VERY CAREFUL THOUGH... Ask the dealership about the weight limit on the car's frame. When we test drove them, there was a big yellow sticker on the runner panels that said "WARNING: Passenger and cargo weight not to exceed 360 pounds." Apparently they'd shaved weight off the frame to improve performance and the warranty was void if your frame was bent and they could show that you'd exceeded this posted limit. (At the time, I was 270 and my wife was 115, so that pretty much sealed it.)
Most people ignore these warnings, but the cars haven't been out long enough to determine whether this will get them into trouble.

We were looking at the Sky / Solstice versus a BMW 325i versus a Mustang GT last July for my wife's new car. We had pretty much decided on the Solstice (only because the Sky's were special order only at the time) before we saw the yellow warning label I talk about in my post above. Because of that, and because the BMW was a sedan, we went with the Mustang GT...
So... Why was the Sky / Solstice in the lead at first? Styling has a lot to do with it. They are sexy cars, whereas the Mustang is a little more ordinary. But gas mileage was a big factor also. The GT requires Premium at $3.45 a gallon, 19 MPG. The Solstice can use Regular at $3.10 a gallon, 30 MPG.
Combine those things with the fact that the Solstice / Sky is smaller and definitely handles a little better than the GT and I can completely understand why someone would go that direction.

I also wasn't initially planning on buying a Saturn, and I was a little turned off by the brand. But I really like the way the Sky looks, and the performance reviews were consistently good (once the engine issue was resolved), so I figured I would give it a go.
Which is why the test drive was so disappointing - I got no chance to feel the handling. I drove an SL550 a few months ago in the same neighborhood, and that dealer had no problems finding me an interesting drive.
As to the Mustang - not on the list, will never get on the list. As Sandman guessed, I am looking for that small-car zippy feeling. I also want a car with decent mileage, and preferably something fairly unusual. The Mustang fails on all of those counts, image concerns aside.
But while we've got the car crowd interested - any thoughts on the Z4 or SLK? Do I surrender my penis by sitting in either of those cars?

Hell no. We briefly looked at those cars also. Steph didn't like the body style of the Z4 and the SLK was more than we were looking to spend.
I, on the other hand, would have definitely gone with one of the BMW's... The Z4 was a blast to drive and VERY sexy IMO. Plus you get the "white prop on blue sky" logo that looks very nice in the garage.
The SLK is a little more girly, but I've always viewed it as the poor man's SL... Just says you're not a millionare but you still like the Mercedes roadsters.
:)
Didn't drive the SLK, though, so can't comment on actual performance.

That's my feel of the SLK as well... unnecessarily expensive and a little girly. The killer on the SLK is that it is almost impossible to get a stick version in the US.
I do like the hardtop, though. True ragtops still bother me a bit.
The Z4 is looking pretty good, although there are a lot of them on the road.
Haven't driven either one yet, though. The Sky was the first test drive in this cycle. We'll see.

One note... After some looking online when we were looking at them, I heard the Z4 is monumentally bad on slick roads. Something to do with being light, RWD, and very wide tires.

I've heard that as well. Not too worried, though - if I follow through with this plan it would be a pure toy car, and probably wouldn't get much winter drive time. So general practicality is not a particular concern.

I have loved Mazdas for awhile now. They will keep runing for a very long time. All the new Mazda cars have very quick acceleration and great speed. Even the Mazda 3 has really good acceleration and speed. Not to mention the price is very good for a semi-luxury feel and sporty suspension. Turns are great.

Tesla is still the dream car, but there are two problems with it: First, the 100k+ price tag. Second, no availability for at least two years.
But so I stopped by the Porsche dealership on the way home today. What a contrast from the Saturn guy! Granted this guy only sells sports cars, so he has a major advantage, but still.
Took two cars out for a spin. The route was full of turns and angles, with plenty of room to move. The whole time the dealer was egging me on to go faster. At one point I was approaching a hairpin at about 50ish, and he tells me to not touch the brakes. I chicken out at the last moment. At his suggestion, we go back and do it over, this time at 60, no brakes.
I left with a giant grin on my face, instead of the grimace from the Saturn dealership. Granted the cars aren't a fair comparison, but what was really highlighted was the difference in presentation.

Don't forget either. That is the biggest problem...Sky is the first sports car Saturn ever tried to sell. These guys were trying to peddle sorta silly looking plastic cars for the last decade, where a speedy curve would roll the thing over. There is going to be a learning curve, give them a break.

You are of course welcome to your opinion, but that particular opinion makes no sense.
VWs are nice cars, but they are closely related to Audis and not Porsches. You would never mistake a Porsche for a VW after driving one - nor do they come with significant amounts of chrome.

My mom has a red Z4, and it is by far one of the best handling cars I've ever driven. It's light weight, rwd, 50/50 weight distribution, and has 3 beautiful inline 6's to choose from. A Monaco Blue/Black/Silver Z4 with sport package and a manual transmission is definitely NOT a chick car. Go try one out, you'll enjoy it.

the last moment. At his suggestion, we go back and do it over, this
time at 60, no brakes.
I left with a giant grin on my face, instead of the grimace from the
Saturn dealership. Granted the cars aren't a fair comparison, but what
was really highlighted was the difference in presentation. |
It seems like higher end dealerships are a lot cooler when it comes to test drives. You could walk into Porsche and BMW dealers all day long and get test drives, usually ALONE, but when you walk into a chevy dealer or a honda dealer, they wont let you test drive a regular corvette or a s2000.
Have you considered the BMW 335i? Coupe, sedan, hard top convertible? Vishnu offers a chip that bumps the WHP up to 360ish too for 1000 bucks.

You are of course welcome to your opinion, but that particular opinion makes no sense.
VWs are nice cars, but they are closely related to Audis and not Porsches. You would never mistake a Porsche for a VW after driving one - nor do they come with significant amounts of chrome. |
Just my opinion and i hate the things.Everything about them.
Much rather have a Maserati / Ferrari.

Has anyone mentioned a Lotus Elise? European flair FTW.
Kinda contradictory considering my musclecar preferences, but hey. Anyone can appreciate a nice exotic.

Don't forget either. That is the biggest problem...Sky is the first sports car Saturn ever tried to sell. These guys were trying to peddle sorta silly looking plastic cars for the last decade, where a speedy curve would roll the thing over. There is going to be a learning curve, give them a break. | Actually, you're wrong about them having a learning curve. GM has been making them for years in the European market. The Sky is just an American Opel Speedster/Vauxhaul VX220. Why they decided to go under the Saturn name? Don't ask me.
however, wait until they come out with the turbo model, if you do decide to get one. It should have around 200-220hp.

| In Japan, where they are legal. I think there's a company that sells US legal ones, but they cost $90k to import. Up for that? An Elise is 1/3 cheaper...

Uhh, I'm pretty sure Rambs isn't looking for a drifter or a muscle car.

Hey, have you looked at the Mini's at all? If you get the S model, I hear they're QUITE zippy... And I also understand they carry all the quality of their BMW manufacture from some owners I know.

Multi-response:
Definitely not looking for a muscle car or "drifter" - although any car, driven properly, is perfectly capable of drifting, of course.
As to the BMW 325/M3/M5, all AMG vehicles as well - Great cars, but I am looking for something more pure. I am not trading in my sedan, so I don't want to feel constrained by practicality limits (within reason, anyway). And then there are mileage concerns for the M/AMG cars as well.
Maserati - not a big fan of the body styling. The only Maserati I kind of like is the Quattroporte, but then I am back in sedan land.
Ferrari - seriously considered. Beautiful cars, and still the gold standard for +penis driving. But the mileage again becomes an issue, and maintenance as well. They really aren't meant to be driven that much, and I fully intend to drive my new toy a lot.
Venom - hadn't heard of it. Very interesting, and nice-looking. Still not quite the kind of car I am looking for, and the mileage will be unacceptable, I am sure (as well as the price).
Lotus - Next to the Tesla, the Lotus Elise is on paper the perfect car for me, and very much on the list. Main problem is that the nearest dealer is 2 hours away. This makes it harder to test drive, and will make maintenance/repair a concern as well. I may also discover that Lotus is too extreme - all reports are that they are not exactly comfortable. We shall see. I will definitely test one at first opportunity.
Quick note on Maybachs - I recently test-sat one (in the back, where the owner would sit). Very nice indeed. The special holder for the custom champagne flutes was a nice touch.

I looked at a 1984 Ferrari 308GTS once (Magnum PI to the core) and went with a Corvette instead because my mechanic told me the Ferrari would run $5,000 just for a tune-up... I'd end up paying for the car again just in maintenance if I kept it for 3 years...
Decided, with better performance stats anyway, that the 'Vette was the way to go.

That's kind of my analysis too. And even though the older Ferraris look great on the outside, the interiors look very dated, and I'm not really looking for a "classic" car at this point.
But hard to beat Corvettes for performance-per-dollar, regardless.

Lotus Elise is about as comfortable as being in a prison cell with a large horny black dude.
Check out a Ligenfelter Corvette.

If you plan on driving it alot, don't go for ferarri. It's one of those cars that you're so paranoid someone is going to scratch, spit on, scuff or otherwise that it winds up sitting at home looking pretty.
Just curious, how much money are you actually looking at dropping on a car.
And watch all the top gear you can, then pick something sexy from there. Maybe a Fiat Panda?
Again, saleen?

Grr.

They probably dont want some idiot killing themselves in it.
Anyway, I have always been a fan of the Mustangs. Im not the kind of person to ever drive THAT fast though.
