Havent had a giveaway on here for a while. So lets play a game!

The goal: Stump me on any mechanical or engineering question. The first person to do it wins a 1GB PNY USB2.0 memory stick thingy. The memory stick is thoughfully loaded with a bunch of old forum images, sigs, pictures, and other neat stuff. Sorry, no copyright-infringing goodies!

The rules for you: It has to be a vaguely mechanical or engineering question. No "Whats in my pockets", no "Who hit 5 home runs in the world series" stuff. Anything goes, use whatever resources you have, including the interwebs. As for math stuff, if you ask me to calculate some ungodly thing, and I can produce the formula to calculate it, I win. Sorry, Im not doing 3 hours of math to answer someones question.

The rules for me: Im disallowing myself from using google or any websites to look up answers. Obviously this is an honor-system thing, but anyone who doesnt trust me to play fair probably has issues with the 4 stars by my name. However, any other material goes for me, including books and asking people I know. Im also imposing a 1 day limit on any answer on my part, so if I cant answer a question in 24 hours time, that person wins. If I answer a question, and you know my answer is wrong and can prove it, you (The provee) win!

Have at it.

Cast aluminum is too porous. Or rather I should say, low-cost cast aluminum like the 98C body wont. An alloy with a higher concentration of aluminum would work better (But still difficult)

If I remember rightly:

One circulates water into the reactor itself, which boils into steam.

One circulates a seperate water circuit into the reactor, then uses a boiler to boil a seperate circuit of water to produce the steam.

Well, the only things that can affect speed are the propulsion force, the drag, and the force of gravity.

The easiest to alter would be gravity. Drop the angle of attack, and gravity is on your side, increasing the speed. Put it in a dive and go REALLY fast!

A variant of sonar. The camera issues an ultrasonic sound, and measures the time for the sound to bounce off whatever you happen to be aiming at. Some fancy math later, and the camera knows the distance to the target, more fancy math to determine the focal point.

Well, camera shutters come in a few different flavors, unless Im mistaken. You could have a diaphragm type shutter in the lens assembly, or blinds in the film compartment.

The purpose is the same though, to only allow light to strike the film for the perfect period of time, otherwise youd get a really crappy picture.

Very true, however, I did say modern, and the other method is more prevalent in top end cameras.

Describe the means by which professional camera flash units calculate the distance at which their intended target is, as well as how they focus the beam in order to achieve the desired light. Also, on the subject of lights, and a likely situation - What is the common means by which the master strobe communicates when to fire to the Slave strobe?

I think Christopher Lloyd was simply pronouncing the giga with a hard G sound, sounding like J.

Trying to catch up on some of these here. Stealth's uber-specific question is definately out of range of my personal knowledge, but Im sure I can find out.

Anyway, a boiler. Theres been quite a few different variants, but at its core a boiler needs 2 chambers, one to burn some combustible stuff like coal, and one to hold water to heat to steam.

The most effecient, the type used in steam locomotives at their peak, used a series of pipes running horizontally along the length of the boiler. The hot air and gasses from the firebox would go through these tubes on the way to the smokestack, and the water chamber that the tubes passed through meant the water had tons of surface area contacting the "heat", making for very effecient boiling.

Its a ridiculously complicated measurement for pumping liquids. According to my bible, its basically how much stuff your pump can pump, factoring in damn near everything someone could think of. Atmospheric pressure, specific gravity of the fluid, specs of your pump, and how high you want to pump the stuff.

The hole in the reciever? I asked the same question, mainly when I plugged the thing up and it didnt work.

It lets the air trapped between the hammer and the valve out, otherwise its like an air shock absorber, the hammer wont hit the valve correctly.

He's probably calling up friends constantly or cheating, but I don't think he would cheat.

If I recall correctly, Enos is supposed to answer the questions.

Indeed he is. If enos doesn't think this is an "engineering" question, I will answer.

Going by memory here. A reaction turbine in essence uses thrust, some type of propulsion is expelled from the turbine itself, equal and opposite reaction and all that and the thing spins.

An impulse turbine, the propulsive force is directed at the vanes of the turbine, pushing on it and causing it to turn.

2:  Explain the theory-of-operation of a Stirling-cycle engine.

Which configuration, alpha beta or gamma? Just kidding. I love stirling engines.

Air in a chamber is totally sealed up, a heat source is applied to one side heating the air in the chamber. As air heats, it expands, so it pushes on a piston that starts a crankshaft moving. The crankshaft also drives another larger piston called a displacer that squeezes the air from the "hot" end of the chamber to a "cold" end, where the heat is drawn off of the air, cooling it. Since air contracts when it cools, it sucks the piston back in. Repeat ad infinitum.

3:  Explain the ToO of a Tesla Coil (for funzies)

I love these things too. One day I want to build one.

Anyway, in essence a tesla coil is a high-frequency transformer that takes advantage of resonance to achieve enormous voltage. The primary side of the transformer is cycling at a frequency that when it induces a current in the secondary, they amplify each other like if you gave someone a huge push on a swing every time they swang back twords you. Tesla was a genius about resonance, alot of his stuff has still never been scientifically studied.

4:  What is a pulsejet and how does it work?

If I remember rightly, a pulse jet sucks in air, mixes it with fuel, then seals the intake before ignition and releases the exploding gasses.

5:  What is a Rhombic drive used for?

Its a mechanical linkage to convert push-pull motion into rotary motion. Bunch of levers, neat to watch it run.

Porting,polishing, MSD ignition?

bad. polishing to a fine enough finish is actually bad ecspecially for carburated aplications, the slight imperfections in the metal helps keep the fuel particles suspended in the air fuel mixture.

and as for preformance parts, heads, exhaust, stroking are the best 3 ways. exhaust probly suprises many of you, but if you cant get rid of those excess gasses, your not gunna run right...

actually:

3 first most basic upgrades on a car would be:  ECU upgrade, Up-pipe, and a Downpipe, for modern applications, however, this question is too general, seeing as certain upgrades can do different amounts of effect depending on the car.

But the three most maximum upgrades?  Engine swap, tranny swap, suspension work.  I think i just beat you at your own game.

Cast aluminum is too porous. Or rather I should say, low-cost cast aluminum like the 98C body wont. An alloy with a higher concentration of aluminum would work better (But still difficult)

Because the alloy Tippmann uses contains iron in it. If you try to anodize anything with iron in it, it will instantly rust and ruin the entire electrolyte solution.
