Not even joking. I played a game today, and got all buddy-buddy with one of the older regulars at the field. We got to talking, and, as he was on a scenario team, started telling good bushball stories. Some how or another, we started discussing strategies, and the subject of sniping came up. We shared agreement that being all sneaky and such is definately not our style of play, but he told me there was a scenario-runner-group-thingy (like MXS) that did have sniping. Now follow along, this is where it gets cool:

You can snipe, never make a sound, and make an elimination up to 300 feet away, perfectly straight. Heck, you don't even have to fire a shot! What it is, is a sniper character gets sniper cards, and those are like his ammo. When he finds a target, probably a high value target like a general or what have you, the sniper calls in the referee (via walkie-talkie or something like that) and points out the target to the ref. The ref then declares the target sniped and eliminated, and the sniper, now effectively out of the range of return fire, can slink off unseen and look for another kill.

IT WORKS! I wish I'd have thought of it when I was a newb. I'd have killed for that position.

Yeah, but that would only work for fields with alot of refs such as only a few large scenarios.

It is a pretty cool idea though. Im intrigued.

Well, it was originated for large scenario events. I wonder what would happen if I posted this on the SpecOps forum...

So your not really sniping, so there really isn't "sniping" in paintball only roll playing.

But yeah. Kinda. You are fulfilling the exact same role as a sniper. Arguments?

Wait, so now we're eliminating people just by pointing at them?

You mean i spent all that money on markers for nothing?

Okay, I can counter that arguement too. It's simple really, the sniper (not in quotes this time 'cuz it's legit) probably has limited "rounds," if you will. It's not like he can go through the entire game like that. Plus, it's just one guy...

...but still.  It's the whole concept of eliminating someone by pointing at them.  Might as well be a Wizard.

I understand the concept, i'm just playing devil's advocate here.  ...But i would be really confused/pissed if i was called out by being pointed at.

That has to be really boring though. I mean, its not fun camping either, but lineing up someone in your crosshairs, then firing and getting a goggle hit from 400 feet is a great feeling. Unline saying "Hey ref, that guy in the ghillie is out".

It's a good idea, but the target should have some line of defense.

For instance, say the sniper points at the opposing team's general. The ref would then contact the general and inform him that he has been targeted. The ref would have dice or something that the general and sniper would roll. In order to evade the shot, the general would have to roll higher than the sniper. If he rolls lower, he's out.

Sure, it sounds like like D&D, but it's the best way of making it fair for all of the players.

How about giving the sniper a laser pointer that he needs to hold on the target while he calls the target to the ref, so if when he says "bang" over the radio, if the ref does not see the dot on the target, it is a miss. This has limitations like a need for much reffing and radios(probably with an earpiece even for refs, so your target doesn't hear you calling your shot on him. Snipers should only be able to take one shot per mission and rely on their actual marker for everything else.

Still, the 1337 p8ntbl snip0rz won't like this at all

This is unbelievable.

Next thing you know they will just video the game and you can play sniper from your couch.

You can phone in your sniper shots and the ref will use a 20 sided D&D die to roll whether or not you get your kill.

That sounds like some fun "paintball"

Okay, I can see the naysayers point, but someone's being a little closed-minded! :P

The sniper position has limited use. The character has to get to the HVT without being seen, has a paintball gun for defense or what-have-you, has to call in the shot (of which I'm sure there's more to it than that, such as line of site rules), the player is out, the sniper sneaks out and resumes his normal paintball duties until the general calls in another mission. He can probably do this like 5 times in a scenario, it's not a permanent position.

Just make your self a card and hand it to the Ref write on it "Neo the Chosen ONE" and tell him you dodged that sniper shot. As he's on the radio with MXS slip away.

Seriously.

I play paintball specifically to get away from this "bang-bang, you are dead" crap.

Wipers aside, paintballs provide a nice way of keeping track of hits, and adds a little agony of defeat to the exercise.  Kills by pointing at each other?  Hell no.

I don't know why everyone is freaking out. It's for a major scenario series, the players are told about the positions. They are fully aware of the position and it's capabilities. It's not like it's all encompassing...

I was playing woodsball in Mine and my friends feild yesterday. It was a nice 8-8 Game and we have some place set up on High Ground on a hill that over looks the main playing feild where everybody goes. Not many people go to the high ground spot because it is a nice little 70 degree climb. When the game started i was put on a team with a bunch of retards and they All Grouped like 3 feet away from eachother and would not move. I got the idea to go up to the high ground. Just as i was getting there i looked down and i seen my group of guys getting circled. Because i had clear veiw of them and the guys surronding them i started to ''SNIPE'' off the team. They had no idea where the shots were coming from. I managed to get 4 kills befor some douche on my team pointed at me and yelled HELP US! Then i just got rushed and lit up. Thats my story

Bump for update!

I refereed for the said scenario organizer last weekend (Viper Paintball), and this system works! Each general gets money (not real money) for completed missions. And with this money, he can buy special benefits, like air strikes and snipers. What happens is the general purchases a sniper card, gives the card to the player, and the player can now use it to get a single elimination on any person in his line of sight, confirmed by a referee. Example: I'm just chilling, watching what's going on, and I get called over.

"Hey ref!"
"Yeah?"
"See that guy sticking out over there, behind that bunker?"
"Which one?"
"The one with the Double-Trouble A-5, keeping our lines back [true story]."
"Oh yeah."
*player hands me sniper card*
"He's sniped."
"K."
*I call nearest ref over to A-5 guy, or run over there myself to call player out. A-5 guy is confused, then upset, but resigned to his fate*

It works. I had to do that a lot...

This takes all of the skill out of sniping though.  Handing a ref a card and pointing to someone doesn't require adjustments for distance, windage, elevation, or any of the stuff that we have to adjust for in real life.  While yes, I can see how it could be useful in big scenario games, it just seems cheap.

And as a military man, I'm sure you can understand how handing a card is about as close as we can get in the game of paintball.

Right, but can we make them go through some sort of "Card-sniper" courses first? To teach them some basic sniping tactics, rather than just "Hey, here's this card, all you have to do it show a ref who you want killed, and we'll remove him from the game for you"

I'm sure there's room for the cards to be tweaked. But to be honest, when I reffed the game, people seemed happy with the way things were. While it may take some of the "feel" out of sniping, I say don't fix what ain't broken.

Plus it was fun when both sides met each other in the center speedball field. Sniper cards flying left and right! I've never seen mass sniper war.

I've been hit with a sniper card before.. well not exactly sniper but and RPG card... It was at the Battle of the Bulge at Skirmish, the group I was with just had been reinserted after the 20 minute wait. After we stepped back on the field a Ref came up to all of us and told us a RPG had exploded here and we were all dead. So another 20 minute wait till we could get back into the game good times.

...

I don't know how many times I'm going to have to say this. They cost the general game money, and they ain't cheap. Some people are blowing this entirely out of proportion. It's not like everyone has like 10 cards. When I said "mass sniper warfare," I meant there were like 6 or 7 calls. Out of like 20 on each side (the rest of each team was off in the woods somewhere). Saying people shouldn't even bring their markers is 3x as "silly" as these cards...

While this may put "snipers" in paintball, it doesn't create "paintball snipers."  After all, paintballs aren't even part of the elimination process.

Maybe the general should be allowed to pay higher prices for more powerful "snipers" as well.

If I could snipe and always get an elimination just by informing a ref, why would I need a marker?  Who would want to go out on the field with a marker only to be eliminated because somebody waved a ref over to give him a card?  "I saw him, here's his card."  We'd be better off playing a game of children's tag.  When you take paintball out of the equation, it isn't paintball anymore.

Once again, you are completely missing what's going on here. It's not like everyone has a sniper card they can use infinitely. Each card is good for 1 elimination, and each card is expensive. You can't just constantly "point and click" and get everyone out. 1 ELIMINATION ONLY.

Your analogy is way too exaggerated.

Well, there is an air strike card (not sarcasm).

Okay. You're in a bunker. The bunker was hit with a LAW. You're caught in the blast. You're out. Not much different; you weren't hit by a paintball...

Look, this is one of those "don't knock it until you try it" things. I can understand how it doesn't sound appealing, but it actually works out quite well when applied.

F-- on this idea.

I swear, if I showed up to a game and this was enacted, I'd go home. Why in the hell should some dude dressed in a bush suit be able to get me out just by looking at me? When I see opponents from concealed positions all the time and can't do anything about it because they're out of range?

Crap on this. It's absolutely ridiculous. We're amending the rules of the game to pander to video-induced conceptions of awesomeness that these kids have of the game and combat simulations.

I think I'll sell all my markers, buy a ghillie and a deck of tarot cards, and I can be the most successful paintball player out there.....or....would I not be a paintball player anymore?

I still hate it, because....even if you're a general, what paintball player stays in one place long enough for the 'sniper' to call the referee, who walks over and tags the guy? What's to say that this 'sniper' doesn't cheat and radio the ref and say 'Yeah, uh, I sniped the general, but he moved from where he was before you got there.....I swear I got him though' while in reality, super-camper never saw the general at all.
