When I read the article I thought it was a stinger missle, but it looks more like a tow. So does anyone have a theory as to how this missle ended up in a shed???

Thats what I said to someone earlier.  Build a mock up of a SCUD missile launcher and roll up in it.

No theories... but that definitely doesn't look like a shoulder-launched SAM. I'm in the same train of thought as you in that it's an Anti-Tank round of some sorts. And it doesn't look like a full launcher... just the storage tube.
I'll be interested in hearing more info on it.

And I can't believe that people would turn in stuff like a Springfield M1A!!! For something like $50 in Shoe Money.   I hope like hell that Orlando Police at least traces the serial to check if it was stolen, and makes an attempt to contact the rightful owner before taking a torch to it!
I'm sorry, but no one trades in a M1A for a $50 shoe certificate. No one.

Posted By: SSOK
Date Posted: 19 August 2007 at 6:48pm

I wouldn't trade it in.

Heck, if I wanted to get rid of it, I would hang it in a basement or turn it into a sick paintball anti-tank weapon.

Why's that unreasonable?
One of my friend's uncle's is one crazy mo (has actually been institutionalized once), and he used to be in the Army. Well, I have (according to him) only seen a small chunk of what he has, and I have personally held his RPG, full-auto M-16, semi-auto m-14, and have seen 2 flashbangs, lots of smoke grenades, and a frag.
The crazy thing is that this guy is also one of the most hardcore racists I've ever met, and claims that he will assassinate the first black president... and he actually has the weaponry to possibly pull it off, even though he'd probably be too drunk and miss or something (alcoholic also).

Oh and yeah... People are dumb. At least sell it to a pawn-broker or something. Guns are worth more than shoes.

And why destroy the guns that are turned in anyways? Guns ARE still legal in Florida, aren't they?

Most all the guns turned into Kicks For Guns are illegal or unwanted. People don't want to pawn them off where they might be used for another crime. They know by giving them to KFG, they will be destroyed.

They are destroyed because, like it said, most all of them are illegal street guns.

Doubt it. If the guy has all this other stuff, why have fake grenades? It seems like they'd be way easier to steal/smuggle than an RPG.
I actually got to hold most of the stuff, and I'm fairly certain it was all real (except maybe the F/B's since I've never seen one other than that).

If you unscrew the charged part of the grenade you can see inside, that would be how to check to see if their live.

Ah. Makes sense, but it still seems like a waste of good guns to not just put them back into legitimate trade. It's not like the gun has any recollection of crimes committed, or a tendency to repeat them...

Or they could just give them to me for safe-keeping... I promise I won't play with the SAM. :p

Well, I can only say from listening to the live coverage of KFG done on the radio stations that host it, and have hosted it for the past few years, but a large majority of the people who go to KFG are teens who found the gun or who's parents didn't know they had it, or are people who's friends asked them to "hold onto it," and they think it was used in a crime.

They get a lot of illegal weapons, either by design (automatic uzi's and tech 9's) or modification (sawed off shotguns, pistols with serials filed off).

They are just part of the surplus firearm problem. All guns start off life as legit, but almost always the ones being turned in are going to be ones that will cause a problem.

I definately see your point. It does suck to destroy some great guns though (the M1a is a case in point), and it seems like criminals could just use that as a way to anonymously dispose of a murder weapon.

I wonder how that would go over in Detroit or Flint...

Yeah, the rare M1 is a oddity for sure. I think this is the first year they have gotten anything collectible like that.

And yeah, I am pretty sure criminals have used it to get rid of a murder weapon, but I think in this situation the ability to cause a greater good outweighs the bad.

Well... back to original topic... not meaning to disappoint anyone... but CarbineKid and I called it.

It was an EMPTY storage tube for a TOW missile. Which is an anti-tank round fired from a vehicle or helicopter, not a shoulder-launched surface-to-air missile as the media stated to get their ratings up.

Of Course the Media will say its a SAM. Just think. Orlando has a nice little Airport families use to take their children to Disney when its not easy to drive there. Nice little way to say, look if one man has a SAM, then many people could have one, and we could be looking at a huge problem for the airlines. If I was a betting man like Tim Donaghy then I would say thats where the media would have taken this story if it was a live SAM.

Gun buy-back programs around here make me want to cry. It's usually little old widows turning in their husband's collection of valuable guns. We had a very broken(read that run-away full auto) .22 that my grandpa turned in. I saw a lot of winchester model 12's, a few Springfield 03's , some sporterised, many S&W's that were custom tuned and engraved, a chinese SKS missing parts, and a bb gun that the cop thought was real, until my grandfather figured out what it was. Fortunatly I know some of the more collectable guns find good homes in some programs.

Go to walmart and buy a bunch of assorted pellet guns for $30.  Trade them in for $50.

Win.
