I know we've done this before, with the sad songs threads, etc, but I'm doing another.

For me, it's Right Where It Belongs, by Nine Inch Nails.
I think part of it is that I saw it in concert, where they lower a HUGE screen that conceals the entire stage and play a movie on it while they perform the song. You can see the visuals with the song http://youtube.com/watch?v=rXtiGeOs3K8 - here.

That's actually Right Where It Belongs V2, but the lyrics are the same as the other version.

Either way, the song always strikes a chord with me, and can hit me alot harder than almost any other song. How about you?

*edit*
From that youtube link you can also find live versions, where it shows concert footage of the song. I'd also recommend that, it can be even more touching with all the people there. When I was there, nearly every person in the place was singing along.

I like that song too. She has an incredible voice.

For me the song is "Matador" by Semisonic. The song wasn't a single, so there was no video or anything for it, so unfortunately, no links of the song.

The song is about the end of summer, and perhaps of your youth and innocence itself. It has this beautiful melancholy feel to it, without being cheesy.

Diggin' holes - Start Trouble

I'd be surprised if anybody here knows who they are.

Edit: Lyrics

Not much to do around this town till i met you
It used to be the days would pass so quickly
Now time stands still
Every week we'd chill and watch mtv
Packing bowl after bowl
No self control
Then we'd feel each other up and one thing would lead to another
(chorus)
I made so many mistakes that my body aches
This life aint easy
keep diggin' holes let the drama unfold
keep thinkin' you gon' leave me like that
baby i fought back believe me its not like you need me
keep diggin' holes let the drama unfold
keep thinkin' you gon' leave me
Can't blame each other for this mess
You can't blame the pill now time stands still
and every moment that was ours is now the pounding of our hearts
and I can't breathe I'm Claustrophobic now
I saw you out at regency and you didn't notice me
(chorus)
I made so many mistakes that my body aches
This life aint easy
keep diggin' holes let the drama unfold
keep thinkin' you gon' leave me like that
baby i fought back believe me its not like you need me
keep diggin' holes let the drama unfold
keep thinkin' you gon' leave me
And i remember the sky when we were both so high
And nothing else mattered
I remember your sign the same as mine electric flow scorpios
If i could take it back right now i wish that i had never met you
I dont believe in love but something there was real
(chorus)
I made so many mistakes that my body aches
This life aint easy
keep diggin' holes let the drama unfold
keep thinkin' you gon' leave me like that
baby i fought back believe me its not like you need me
keep diggin' holes let the drama unfold
keep thinkin' you gon' leave me

Ooh, thats a good call. And since you posted lyrics, here comes Right Where It Belongs:

See the animal in his cage that you built,
Are you sure what side you're on?
Better not look him too closely in the eye,
Are you sure what side of the glass you are on?
See the safety of the life you have built,
Everything where it belongs
Feel the hollowness inside of your heart,
And it's all... right where it belongs

What if everything around you,
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks,
Would you find yourself... find yourself afraid to see?

What if all the world's inside of your head?
Just creations of your own
Your devils and your gods all the living and the dead
And you're really all alone
You can live in this illusion,
You can choose to believe.
You keep looking but you can't find the woods,
While you're hiding in the trees

What if everything around you,
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you used to know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is that all you want to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks,
Would you find yourself... find yourself afraid to see?

This song just came on and reminded me of it. Pretty much reminded me of my friend who just broke up and then found someone on the interwebs who made her happy.(How dumb?) From like last year.

Wicked long song.

Streetlight Manifesto-A Better Place, A Better Time

So she wakes up
in time to break down
She left a note up on the dresser
and she's right on time
You don't know anything
right or wrong
I said I know
and she said so
I want to panic
but I've had it
so I go
you don't owe anything to anyone

But don't take your life
because it's all that you've got
you'd be better off just up and leaving
if you don't think they will stop

And when you wake up
everything is going to be fine
I guarantee that you wake up in a better place
in a better time
so you're tired of living
and you feel like you might give in
well don't
it's not your time

looking through the paper today
looking for a specific page
don't want to find her full name followed by dates
because when I left her alone
she made a sound, like a moan
"you're known by everyone for everything you've done"
buying flowers for graves
I'd rather buy you a one way non-stop
to anywhere
find anyone
do anything
forget and start again, love
she said she won't go
and that's that
it hurts too much to stand by
you've got to stop and draw a line
and everyone here has to choose a side tonight
the moment of truth is haunting you
don't forget your family
regardless of what you choose to do
you can't decide
and they're all screaming "why won't you?"
I'll start the engine but I can't take this ride for you
I'll draw your bath and I'll load your gun
but I hope so bad that you'll bathe and hunt

Annie's tired of forgetting about today and always planning for tomorrow (tomorrow)
Annie says "The saddest day I came across was when I learned that life goes on without me" (without me)
Annie says "If everyone has someone else, then I ain't got nobody's love to save me" (save me)
Annie says "I think I'll pass away tonight, because it seems I'll never get it right if it's just me" (just me)
Annie says!

And when you wake up
everything is going to be fine
I guarantee that you wake up in a better place
and in a better time
so you're tired of living
and you feel like you might give in
well don't
it's not your time

Annie says she wouldn't mind if they never find a cure for all her problems (her problems)
Annie says as long as she has someone near to make it clear she does not need to solve them (solve them)
Annie says "oh, this loneliness is killing me it's filling me with anger and resentment (resentment)"
Annie says "I'm turning into someone that I never thought I'd have to be again"

And when you wake up
everything is going to be fine
I guarantee that you wake up in a better place
and in a better time
so you're tired of living
and you feel like you might give in
well don't
it's not your time

Annie's tired of forgetting about today and always planning for tomorrow (tomorrow)

everything is going to be fine
I guarantee that you wake up in a better place
and in a better time
so you're tired of living
and you feel like you might give in
well don't
it's not your time

and even if it was
I wouldn't let you go
you could run run run run but I will follow close
someday you will say "that's it, that's all"
but I'll be waiting there with open arms to break your fall
I know that you think that you're on your own
but just know that I'm here
and I'll lead you home
if you let me
she said "forget me"
but I can't

I was never a big music fan until high school and No Doubt caught me at just the right time in my life, 1995. I had heard a bit of their stuff but wasn't too interested. Then I heard Don't Speak at just the right moment and was hooked. I became a huge fan of just about everything they did from their start until now.

On their last album they had this song, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-MNtN84NYk - Running , and when I saw it in concert it was the first time I'd seen the film with it. At the time it wasn't certain there was going to be another album, and my own interest had been waning some. All the images of times gone past struck something with me and now every time I hear it it gets to me.

Other songs, songs I don't even like, get to me because of the time and place they take me back to.
Fly by Sugar Ray puts such vivid images of rock climbing with my friends at the climbing gym at a very odd time in my life. I can see their faces, feel the wall, and smell the chalk.
Just about anything by Cake lets me perfectly visualize driving around with my friend Rob late at night after work, and what a perfect time of life that was.
Sublime recalls very clear memories of the end of the times when a couple of friends lived close and we'd sit around just talking for hours on end. The only times that some of us really connected.

The original lyrics were quite different from the ones that were released. She and Tony Kanal went through the break-up that fueled that album around that time and she rewrote it into what it is became.

Alternate version -

I can see it all in an eyeblink
I know everything about how you are
I can understand exactly how you think
Between you and me it's not very far
Side by side, you and I
With many many years behind us
You let words pass us by
Because we're always together
And we will be forever
Such a special treasure, you and I

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
It's nothing new that I've heard

No need to tell me you’re my best friend
‘Coz you did watch, you know who you are
Side by side, you and I
Like the birds that that sing at the ocean
Something as deep as you and I
We will be together married
And we will be forever
Such a special treasure, you and I

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
It's nothing new that I've heard

I was so glad I knew ya
I was just too shy
After words to deep to lie
It’s just that they were so amazing
So let us both stop pretending who we are.

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
It's nothing new that I've heard
And don't speak
I know what you're saying
So please stop explaining
It's nothing new that I've heard

And I can see it all in an eyeblink
And don't you think that you're being hurt
Because I know it....

Music is a VERY strong memory catalyst. Psychologists say it's second only to smell. What you were saying made me remember how vividly I recall the fall of 1999-spring2000 when I listen to Cake's Fashion Nugget album.

Another song that really does it for me is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4lufi-Y0UA - I Feel Home by OAR. A friend of mine is a guitarist for a local band that I go watch sometimes when my band isn't playing out. At the end of the night, after the rest of the band has left the stage, sometimes he picks up his guitar and sings the OAR song by himself. It's a pretty cool song.

Muse - Starlight
Reminds me of when I saw them live not that long ago with my girlfriend and things just felt 'right'

Smashing Pumpkins - 1979
Reminds me of my friends from high school that I used to talk to.

Along with

Jet - Cold Hard <poopy>

The Verve Pipe - The Freshmen
reminds me of one of my good friends that we used to listen to this song religiously and just takes me back to hanging out with him everyday in high school.

I always get a little melancholy when Suicide Is Painless (Johnny Mandel (music) and Mike Altman (lyrics)) comes on my iPod.
It's the M*A*S*H song, but before they took the lyrics out for TV.

Wonderful, by Everclear- parents' divorce.
Chicane- No Ordinary Morning; breakup.
Blue October- Hate Me; breakup.
The Calling- Wherever you will go; an old friend that I rather miss
Aerosmith- Don't wanna miss a thing; 'our' song from when that same old friend was my gf.
Staind- Zoe Jane; it just does
Something Corporate- Konstantine; it just gets to me.
Savage Garden- Two Beds And A Coffee Machine; parents' divorce, as my mom, brother and I drove off halfway across the country.
Eagle Eye Cherry- Save Tonight; I've had to leave often enough that this one gets to me.
Harry Chapni- Cat's In TheCradle; conflict between my dad and I
Linkin Park- Numb; same

That's most of the major ones... I connect with a lot of songs.

Now That I Know - Devendra Banhart

It's just a really sad song, but it hits me hard because I can relate to it so much.  That and one day I was tripping on acid in my room and when this song came on, I felt a good part of who I am leave my body and vanish before my eyes.
