Sad. I hope he gets the help he needs, I always liked his acting.

Saw that on Drudge this morning. Hard to believe, he's such a down to earth actor. Hope he doesn't pull a Chris Farley.

The guy has the world, and then tries to end it all. I have NO sympathy for him.

Depressed and suicidal are two different things. The guy has a great job that makes millions, he can get any girl he wants, and unlike the rest of us lives on easy street. Yeah he has alot to be "depressed" about. I doubt he could make it in the real world.

Methinks you don't understand the nature of depression, CK...  money for nothing and chicks for free has little to do with it.

And the red message was Sandman chastising oreomann for flaming you.

Actually, a common feature of depression is the "I have it worse than other people, and nobody understands me" feeling.  It is quite common for depression sufferers to have little sympathy for other depressed people, specifically because their own depression won't allow them to acknowledge that other people might also have problems - particularly other people that don't share your particular problems.

Depression strikes high and low, but most depressed people share this strange depression elitism, where their depression is somehow more valid than that of other people.

So money guarantees hapiness?  it's not a problem that's solved with $$, in fact it can exacerbate the problem for some people.

Well. If I had a lot of money I'd be considerably happier.

Having plenty of money eliminates financial worries, a huge stress. Stress causes depression.

I really want a boat.

I personally see Carbine's point...

It's not to say that the rich and famous don't or can't have problems... Just that they have all the tools they need to go about resolving their problems through less juvenille means.

I agree, as I have seen firsthand, that depression has little to do with the objective "quality" of one's life... Their financial resources, their career success, etc... It has a lot more to do with whether one's life truly satisfies them.

But here's the kicker... If your life makes you depressed, it's up to YOU to find your way out of that depression. Sure, you can seek help through many external means (money being the enabler in this regard), but ultimately the person themselves has to find a way to emerge from their own depression.

I don't have any sympathy either. Life is hard. If you're unhappy or depressed, find a way to climb out of it. Especially if you have a great deal of resources, there's no excuse for wallowing in it.

I frequently have the problem while depressed that I don't feel that I'm worth helping. I have the resources, including EAP, medicine, and a pretty good support system, but I can't seem to regard myself highly enough to be worth saving.
I do get by, and I am responsible for making sure I do all I can to ward off the worst of it, including getting help when I need it and taking my medicine regularly, but every now and again it is sudden and overwhelming.
I hope he does get help because he is certainly able, if only he'll find it in him to save himself.

Hard to disagree with that.

But while financial issues is a common source of depression for those without loads of money, I do seem to recall that lottery winners disproportionately suffer from depression as well.

I dont think it was the money that was depressing him but rather the movie roles he has been offered lately.

I have a certain amount of pity reserved for those who want to take their own lives-but it only goes as far as their ability to deal with it. I dealt with extreme depression for a long time a few years back, and I can say from experience that there's always a way out that doesn't involve taking your own life.

Of course, I've always been a believer that if somebody wants to kill themselves, they generally succeed. People that do things like this are usually trying to send a message more than end their life.

On the subject of excess money sometimes being a source of depression:

If anyone is suffering from this, I'll be glad to help ease the burden.

Edited Note:  Because I care.
