I've been talking to a friend about getting a marker(he currently has a tippmann custom 98, but is going to buy a smart parts epiphony) and he has recomended the tippmann A5 to me because of how upgradeable it is, and its reliability. I was kinda leaning towards a speedball gun because of rate of fire, but he told me that with and E-grip, and a battery operated hopper, i could get almost a speedball rate of fire, with the tippmann price and reliabilty. How accurate is this?

ROF: electropnuematic > A-5 w/ e-grip

Size (smallest): electropnuematic > A-5 w/ e-grip

Weight: electropnuematic > A-5 w/ e-grip

Durability: electropnuematic = a-5 w/ e-grip
(both guns if maintained properly should have little risk of breaking down, 90% of problems w/ a paintball gun are user error).

Cost: electropnuematic - a-5 w/ e-grip

Value ("bang for your buck"): electropnuematic > a-5 w/ e-grip

Now that being said what should you get... generally I recommend Freestyles, or Promasters since they don't have good resale value... so you can find them used, at a low price (althought they are excellent markers,... which surpass anything Smart Parts makes).

However right now online retailers (specifically ANS and Actionvillage.com) are clearing out WGP markers (WGP is going to introduce a line of guns)... so your best bet is to buy a new WGP marker.

Mechanical = 04 Prostock
Electropnuematic = Superstock Select Fire ($165), Black Magic on ANS website ($?)

Also... Actionvillage is auctioning off Karnivor autocockers on ebay for around $400.

How much can you spend?

Because if you go electro you are going to need a decent hopper and HPA (Around $200-250 together). But if you can afford it, electro is the way to go.

well, i'm probably gonna wait till around christmas and my birthday(3 weeks apart) so by then, (and depending how serious i get into paintballing between now and then) i may be willing to spend up to around 300-350 on the gun+necesarry upgrades

also, is the tippmann triumph line any good, or are they junk?

I would just stick with a 98/A5 over a triumph.

But if your going to wait, ask around about borrowing your friend's guns.  That way, you wont have to buy something, then sell it when you want something new.

Or, get a cheap $20 re-manufactured gun, then save it for a loaner when you get a nicer gun.

You can get re-manufactured Tippmanns online. You should be able to find them at ActionVillage.com

if you are looking for rate of fire, the a-5 should be good enough, buy the e-grip and the vortex/lightning rod upgrade for your cyclone and you can max out round 30 bps(auto) so really it will be a question of what do you really want to do after the game is over? make sure your speedball gun can be used again just to find out you cant fix a problem.... or take your a-5 apart clean it, put it back together and play another day.

Guns dont break on their own.  If you break it, more than likely its your fault.  Most electronic guns are very simple to take care of except if you get down to the board/wiring.  Even then you shouldnt be tampering with the electronics during games.

QFT.

Most electronic markers are extremely easy to care for. Most only need a simple wipe-down and lube after every day of play to keep running, which takes about 2 minutes. And taking apart most electro markers is alot easier than taking apart an A-5.

I just actually read the thread title... speedball guns and semi-autos are not 2 different types of markers.

"Speedball markers"... or shall I say electropnuematic markers (since that is what you are refering to) can be fired in semi automatic mode (some only have semi), but also might have various firing modes and settings. In comparison to mechanical markers they are generally superior.

In my opinion, it all comes down to what you like and what you play. I wouldn't buy a Tippmann for Speedball. Tippmann's aren't built from the ground up as Speedball markers, though you can mod them to become par with some of the medium-end electro's. Just think about the type of game you're going to be playing. There's nothing worse than buying a marker for one specific style of paintball and then realizing you don't like it.

see, i would probably play more woodsball type, guess i will just have to play more and see, but i do like the optional firing modes provided with an Etrigger. just dont know if it would be worth it as apposed to a double trigger and response trigger
