Only applicable to HPA.

A gauge would show you the amount of pressure in the tank.  However*,  because CO2 is a temperature sensitive liquid that evaporates into a gaseous form inside the tank before it can be used to power the marker, the pressure reading would not necessarily be indicative of the amount of propellant left in the tank.

Edited Note:Explanation seriously over-simplified because I didn't feel like doing a lot of typing.

*There's always a "however."

Get an accurate electric scale, empty your tank completely, so that you can physically depress the pin-valve and no air comes out. Weigh the tank, record the number. Take the tank to get filled, weight the tank again, subtract your original (tare) weight from the filled weight and voila! You have how much CO2 is in the tank by weight, which is how they're filled.

I use an electronic fish scale.  I've weighed/labeled my tanks empty, so this gives me an idea of how much CO2 is in a tank if I can't remember whether I've used it since the last refill.
