I haven't mentioned it before, but there is one type of player that annoys me even more than the Spec-op "snipers"; the Spec-op "Commanders." I found the following on their forum:
Spec-ops Lt. wrote:
. . . my team is
not even really a team . . . . we were as unorganized as it got . . . . our "practices" weren't practices . . . . Just becuase I'm not officialy a
Commander anymore doesn't mean I don't take charge during those walkon
games.* |
*Bold added for emphasis.
What makes this individual think the walk-ons would follow his directions as opposed to telling him to get bent.
Other info: I visited the team http://www.freewebs.com/ace-14/teamroster.htm - web site ; the team consisted of nine people. Position assignments showed one commander, 4 snipers, three question marks and one blank.

We have some people on walkon games that try to command.
Nobody listens to them at all.
They generally give bad advice.
Commanding before the game in woodsball is often useless in my experiences.
During the game though, I often take a leadership role to tell newer players to move up .

Not commenting on what he wrote, just what you did.
Whenever I go to the field I take charge of my team, and they mainly listen for a few reasons.
1) I know and am friends with the refs and they see us joking around all the time, there by showing I am a regular there and probably know my way around.
2) I play with a pump, and according to a lot of people, pump players are either "stupid broke noobs" or "Gods of the sport"... it tends to be the latter for me.
3) When you have your own cult following on the internet because of a video of you playing and doing decently... people tend to listen.
and finally
4) Just the mere fact that someone is willing to take charge, people end up listening.

the most i ever do in regards of "taking charge" is i ask where everyones going and mention that everyone shouldnt go to the tank just because it can hold them all...esp. when the "tank" has two hugely exposed sides. plus i hate being in clusters
edit-linus has a point. a lot of newbs walking on dont really know better yet than to do their own thing and figure other guys have more experience

Good to see both of you missed the point.
I never said I was a god... I said pump players are often viewed as either poor noobs or as fantastic players.
Doubt it? Get a pump and go to a field.

That's the only thing that anoys me about Pump Players. They are always into their Motif more than the wannabe snipers.
I have owned pumps and true its fun to play even at times its an adrnaline rush. But this whole zen like talk of keeping it real and going old school and skill of each shoot its just turns to blah blah I love myself.
I dont think I ever judged anyone by their equipment. I think I learn move by how they move off the whistle than by any fancy stock class pump.

lol i like when little kids follow me around because of my autococker. one rec game i had like a little army of 3 little kids, it wasnt even like a fps anymore, more like playing a RTS. 1. little kids will always follow around those who look like they know what they are doing, 2. if a little kid want to tag along they either listen or i do a suicide rush and they wont follow me, 3. Pump users are not snipers, the only reason they get 1 shot kills is because theres no way to overshoot when shooting so slowy, and lastly, and most importantly. WHY DO WE KEEP BRINGING SNIPERS UP WHEN WE ALL AGREE THAT THEY DONT EXIST IN PAINTBALL???? it deosnt matter what some milsimer thinks, just pwn them and make them learn, dont try to reason with someone, people never listen, ever.

I never claimed I was old school. Not one single time.
I never said I was a god at the sport either.
I simply said that pump players, in my experiences are either viewed as:
poor, stupid, noobish
OR
They kick butt
Whenever I go to a field, I get one of those 2 responses from ANYONE who has never seen me before.
The reason why we laugh at semi players like you is for the exact thing you are doing: Instantly thinking all pump players are like that: Old school elitist.

If I was generalizing, then yes.
But I am saying semi players like YOU, not ALL semi players. The ones who look down on pumps for being just that: Pumps.
I get a lot of the "Oh.. I have a (blank) in my trunk if you want to use it"
I usually say
"Thanks but no... I have a DM5 in my trunk if you want to use that"

I don;t hate all pump players, just the ones with the god complexes. I've played pump before, and I guess it's different strokes for different folks or something. In your original post you did come off as slightly arrogant, whether you meant to or not, I was just putting that out there.

I too hate the elitist attitude that comes with a lot of pump players. I also find it funny that people immediately freak out and are like "Oh my that person must be a paintball GOD!! They're using a pump! Only skilled players use that!!" It's just a different gun used in the same game of paintball, there's nothing really too special about that.

What Linus was saying before and now has been true for me too.
People either love pump players and see them as gods, or hate them and see them as either n00bs, poor people, or scum. Usually it's the former, with various opinions of inferiority mixed in.
For me, there's always one guy that hates me among the others who love me. The day usually goes like this:
1) Unpack. 2) Set up equipment. a) Receive stares. b) Receive questions. 1) Answer questions. 3) Walk out to field. 4) Get chosen last. 5) Play. 6) Make my first elimination of the day. 7) Get chosen first. 8) Get into long discussions about pump play a) Answer more questions. b) Deny offers of people who want to loan me a semi. c) Confuse people with the cost of my gun. d) Be told I'm cool/crazy/stupid/wasteful (of money) 9) Get harassed by the kid(s) that hate me. a) Counter with cockyness to stand my ground. b) Offer a 1 vs. 1 if kid continues. 1) Play 1 vs. 1 a) Win or lose, high probability of gaining kid's respect. 2) Kid tells me it's a waste of his paint. a) Continue being hated by kids. b) Gain more support from others. 10) Play more. 11) Thank field owner. 12) Pack. a) Get bugged by the fanbois. b) More stares from the people who hate me. 13) Leave.
The cockyness/god-complex on my part is a result of all the attention I, and many other pump players, get. I don't try to be a jackass to anybody, I just do my thing and hope I'm likable. The side of me you would hate comes from the encounters I outlined above. Somebody criticizes me, I stand my ground. To the person doing the criticizing, I'm the asshole because:
a) I have a pump, so I'm automatically an asshole, b) I to justify why it's worth having the gun by explaining my gear, showing them how light the gun is, how much money I save. (People often see this as an attempt to show superiority, while I'm just trying to show them why it's my preference and that it often can be beneficial to use one) c) I eliminated the guy. Expecting me to be an asshole to him after the game, due to reason one, he attacks me regardless of whether I want to say anything or not to him. d) I'm a generous and polite guy to strangers (unless I'm being attacked). Some people just don't like that for some reason. The fact that I do that and at the same time have a pump makes it worse.
The few pump players I know take shots at semi players in jest, and nothing more. This usually includes offering a soldering iron (that don't have with me) to a guy having electrical problems or offering a 10-round tube to a person out of paint. In both cases I've even had people accept my offers.
tl;dr:
The pump players I know try to be humble, but sound (to other players) like jackasses when talking about the merits of our choice. Either that or we have to defend attacks from the people who automatically hate us. Cockyness helps us hold our ground against such people.

QFT, and right on the dot.
I too offer people 10 rd tubes when out of paint and I get the looks like "You must be crazy, only 10 shots?"
Can't forget the ever famous "You spent HOW much on that?!" when I owned a Buzzard.
