I would still really love to be a fighter pilot, but that's not really a plausible option for me, but I suppose that's still my "dream."

"Realistically" nowadays, I'd either like to do something big with International Affairs as either a marketing exec. or possibly even something with the CIA/NSA/etc.  And I've considered doing a 3-year stint with the PJ's after getting out of college to facillitate that.

On the other hand, I've really considered shifting towards domestic concerns, and moving into politics. My family doesn't have the millions it would take to personally fund that though...

really wanted to be a pilot of any kind, but that didnt really work out.  could have done it, but it would have put me in quite a bit of debt.

now my dream job is to be a motorcycle cop with either the state, local, or county cops.  maybe something federal like DEA or ATFE.

Intel has been doing much worse before this.  The only difference is Intel has so much money and power it can afford to screw up a bunch and then bounce right back up.

AMD's new Phenom line is going to blow away all the current Core2 cores clock-for-clock, the only questions are how good will Penryn be and how well do they clock?  This month is they're best shot at retaking the market.  The new ATI cards are very promising, so they may get a leg up in the GPU market.

If AMD can't at least hold its own by the beginning of Q1, they'll have a very hard time capturing the enthusiast market till the next rehash of their lines.  On the flip side, AMD is solidly placed for the server market.  They're chips run far cooler and with far less power for quite a bit less, making them very heavy competitors with Intel's.

AMD isn't going anywhere now, they just aren't healthy at the moment.

As for realistically, I'm basically doing what I set out to do. I'm an executive chef under the age of 30 and am really causing quite a stir in the local food scene. I've already stolen a lot of business from one of the best rated restaurants in the area and am continuing to improve the menu each and every day.

40k is not a lot of money once you have family and obligations.  That's basically twice minimum wage.  And unlike the quarry worker, the teachers had to go to school for a long time.  I don't think that is a fair comparison.  Relative to others of comparable education, teachers are clearly underpaid.

40k is well below the median national income, and probably below the median income in each state.  If you adjust for the 9-month work year, then it is basically median.  By no measure is that a lot of money.

As for me - I would very much enjoy an unstructured existence with a mix of speaking engagements, writing opportunities, and teaching gigs.  All of which would somehow make lots of money.

I was gonna say... teacher's wages are incredibly low considering how much schooling they need/get.  My mom has a masters degree and i think that some of the jobs my friend, who's graduating with a bio-medical engineering degree in may, is applying to pay close to how much she makes.

Granted, it depends where you work too.

my major averages about 50k a year for jobs after graduation.  to me, that seems like a ton of money right now.

I'll second that.  Granted that I am greedier than most, but I am also confident that most students drastically underestimate the amount of money they will need/want once they enter the real world.

Here in MKE, for instance (where PCF and I both live), a decent house in a middle-class suburban neighborhood will run you $300,000 or so.  If you have $60k for a 20% down payment (which you got how?), then your mortgage payment is about $1,400 per month, plus $200 for taxes, so $1,600 total.  If you like to live in the city, a decent apartment will cost about the same.

Your $20k car gives you a car payment of $500 or so.  Electricity/gas bill - $150 per month.

Total so far:  $2,250 per month, and we haven't eaten yet, or taken out insurance, or bought gasoline or clothes.

And your 50k salary?  Figure 20% effective tax rate, so that leaves 40k.  Now take out $1,000 for insurance, $3,000 for health/dental insurance, and we are left with $36,000, or $3000/month.

After our fixed expenses, that leaves $750/month for food, gas, clothes, entertainment, travel - and we still haven't saved a dime for retirement.

That is doable for a single guy - but certainly not living the high life.  And add a wife and child(ren) to that, and 50k is basically starvation money.  You will be choosing every month between food and electricity.

i think most students see the salary as a large amount of money because... realistically what are they doing for income right now?

part time job (usually) during the school year.  Classes take priority over any job when you're in school... at least that's how it should be.  and unless you bag a really nice job, you're not making any where near 40-50k a year.

It's all about perspective.... my brother just got a job at a security company driving around in armored trucks and filling atms and all that jazz.  He said his first paycheck was basically double that of what he was making at his full time, pretty good position shopko job.  Is he making 100k a year?  hell no, but when he got that first paycheck, he said that he felt like he had a ton of money to spend now.  Again, he's in a decent apartment living with his fiance and a friend, so his rent and utilities aren't incredibly expensive... but still.

It may not be enough to live the good life, but it's a pretty good starting point

Agreed - and I think that's the key.  $50k is (a) a good starting point and (b) a respectable amount of cash for a single guy living the simple life.

What it is NOT is enough money to raise a family in comfortable surroundings.

My experience has been that students have a tendency to focus far too much on the starting salary, and not nearly enough on the 5-10 year earning expectation.

50K in Texas goes a whole lot further lol. You can get a really nice house here for about 150K, and if you look in the country, you can get a nice house with about ten or fifteen acres for about the same.

I'd like to hit around 100K a year, which is about the most my profession will ever top out at. 50K is a minimum to leave comfortably around here, but I realize it's alot more in other places.

Certainly true, and many other places as well.  Of course, in Manhattan 300k gets you a cardboard box.  You have to judge by local standards.

This tends to be reflected in salaries, though.  Almost all of the high-paying jobs are in/near big cities with high cost of living.  Incomes in rural areas are much lower.

These are of course also things to consider when choosing a career.  Don't plan on being a hot-shot investment banker while living in Broken Bow.

Are you guys serious about the houses where you guys live? Around here, everything is soo expensive in comparison to the numbers you guys are saying. A decent house here is at least 550k. We just sold our house which was like 3200 sq. feet I think for like 800K. It was a nice house, but by no means huge. When we moved, my dad built it (he's a contractor), i think it's like 4000 sq feet and it's market value is like 1.2 or something like that. The salaries must be bigger or something up here, because no way can anyone live off 50k a year with the cost of everything so much. I knew it varied, but I had no idea it was that different in different parts of the country.

Those numbers are fair.  A million dollars buys you a multi-building mansion estate in the middle South, or a studio apartment on the Upper East Side, and something in between most places.

Cost of real estate is the biggest determinant of cost of living, and it varies drastically across the country.
