Christian. I am also interested in seeing the results of this. It seems like
more of the new members lean towards the conservative/christian side.

You do realize that just because you went to a catholic school that doesn't make you catholic. There are certain sacraments you receive that actually make you catholic.

Well I went to one. Yes, the Church of Christ, not the Mormons.

The spooked out southern protestant group that thinks that everything is the devil. Dancing, musical instruments, voting Democrat, all of which will land you a spot in hell. I have never seen a more conservative group than the CoC. Drinking and smoking are the devil. All of my friends in high-school were prohibited from doing anything on a Wednesday night due to the fear God would strike them down for missing a mid-week service.

Also, I cannot understand their belief that they are the only "REAL" Christian church in existence. They have it in their heads that they were the original church (even though they were formed in the mid-1800's) and therefore are the only ones getting into heaven.

Not to mention, they have everything from CoC pre-schools to high-schools, and high-school graduates are usually forced into going to CoC colleges, like Harding, Lipscomb, and Faulkner, where they get half assed educations and usually end up majoring in Bible studies.

Well the one you went to is a lot different than the one I go to, although we don't use musical instruments either.  We don't prohibit smoking (several of our members smoke too), and in the Bible it doesn't say not to drink, except for Elders.  And we don't claim to be the "one" Church going on since the 1st Century, we just do exaclty as the Church in the New Testament did things.  Which is why we don't use musical instruments, because they're not authorized in the New Testament, and were not introduced into Christian worship until several hundred years after Christ's death.

Look into Church of Christ practices, and you will see a scriptural basis for everything we do.  Other denominations...eh, not so much.  We just like to play it safe.  If it's in the Bible, it's good.  Not in the Bible, not gonna be in our worship assembly.

I hope that all made sense, if not, oh well, I don't feel like explaining it further.  Go to Wikipedia or something if you want more info.

See, that mindset always made me laugh. Unless you meet secretly in people's homes in small groups and discuss current matters, you are not doing things how the 1st century did.

Also, the CoC has some of the most blatant context violations I have ever seen.

For some reason, the CoC takes everything Paul wrote as a blue-print as to how a church is supposed to be.

Paul was writing to specific churches for a reason. I am of the opinion, as are most people who look at it logically, that if Paul's letters were to be used as a church manual then it would be called as such. However, each letter addresses problems each church in the area was having, and how that church specifically could fix it. It was not supposed to be a blanket statement for everyone.

Which brings up another thing that I could not understand about the CoC, their blatant sexism. The whole "woman not to lead the man" thing comes from a suggestion how to fix a problem at a specific church (I think it was in Corinth, not so sure now), and somehow you all took that and ran with it to the point that if a woman dare leads a prayer in front of men she is sinning.

I will never understand the mindset of females that actually are OK with it.

Yeah, CoC is pretty far out there.  A good friend of mine is CoC.  When he got married, he made his wife quit her church because it wasn't conservative enough.  She was Assembly of God.

And, of course, he gives me bizarre propaganda every time we meet.

As for me, I don't hold to any organized religion.  Belief-wise, it gets a little more complicated.

Exactly. The bible is too be interpreted. Much like the Constitution. Of
course everything doesn't state exactly how matters should be handle
because things change. However, it does give a pretty good guideline of
how you should approach new challenges/decision.

As for the CoC, I have only been to one thing at a CoC, so I can't give
much insight on that. I'm pretty sure that there are two different
"branches" of the CoC, so that could be a reason for some of the discrepancy.

Organized religion unfortunately often becomes a political power struggle instead of a genuine concern for fellow humanity.

As for the Bible, there are alot of good lessons in the Bible. While you may disagree with religion, you may even be atheist, you can still take some of the Bible's messages without applying yourself to any religion.

This man speaks truth... sort of.

While we can take and use the good messages of the Bible:

1) We don't need to. Most of the good that comes out of those passages are a result of logical thinking that all adults are capable of.

2) You normally wouldn't discern between humanistic and anti-humanistic morality while reading a text such as the Bible if you're looking for inspiration from it without knowing its controversies.

Organized religion unfortunately often becomes a
political power struggle instead of a genuine concern for fellow
humanity.

As for the Bible, there are alot of good lessons in the Bible. While you
may disagree with religion, you may even be atheist, you can still take
some of the Bible's messages without applying yourself to any religion.

This man speaks truth... sort of.While we can take and use
the good messages of the Bible:1) We don't need to. Most of the good
that comes out of those passages are a result of logical thinking that all
adults are capable of.2) You normally wouldn't discern between
humanistic and anti-humanistic morality while reading a text such as the
Bible if you're looking for inspiration from it without knowing its
controversies.

While some of the lessons can be discerned from logical thinking, I
honestly don't believe that the Bible is the true basis of a true Christian
lifestyle. Sure, it is the source of the lessons, but to be a Christian is to
have a relationship with God, and that doesn't come from a book.

Realize the joke, newb.

He seemed serial to me. My sarcasm meter must be out of whack.
although you did kind of fail, i liked the link.  If i didn't know any better, i'd think that Scientology was along the lines of FSM.

?

exactly why I asked who actually follows/practices

Yea, when I was younger I went to a private catholic school. Just never got into religion.

You do realize that just because you went to a catholic school that doesn't make you catholic. There are certain sacraments you receive that actually make you catholic.

I know, I was born as a Catholic, and the private school I had gone to had Catholic views and we had to go to the church next to the school and what not.

I was raised in the Church of Christ.

Whoever said that they follow the Bible completely is full of it, or just has their head up their ass.
The have many practices (such as, if you ever drink alcohol in any amount, you're sinning) that are completely out of whack with what the Bible teaches.

It's nicknamed the "Cult o' Christ" for a reason.
