M-98 Build Off!
That's right. It's winter time so people are dumping their old beaters over on PBN, MCB, and every other BST forum there is right now. I think it's about time we did a build off again!
What's a build-off you ask? Well, it's where we agree upon a marker series that can be had for fairly cheap. Set a price-cap (you can't spend over X-dollars on the build process) and at the end of one or two months, we see what everyone has produced and open judging begins to declare a winner!
Rules:
- The marker must be a Tippmann Model-98 series or Clone (BT 4 series is allowed, PCS is not, for example)
- The total cost of the marker project must not exceed $150 USD.
- You have until the first of January to find a suitable marker to modify/build
- No modification is to take place before January 1st, 2008.
- Purchasing of parts before January 1, 2008 is allowed.
- All entries must be posted by the 28th of February, 2008 giving the entrants 2 months from the build-start date to complete their project.
- Total cost does not include the cost of any tools purchased to complete the project. Professional milling/painting/powdercoating costs DO apply to the price cap however.
- Judges will be selected on the 1st of February from a voluntary pool similar to the TOTM judging system.
- There will be a pannel of 15 judges and the entrants will post their finished markers in the "M-98 Build-Off" thread in the Gallery
- Pictures of works in progress may be posted in the gallery section
- Outside help is allowed and encouraged!
- And Finally, all participants are encouraged to have a lot of fun!
So, go grab an M-98 or clone for cheap from one of the other forums out there, keep it under $150 total on parts, upgrades, and paint. You've got 3+ months to come up with the scratch and join the fun! I just picked up a $60 M-98 in working condition with a vertical adapter. That price includes shipping! Be frugal, be creative, have fun!
-Tallen
Oh, and there will be a prize for the winner! Nothing spectacular, but still, some alright stuff!
Here's the Gallery thread for entries and any questions:

Oh, and I've put the info up over on MCB, so hopefully we'll get a lot of entries!
I can also tell you that a HaloB will be one of the prizes. I'm furnishing all of them, so they're going to be used more than likely, but in good shape.

Damn you tallen! How is the bt4 allowed?
Can i allready own the parts and therefore, they count as nothing?
How do trades factor into this?
I may have to participate.
To the nation... awayyyyyy!!!

Carl, trades, so long as no cash is involved, are considered as "already owned" so they don't factor in to the total cost. The cost cap is to just keep people from going out and buying e-bolts and matrix boards and throwing them in a body to win. Also, this has to be a "new" built marker, not something you've had lying around the house that you just dust off, and throw some new grips on and call it a day.
So, to clarify
I couldn't just grab an old project off the shelf, do nothing with it, and enter it. You can use pre-existing projects, but you need to snap some pictures along the way showing how you're improving upon it, etc. The idea is to take a near-stock or completely stock marker and build/mod it from there.
Trades are allowed and don't count towards the price cap
Already possessed materials are also allowed and don't count toward the price-cap.
Monk, you've got over two months to scratch up some cash if you want to participate! There are plenty of $50 tippmanns out there. If you need help finding one, let me know and I can point you in the right direction. So long as the marker is finished by the end of Feb, you can enter it. You don't have to have everything purchased by the first of January. I put the low price-cap on it specifically so that college guys (who tend to populate this forum) could have a chance to join in.

You've got 3+ months, and $150 isn't a ton to come up with. If you need help finding a cheapo-98 to start with, let me know. I've been keeping MCB and Craigslist staked out in anticipation of this.

one of the greatest groups of young guys and old-farts to play the sport. There's a big emphasis on Pump over there, but still tons of electro and semi guys as well.

That is a great idea Tallen. I don't have the time to devote to a project, but I wish I did!

I am now officially entering and if you still need a judge, I'll volunteer.
I will probably have to document all my supplies because I have a lot of crap before this was announced ( so you know I didn't just buy all of it and lie)
In all honesty, I was going to start a new project in spring 08' but this is forcing me o start a little earlier :)
I wish everyone luck.
BTW, how are tye being judged? coolest looking or what?

hmm so already owned equipment... Let's say I'm working on a current project and I have 2 of everything. The first set of items I'm currently modding the second set hasn't been touched. If I start on the second set Jan 1, 08 doing the same exact mod, will the existing second set of parts be included in the total allowed $150? It's already owned equipment.

Yes to the cost is not included? Or yes the cost is part of the $150? Sorry for being a little ambiguous initially.
So... 1. The parts I already own DO NOT COUNT so I have $150 I can spend
or
2. The parts I already own need to be less or equal to $150.
Thanks.

Puma, it's #1 not #2.
Berron, unfortunately, yes, it does count towards the total $150, but don't be discouraged as the build-off isn't judged on how much crud you can buy and bolt on your marker. There have been some pretty nice designs that cost well under $100 so long as you have the tools to make it happen.
