M-98 Build Off!

That's right. It's winter time so people are dumping their old beaters over on PBN, MCB, and every other BST forum there is right now. I think it's about time we did a build off again!

What's a build-off you ask? Well, it's where we agree upon a marker series that can be had for fairly cheap. Set a price-cap (you can't spend over X-dollars on the build process) and at the end of one or two months, we see what everyone has produced and open judging begins to declare a winner!

Rules:

  • The marker must be a Tippmann Model-98 series or Clone (BT 4 series is allowed, PCS is not, for example)
  • The total cost of the marker project must not exceed $150 USD.
  • You have until the first of January to find a suitable marker to modify/build
  • No modification is to take place before January 1st, 2008.
  • Purchasing of parts before January 1, 2008 is allowed.
  • All entries must be posted by the 28th of February, 2008 giving the entrants 2 months from the build-start date to complete their project.
  • Total cost does not include the cost of any tools purchased to complete the project. Professional milling/painting/powdercoating costs DO apply to the price cap however.
  • Judges will be selected on the 1st of February from a voluntary pool similar to the TOTM judging system.
  • There will be a panel of 15 judges and the entrants will post their finished markers in the "M-98 Build-Off" thread in the Gallery
  • Pictures of works in progress may be posted in the gallery section
  • Outside help is allowed and encouraged!
  • Trades are allowed and don't count towards the price cap
  • Already possessed materials are also allowed and don't count toward the price-cap.
  • We won't be keeping a running tab for each marker, that is up to you to do. Be fair, be a good sportsman, and be honest. You don't want to be screwed over by unfair competition, so follow the golden rule.
  • IF the judges find something to be out of the ordinary we will confer together on the subject and the majority decision of the judges will be the final word.
  • There will be two categories of entries: Mil-Sim/Scenario and Speedball/Recball. Please remember to inform us of what category you are entering when you post your final work. Entries without a declaration of category will be disqualified from the competition.
  • Entries will be judged on at least the following criteria. Creativity, Quality of Workmanship, Style, Cohesiveness, and Functionality.
  • And Finally, all participants are encouraged to have a lot of fun!

There ARE prizes given away in this competition! There are some good ones to boot! I have at least a Halo and an HPA tank to give away at the end of February, so join in, have fun, and win some stuff!

So, go grab an M-98 or clone for cheap from one of the other forums out there, keep it under $150 total on parts, upgrades, and paint. You've got 3+ months to come up with the scratch and join the fun! Be frugal, be creative, have fun!

I think I'm interested. $150 is not a bad price for a potentially sick gun.

Judge Plz. I'd join in on this, but:

1. I want a Autococker
2. My Mag project is already taking up my time.
3. 98's cost money.
4. You, DT, or SRT 4 will pull out some ultra rare e-bolt or some thing like that rendering me dead in this competition.

So, is it just M98's, or is it the entire 98 line?

I didn't want to do this, but now you don't leave me any choice. I'm thinking a scenario E-Bolted M98. I need a good scenario gun, and most of my design is going to be fab'ed from wood...

Hm. It's gonna be cool.

Beniotown, yep, anything purchased prior to knowledge of the competition is excluded from the $150 price cap. If you have an e-bolt lying around, feel free to use it. Remember, creativity and innovation not only in the functioning of the marker but in it's styling will be part of the main judging points. So while an e-bolt or the like will be awesome additions to the marker overall, they aren't a guaranteed win. I know you're a very capable airsmith and look forward to seeing what you produce!

DeTrevni, It's the entire '98 line and applicable clones (BT 4 etc) not just the classic M-98. Glad to see you're going to join in! I've been getting a lot of interest so far, and one of the MCB guys has requested to link to the build-off here over on the Underground Mod Shop. I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone produces. I may have to divide the build-off into two categories (Scenario/Milsim and Speedball/Non-Scenario) and come up with a few more prizes if we get enough entrants.

College guys and gals! Don't be afraid! I know the $150 cap seems like a lot of money, but '98's can be had for around $50-$60 if you look hard enough and I know most of you have access to at least paint and some cutting tools (at the very least a dremmel and some files!). You've got a lot of time to come up with the scratch to buy a junker and turn it into something nice with a minimal of parts and a decent amount of effort.

My financial status for now is going low, I have no more jobs that why I wanted to use other part I already have and like 2 week ago I purchased m98 parts to be use for a project. I shoud find another jobs by the end of the contest just buying something take 3-4 week for me before I receive it.

I will try to keep that project to a minimum. Guess I will need to use the dremel this time :P hehehe

Tallen, I'll Judge.

Also I think you should put a rep cap on judges. Members with one post should not be allowed to judge. No offense to you RealtorTommy, but you have no rep so how do we know you have any idea of what is involved with building a marker, or if you are going to hang around long enough to judge the competition anyways?

Snake, thanks for the suggestion, and it doesn't fall on deaf ears. However, the build-off is larger than just the tippmann forum and encompasses the MCB forum and possibly even the underground mod shop forum as well. Hence, post counts here don't mean much if the judges are from elsewhere. Tommy is a long-standing and well reputed member of both MCB and PBN and I know him from both places. Don't be surprised if you see some new names in the contest or the judges list due to the broad base of the build-off.

Just as a number to put out there. I've had 90 views of the linking thread over on MCB, that's roughly half the traffic this thread has received just in the past 24 hours. I've a feeling that we should see a good amount of entrants.

Goody. I like big events. I'll try my hand at scenario. I've never done a scenario gun before. And it's my opinion a scenario E-Bolt is gonna be different, as they all go for speedball 98's...

I assume that anything millsim probably won't win.

Looking for a 98 now, but I think you need to revise rules on trading.

What's to stop someone from getting the best 98 ever and spending zero on it because he traded?

Well, if it's two categories, one scenario and one speedball, why wouldn't a milsim win?

It occurs to me, this is gonna draw a lot of umph away from my TOTM contest.

Edit: 8k posts. Woo!

The fact that they'd have to trade a lot of stuff to be able to get that "best 98 ever". If you sell something for cash and buy parts with that cash, it's money. If you're willing to trade up a whole marker of yours for say, an E-bolt, or some really nice regs for the same, that's your loss. The cost/benefit is just silly when it comes to trading away good stuff for something to put into a build-off marker. If you've got a bunch of spare parts hanging around, cool, use them. If you want to trade up good gear for parts, feel free, I'm not going to hold it against you. What I don't want to see is someone with more cash going out and just buying the best of everything to win. Carl, the thing to remember is that it's an internet contest for some prizes I've had offered to me for deep discounts to try and get a lot of interest in this.

The rules stay the same. If you feel like trading away everything you have for some 98 parts, that's your perogative.

DT, I don't think it will draw away too much. This is a '98 only competition and is a build off. TOTM comps usually are made up of currently built markers.

$60-70 seems to be the average for a 98.

Too bad I currently only have $50.

Ehh, I noticed yesterday that I needed to pay some attention to the paintjob on my 98 anyway. Might as well plan some other mods and do this. I'll see what I can finish up (cocker project in the works right now) before Jan 1 and do this. I do wish that the last week or two of December was part of the build time, though. A lot of us, working stiffs and college kids alike, have a good bit of free time in late december to devote ot things like this that we don't necessarily have after the first of the year.

Regardless, I'll judge if you still need someone.

Thanks for the intro tallen702....I will not be building in this contest.

to thejudge....I don't think you need alot of cash or machinery....you would be surprised what a dremel,JBweld and a trip to a gun show could build.....

I would like if it's voted on by the judges to put a minimum of four pics and a maximum of six pics of the marker (sized)for the final judging in the rules......the reason is that I have viewed some contests where to many pics swamped the thread....to few to really judge the marker ....

I want to be honest and fair! I started my project 3 weeks ago when I bought a brand new 98c and a few hundreds in ups. But If I am reading the rules right,

As long as halt work and I dont spend more than $150 between now and Jan 1st? im good right?  If not, oh well.

As for my project can you say "98 Turbo"
I almost everything I need but I  have only  just  finished  the internal polish and custom paint(black/olive, both ultra flat(not camo). But the plan is low pressure, Palmers Fatty, fully upped TechT  cyclone, super R/T, 1/8"I.D.hoses/fittings, so-on and so-on......you get the point. I will probably spend my $150 on that Dye 05 drop w/ rail with the Dye 05 on/off I have been wanting and anything else I can think of. Is it fair? I dont know? My project may not be right for this contest, but it sure is right for me!! Either way its cool! There is always TOTM. I am not looking for a prize just bragging rights and Ill get that anyways Good luck everyone!

Honestly I dont even have the cash for the custom right now.  I just bought the trilogy and I am trying to pay off a ring I bought.  Plus christmas always puts a squeeze on my budget.  Hopefully after I graduate I can get a lil more gear.  Maybe I will just work on my A5 and Tactical trilogy instead.

Also how do you become a jusge.  If I cant build anything maybe I can help judge them.

Yep, just halt work until the 1st of January and you're good to go. It's a fairly open competition. We're doing two classes, Milsim/Scenario and Speedball/Rec-Play (non militarized so to speak) Both classes will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, each category will also have a "most innovative" placement.

I'll update the main post later today to better encompass the rules and the questions that have been asked.

I still need judges guys, if you aren't interested in building, and would like to judge, let me know. Post counts aren't a factor. I'm going by what I and Tommy know of your posts on this and other forums.

Okay with the $150 cap,... if you buy a package that contains a gun, but also other gear (through ebay auctions, etc), are you able to deduct the value of the unused gear from your budget (with a judges evaluation), or if you are able to sell the excess equipment, are you then able to deduct that from the amount originally applied to the $150 budget.

Such that in a hypthetical scenario, I buy a gun, a mask, a tank, and a harness for 65 dollars. Obviously the harness, mask, and tank make up some of that cost, and are not going to be used in regards to the build off. If you are than able to sell them for (lets say) 30 dollars,... would you be allowed to deduct that from the 65 dollar amount... making the cost of the marker 35 dollars attributed to the budgeted amount?

I will throw my opinion out in the open and let tallen702 confer with the other judges.

This contest is also about honesty and sportsmanship....with this said...I would encourage everyone to look for deals to keep costs down so more contestants(you) can enter.....a 4 axis CNC mill job is not going to impress me anymore than a low buck. why did I not think about that modification(s) marker....also just bolting on something isn't going to work for me either...

There is not a simple way to do a checks and balances on what a contestant buys or trades...so it's your word....if we find out something is not legit, then we will cross that road if it happens.....If you buy something in a lot as described by Ccool I personally do not care about the extra's. If this person wants to keep the extras or sell them they should not be penalized...I would like a just and fair market/deal price declared for the item(s) used ...I really do not want to keep a running list on everyone and make my fingers sore by punching the numbers into a calculator....I really, really don't want to have a rule list three miles long...but even if it's in a grey area...the judges have the final say....just so you know...if that's not ok please don't enter into this contest....

With the sportsmanship...help the fellow contestant....ok aleast to a certain point.....you don't want to help to much...you do want to win, don't you?...but you get my point....if you know where an item or part is that they are looking for or a how-to....help them out....there may be a sportsmanship prize...or maybe not...

I'm working on some prizes....Tallon702 doesn't even know yet..so the pot is sweetened.......Thanks for putting up with this long post......

I don't want to double post so I'll post here....

Tallon702 has updated the rules....please take a second and gloss over them....

Maybe down the road, but price caps add another challenge to the whole thing.

This sounds like a great idea with one of the best platforms to build off of, the 98. Everything seems well thought out so far but I was wondering if the loader and tank count towards the marker being judged and if they count towards the budget? In most cases I would say no because the focus should be on the marker I beleive. However in some cases like a custom made spring fed magazine I would say yes because that is something more creative than a like a revy and should hold some merit. So is the contest about a complete, ready to fire marker, or just marker itself?

If I can get my own project 98 done, which would not qaulify for this contest at all, before the the start of this build off then im in. I can't stop thinking of ideas haha. Well good luck to everyone and be honest, honorable, and have fun, because in reality that is what paintball is all about.

Grr, I must decide between an SLG and building a 98.  Tough, tough choice.

Just the marker itself, Tanks and loaders are not considered into the price unless you are doing something like welding a spring-fed S/C feed tube to the marker. Anything that changes the composition of the marker itself is what we are looking at. Oh, and for all intents and purposes, the barrel is considered a part of the marker.

I think im going to do woodsball, but I'll have to look into the cost for both.

I've been buying too many markers lately and didn't think I could swing it.....

I may jump into this...just got alittle money...If I do it will be scenario.....

Since I'm sure the speedball mods done by forumers here would be much better than mine, if I do this, than it would be millsim.

I'm looking to score a really long battel, a lee-enfield stock, a trinity mg4, and a small, thin tank to fit inside the stock.

(looks like I could just take off the grip and use the lee-enfield trigger assembly to trip the sear)

Hey Tallen this is an superb idea, count me in!!

I've been gathering parts and have pretty much finished getting mostly everything I need to make my dream woods gun about 4 weeks ago when after I bought duracoat paint and my Crossfire 88/45.  [Actually I think could buy a few more things... :)]

So I've just been waiting till exams are over and I was going to start milling and modifying my tippy cause I'll have a week when I don't work, don't have school or do anything (except for recovering from getting my wisdom teeth taken out)... horray. lol.

Anyway I'll PM you pics of all my gear and all my upgrades with my name in the pic so you don't think I just bought all this stuff for the competition as it would definitely cost more than $150.  Plus I told detrev about my plans about 9 months ago.  So he can attest to the fact that I've gathering parts for a long time so that I may someday finish my Tippy.  (He might even give you hints on what you may see when it's done).

Edit --- It's going to be a scenario marker.

Actually, I was gonna move to disallow SRT's Pred...

It was built prior to the competition, and cost WAY more than $150.

Not to mention, it's too pretty! It's unfair!

One question, I have tons of parts already(recievers, rams, boards, internals, material, ect), does that add to the price?

And if anyone is interested in any 98c, pm cause I have tons of parts.

I don't think I'm going to be able to do this one.  I'm thinking about doing a lot of walk on next year and trying to get on a team, so my 'Cocker could use a little upgrading to make it more tourney-formidable more than I need another money-pit of a gun.  Im thinking along the lines of E2 and possibly even an MQ2.  This really depends on the cash I get from selling a few projects I am yet to finish.

best way to get a 98 is to win one in a tourney like i did O.o but ive had that one for about a year now so i wonder if it counts.
