And its making me feel really inadequate.

I mean come on, who had participated in 15 after school activities  and done over 10 jobs of volunteer work.
Guess I'm not cut out for college.

Thats going to be my main problem.
I'm a good student, 3.14 GPA, 84th in a class of 354.
SATs- 590 on math and reading, 560 on writing.
But those damn questions of volunteer work and extra-curricular activities, those are going to kill me.

Ahh, and then there are the essays.
"Write a 5 page paper about how you cured cancer or did something nearly as important"

You should just go to a trade school and become a mechanic. It's good money these days!

I have a ton of community service which will help. Also one of my good friends is president of the organization, so he could always sign me up for a few extra... But no sports and not too many clubs which might be bad.

Did you not apply to any bigger schools? I feel like that GPA alone would
get you denied from some bigger schools (no offense). Everything else is
pretty solid.

BB, the fact that you went to a public high school has very little to do with it.

UofM gives bonus points just for having gone to Lake Orion High School because it is considered a great school, not because it is considered public.

In most schools in the US, a 70% is one percent above failing.

That's High Schools, and a lot of places don't use that grading scale.  In college, it goes to the ten-point scale.  The US is pretty much regionally divided on the High School level for that.

You never said you weren't?  You said "I guess I'll be the new forum pilot".  I assumed you wanted to fly for a living, civilian.  It is my understanding that quite a large number of airline pilots don't do much GA flying.  There may be more "fun" airplanes than an RV, but my first new airplane will likely be an RV that I built myself.  Don't know why you thing AE jobs are insecure, but I can assure you a job as a pilot (civilian at least) is much more insecure than an engineering job.  I will  have fun with the job, otherwise I wouldn't want to pursue it.  On top of that I'll be making enough money to fly as much as I want.

With regards to my credentials:
4.24 weighted GPA

I procrastinated like hell and ended up settling for a community college, where I haven't done as well as I could until this semester. It's pretty pathetic.

Strange... Every school I've gone to:

100-89.5 = A
89.4-79.5 = B
79.4-69.5 = C
69.4-60 = D
59 and lower = Fail

That just doesn't make sense.

I'll stick with the 10% system I'm used to thank you.

It's 5 points, but you are right, it doesn't make sense.

My school was retarded and had a 5 point system.

100-95 A
94-90 B
89-85 C
84-75 D
74 and below=fail

So retarded. I ended up with like a 1.9GPA because of it. Now I can never go to a real college. Screwed me for the rest of my life because they are so damn stupid.

What is all the fuss about letter grades?  At least at my school they mean nothing.  We get numbers on the report cards/transcripts, and usually we don't even get a letter on the progress reports (given out ever 3 weeks).

Wow.

Letter grades directly translate into GPA. GPA isn't determined by percents, its determined by letter grade alone.

Yea but Pezzer has a point. Most schools recalculate your GPA when the get
yours transcript anyways, so high school letter grade isn't really that
important for a lot of schools.

At least when I was in high school the only thing you saw on anything was just a letter grade. That was it. No numbers.

Actually, my school does it my percents alone.  Its outlined in the book they give everyone at the beginning of the year.

Lol college applications seem fun. I have a 4.2 weighted gpa right now,  I will have taken 9 AP classes, and Im president of two clubs. Hopefully it is enough to get me into BU/UNC Chapel Hill, or maybe Ann Arbor. But if not...there's always UF/FSU.

Start a BS club at your school..it looks good to be president/founder of something. I started the Russian Culture Club, which has pretty much turned into a group of people from debate chilling after school and calling it a "club." Works for me though.

Oh, I have a decent knowledge on Russian Culture. Nothing to in depth, but my debate partner who founded the club with me has travelled there several times and we've done some research. We do some "talk" about Russia during out "meetings" but my point was that it doesn't really take much to start a club. Pick something that interests you, find a chill teacher to sponsor it, and find some friends/people that also like it. We have a DDR Club, a Guitar Hero Club, an Anime Club, and many other things like that at my school.

I'd like to see a college app with "Guitar Hero Club" listed as an activity...

My friend put down Founder and President, Ultimate Frisbee Club, and chancellor of the Scientology Club. But then again, he also did NHS, SNHS, Chess Club, Jewish Club, Model UN, Debate, and mock trial, along with several other things. If anything, it shows you have a life outside of school, more or less, it shows a better "you".

You don't have to actually be part of the religion to join...more of you express interest in it?
