i had to take my GFs mustang sn95 (04 with 3.9L)
anyways the dude comes out and hes like "we need to reaim the headlights or we cant pass inspection. its 17$"
1st thought is BS its 3 years old... but whatever
i get home and tell my gf about it and find out the dealer replaced both headlamps 3 weeks ago... no way they are off...
im so sick of mechanics trying or managing to screw people over.
i knew it was crap when he came out because 1 its damn near brand new and 2 where i used to work if the inspector couldent find anything wrong they would say the headlights were off...
anyways the sn95 mustangs look sick but are uncomfortable, hard to see out of and drive like crap compaired to my Grand prix...
edit: the ONLY time a mechanic will ever touch my car is 1 inspection or 2 if i can get it checked for free...(not worked on just diagnosed) or MAYBE if i know the mechanic personally and hes helping me diagnose a problem.

I hate pretty much any mustang between like the '70's and '07. The rounded front just doesn't look good on them IMO, i prefer the boxier look.

they said they were gunna fail it. either way 16$ to take it nextdoor and get it looked at or 17$ to have the headlights aimed...
fords are crap cant argue but i grew up on chevy so i know how to work on them. take care of the car and it wont have any problems but if they do have a problem i know how to fix them...
i do all my own work and im starting to do all the work on the stang as well (gfs warranty ran out this month)
agreed with the classic and sn195 (05+) body style but the 04 just makes me tingle a little. i still think my 1968 is sexier though...

I just spent $260 yesterday getting 2 new front tires, alignment, and rotation. Alignment was soooo bad that the front tires were almost bald.
PS-- You should have said "No thanks, I'll do it" and do it yourself.

Most garages would charge a second visit, and inspection fees again if he came back, and probably wouldn't let him readjust the headlights quickly and put the sticker on that day.
Had it been something like replacing the brakes, which is easy, and most garages rake you over the coals for, it would have been worth it to do it yourself and take it back to the garage for inspection the second time...for something little, like a $7 headlight adjustment, you just let them do it and be on with your day.

When I had to have my fuel pump replaced, I went and bought the pump on my own for them to use.
So they said they could not put a warantee on their work. Which was fine because the pump had a 3 year warantee on it anyway.
I didn't realize that mean that they would do a half <poopy> job putting it back together. Now I have to use my odometer to figure out how much gas i have, cause they won't fix what they screwed up without charging me all over again.

ford can put a power plant in a vehicle any day of the week but they are loose fitting poorly made cars. GMs are better quality over all IMO (not that they dont have problems of their own).
another reason i dont like ford is the placement of the oil filter... when i worked at AVIS i found that fords engineers are retarded and like to wrap the oil filter with the exhaust pipes...

while i agree on the older Foci and escorts, on the newer foci (mines '05) the placement of the oil filter is quite convenient.

Well i say damn whiny car owners . I too hate scammers but i equally hate people stereo typing mechanics.
I am a mechanic. But thankfully i work trucks for a fleet AKA, I get paid by the hour not the job and i have no real customer to deal with.
As for the headlights being out of adjustment and causing it to fail a safety thats legit possibly not true but it will cause a car/truck to fail safety.
As for charging you to do the work that has NOTHING to do with the mechanic its the shop owners position to set the prices and a mechanic usually gets in trouble for doing work for free even the most menial task.
And lastly when i sign that paper saying the vehicle is safe i am signing a legal biding document saying I SAID ALL WAS IN ORDER. if anything were to happen to that vehicle and it was found that something i missed was the cause than i can be CRIMINALLY charged and be sent to jail. So you will be DAMNED if i sign that paper no matter how much you feel i am ripping you off, if i feel or see something unsafe.
As for dealing with other mechanics my VW goes to the dealer all the time as too be honest at the end of the day fixing others junk the last thing i want is to have to work on mine. and i have NEVER had any trouble with the dealer and they still don't know i am a mechanic.
As for GM or Fords being easier to work on. Eh its all the same crap all cars piss me off to work on (their all designed by pencil pushers that thing their design never needs repairs). Hell just finished replacing a oil pan on a ford F550 with a PowerStroke. Bloody engine trans, one cross member the turbo and the whole intake piping has to come off to do it.

Amen.
The problem with auto mechanics is that people A:) Don't research where they take it, they go to the lowest bidder, B:)They don't even attempt to research their own car issue, and C:) The give the car to the mechanic, tell him to do what-he-gotta-do, not even knowing a thing about mechanic work. It's easy to screw people as a mechanic the same reason politicians screw people.
Not talking about this poster of this thread, just making a random observatino about mechanics.

My grandfather owns a garage, and I used to help out in the summers when I was in high school. Anybody who says that brand X is a breeze to work on, but brand Y is a pain is being prejudice, and we are just having another pointless automotive argument.
All cars are a pain to work on, and if the oil filter is in the ideal spot, that means that the thermostat has been moved to the wrong place, or the alternator is located on the bottom of the engine, or something.
I like GM, and I own a Pontiac now, but Merc, if you say that GMs have great oil filter placement, try changing the oil on a mid 90s W-body, and bring a towel to wipe the oil off yourself from the oil that hits the lower control arm, because the oil filter is located slightly behind the right front tire, and removing it is inhibited by the axle shaft and the upper control arm.

You know what I want?
A car where you DON'T have to rip off virtually the entire dash to replace the heater core. I had to do that on both my Plymouth Colt and my Grand Marquis. And it sucked.

There's a difference between changing out your filters and opening up your engine to make major repairs.
So far on my car, my intake manifold has melted, and my fuel pump has died.

Saying Ford sucks is silly.
My Family has owned two Ford products, two Daimler-Chrysler, two GM, and three Nissan. The two GM and Chrysler cars where by far the worst. Our Toyota's have had zero problems since we got them. The two Fords worked great, only reason we sold them is because they got to small for the entire family (I'm 6'3", riding in the back of an Explorer sucks monkey balls).

Haven't had any major problems (*knocking on wood) with my '95 Grand Marquis yet. It has 210,000 or so miles.
The shocks badly need to be replaced, but my friend that works at the Ford dealership said it's going to be at least $400, so I have to wait a couple weeks.
Other than that, I have to say that I don't like working on it that much. When I did the rear brakes it took about 2 hours longer than necessary because one of the calipers(?) wouldn't go back in the hole it came out of. And this was with my dad, who works on his vehicle all the time and designs cars for GM...

I personally like Jeep the most now. I haven't done anything beyond a simple oil change, but from what I've seen it looks easy enough to work on them, there is a lot of room under the hood (twin turbos anyone?).

Neither or those are really major, the intake might not be for everyone but you should be able to do your fuel filter. Really all filters, plugs, fluid change/flush. That way you only need the shop for a major repair.

bear i wrote a big thing up but closed out of the window...
you are right about stereo types being bad but most of the time they are right so i use them and count the rest as collateral damage
anyways lack of/inadequate quality control + flat rate * customers not knowing anything about cars= a situation where sketchy people (mechanics, dealers, ect...) can thrive.
agreed about the safety thing but being that it was just replaced and we dont have pot holes either the dealer dident install them correctly/aim them when installed or these guys just wanted to make a buck...
shub: i have a 00 grand prix GTP with a 3800 (II?) and the oil filter is in said location... i love it there. much more accessible than the n bodys or 3100/3400 series where the filter is on the front of the block.
my mom has a 02 park ave with a 3800 (other style III?) with the filter right by the drain plug and thats even better because you can change the filter while the oils draining without using another pan...
(i might have the II and III backwords)
the 3100/3400 and 2.8 V6 have similer oil placement as the ford 3.3l but ford ran the starter under the filter and the exhaust around it.
the camaro (90s) is a beast though wouldent ever considering owning one. the sn95 has it beat hands down for ease of mechanical access.
if i ever decide to become a mechanic for a living i would be a ford mechanic no doubt...always plenty of them to work on...
im just picking about fords they arnt that bad just not for me...(the hatred of ford was implanted by my mother and even though i own a 1968 mustang i can justify it by having a pony on the front instead of a blue egg)....and i couldent afford a chevelle...
