For the next 6 months, we shall be involved in a fitness competition.

The objectives and divisions are being worked on.

There wont be any judges or anything (except in the aesthetic part), because the measurements will be qualitative.

http://traineo.com/ - Traineo can help you log your efforts.

You can start preparing now, but the first weigh-in (official start of the competition) will be on January 1st. Get your weight, running times, lifting ability, etc (depending on categories you wish to compete in), in on that date.

If we use Traineo, I propose we use forumers in the competition as our "motivators."

It's probably not a bad idea to require it. At the very least it'll standardize calculation of BMI and record progress.

Which is why I posted different categories.

Post whatever you want when the time comes, and anything you put will be entered (whether you intend in competing in the categories or not).

Im in but right now my...

BMI is 20.3
Run about a 7-8min mile
6' 150# with about 6-7% body fat.

So we need different categories.

An idea I had for measuring strength increase is weight lifted (in specific ways) over BMI.

aw thats not fair.. the more out of shapers will win cuz theres more room for improvement, but im in. BMI doesnt mean anyhting by the way, it just takes height/weight ratio, according to them my bmi is 27 and 29 + is "obese" haha

The different categories allow for different types of people to get involved.
If you see a better way to measure progress, then say so.

And yes, the out of shapers will probably win most catagories. This is more to motivate us than it is for the people that already have healthy body weights.

For the people who consider themselves in shape, you can compete for fastest runner or other things along those lines.

Yeah, BMI has severe limitations. Those of us who are in some way athletic will have flawed BMIs indications due to BMI's assumptions about propotions of muscle, bone, and fat in a normal person. I'm a distance runner, for instance, so my legs have quite a lot of muscle and skew the BMI.

A couple measurements that may be of use for cardiovascular:

Timed Mile
Timed 5km
Timed 10km

I did my 5km in 22 minutes and a few seconds... Haven't timed myself on the other two recently.

I could probablyy only do the weight lifting competition. My mile time is 6:40 and I don't have enough weight to lose. I don't realy see myself getting a huge improvement on my mile, but my lift weight has gone down a few pounds.

Posted By: Gatyr

How about this...we have two categories for each competition: Best improvement and best overall. That way those of us who are already in shape or naturally gifted athletes have something to actually shoot for.

As far as competitions:

Best 10 rep bench press
How many times one can squat with 225
Pull ups
Push ups
Logest distance doing lunges
Mile, 5k, 10k time
Body fat percentage
Resting heart rate
Best aesthetic appearence
Some other cardio exercises? I can't think of any others besides swimming, and that just wouldn't be fair for yall :P

I like this a lot. These should be the categories, and if anyone feels the need to refine them, then put up your ideas.

As for proof...

I'd like it to be on your honor, because I doubt anyone is going to want to watch a few hours worth of video of forumers working out to authenticate anything.

For aesthetic appearance, that can be judged.

For a time frame: 6 months, with first "weigh-in" on new year's day. It gives us all ample time to plan an exercise schedule/eating plan, get used to said exercise schedules/eating plans, and gives us the time to get all the initial measurements of performance in each category.

Because of the ubiquity of that, I'd say it's fair. But steroids are out of the question (users tend to have muscular manboobs and the huge gain in muscle mass makes their heads look shrunken)

Why would pride have anything to do with it?  Protein and creatine are both completely naturally occurring in the body...

I understand that anabolic steroids mimic and force the extra production of testosterone, but it's not the same.  It's a supplement, and must still be worked with as hard, and most times harder, for them to be effective.

All i know is i personally felt better working out without creatine, It made me feel like a **edited** having to use some supplement to help get to where i wanted to be. Eating right and excercising right is the way to go i find. But as u know its all personal preference. I have no problem with protein cause its just food.

I'm not so sure age will be a big problem considering the majority of us here (and the ones who I suspect would take part in this) are 16-24. When you're comparing people, just be sure to look for height, weight, etc.

And then, you have your people who lift regularly, see increases in their lifts, use protein, eat right, and still do not gain any weight.

Also, when does this begin? Since football season has ended, I started lifting this past week. Also, looking at this traineo site, is it just for people looking to lose weigh and get in shape? Or if it also for recording lifts and such?

skipped reading the whole third page.

Categories: Age, weight?
Measuring Improvement in lifts: Percent increase on original lift max?
Running: Times, we could always do the mile, 5k, 10k, 100m, 200m. You have to include distance runners and sprinters.
Weight Loss: Again, percent of weight lost.  It has to be equal, like on the biggest loser or whatever
Supplements: Whey should be allowed, but not creatine or n20 or any other supplements like that, i'd vote on that

Still, 16-24 is a big difference. At 19-20 your just about done growing. Anyone less than 19 probably won't stand a chance. Maybe the categories should be like:
<15
15-17
17-19
19-23
23+

I'm in for sure... BUT! I don't really have much time/money to go to the Gym a lot... I also Smoke, so... Running No way in hell.... I walk a load at work.. I probably average around 1-3miles a day... SOOO...

I'm In for sure. I need this more then anyone knows. I recently got on a scale and about hung myself right their.

Height: 5'6
Weight: 213lbs

I'm going to Start a little Earlier then you guys, but my progress will be EXTREMELY slow, due to I don't want fast results... (fast results = Fat in 6-months) I want to Try and loose 70lbs by next year... I'm sick of wearing XL-2XL shirts and 38" pants... It's disgusting...

Also! Me personally I will hand out prize $$$ to somethings... Though I'm not sure if this is entirely trustworthy(I know some of you are but not all)

  • I will give out $25(and some paintball(or musical) crap)) For the overall winner
  • For anyone who looses 50+lbs I will give them $50 plus $1 dollar for each extra pound they loose.
  • Most "Athletic" Winner(most over all run time, weights) I will give them $15("muscle training" is extremely easy, it takes no psychological effort) so thats why its not much.

GOOD LUCK!

Remember for you Males, cut back on Soda pop, Beer, Fast Food(including pizza) and you will probably automatically loose 30lbs in 6-months if not sooner.

Mmmm... Eat up on that celery!!

Tell you guys what, we'll settle this the roman way.

All you guys run and lift all ya want and when your ready, pm me....then i'll drive down there and we'll have a brawl.

Sounds stupid, i know. But it is the ultimate test in overall fitness.

If you win, i'll give you a gold star.

until then, the BMI is bull.

I'm 6'3 255Lbs which makes me morbidly obese on the BMI.

however.

I can run the 10 k in 45-50 minutes.
bench 275 for 10
push-ups and stuff...well....no bragging, right?

Just saying this is bogus, people cannot be competing unless you have a set different forum for each TYPE of fitness level.

Just thought i'd throw that out there.

Then you're in good standing for the overall best ratings.

However, the original point of this was for improvement, not to enter what you've already got. The overall best categories were added for those people already in shape.

Just saying this is bogus, people cannot be competing unless you have a set different forum for each TYPE of fitness level.

Yo' momma's bogus, and we're working out the categories.

Just thought i'd throw that out there.

I had a salad for dinner, it was teh sux.  Not filling at all.

And Thor, I'd take you on.  I don't have the strength/weight, I would probably lose, but I've got technique.  I've got some MCMAP and a half a decade of Karate to back me up.

Salads suck, I hate them. I prefer a fruit salad over a regular salad. Way more satisfying.

And how are we doing this, because in overall fitness, I think I can take this. But I might lack in benching and running department. Aswell as the total amount of pounds lost.

Salads are good if you have a bunch of fattening crap over the lettuce.

My dad and I started a vegetarian (eventually will be vegan) diet the day before I posted this, just for the hell of fit.

I hope it helps.

I did one in the 6:50-s one time because I was getting embarassed with all the freshmen passing me, a senior (gym class).
But I'm definately more of an 8-minute kind of guy. Cigarettes don't help that much either.

For the past few weeks, my dad and I have been cooking some awesome food nearly every night. While we both love any food with meat in it, we were talking about dinner a few days ago when the idea came to make something that didn't include it.

We kept talking about what we could make and the idea came to go vegetarian for at least a month. The point is to see how well we can handle going without meat for so long and what recopies we can come up with that'll last us the month.

We soon agreed that it wouldn't be a challenge to us unless we cut off as many animal-based products as possible. The first two weeks is to ween us off of meat, the remainder of the time will be spent vegan, and could go past 2 two weeks if we feel like it.

Now that I created this competition, I think it could be beneficial for me to try the diet (vegetarians are usually quite skinny people).

Are those enough reasons for you?

  • Most "Athletic" Winner(most over all run time, weights) I will give them $15("muscle training" is extremely easy, it takes no psychological effort) so thats why its not much.

so its harder to loose weight off of a proper diet, then it is to follow a propler diet and workout everyday to everyother day? I find it funny how it's psychologicaly harder when u just need to loose weight but its extremely easy when your following a similar diet and working out everyday. I dunno, I've lost 50 pounds before, and i can say that was actually pretty easy. All you have to do is stop eating crap and walk for about an hour or two everyn night. Took me about 6 months and i lost a good 50 pounds doing that. Working out to look good on the other hand is a hell of alot harder.

Exactly!

This is what I dont understand... humans a very wierd animals... They wont do it if it makes them live longer, makes them last longer in the sack, makes them look 10x better but... OH!!! if their is some sort of money/coin involved... they are all over it.

Also about the whole "Muscle training isn't hard" I know its hard, but you really dont have to stop eating garbadge to gain muscle. you'll just look really "bulky" when "larger" people loose massive ammounts of weight they actually go psycholigical effects... I'm sorry but "larger" people have some sort of "addiction" to certin foods. Like me... I'm a sucker for The Baconator, and Pancakes with lots of butter. this has to do with all that "endorphment(sp)" crap... I know running creates endorphments but so does food... and the average American is way to lazy to go out for a run to get "feel good high" He/she would rather sit back and munch on chips or Icecream and they get the same "I feel better" feeling... also, when someone looses 50lbs they have to buy almost an entire new set of clothes(another reason why I jacked that price up) and they will become more "Accpeting" to alot of people they wouldn't normally be with.

Yeah, I can understand that
I usually avoid fast food because I feel horrible after eating it.

Imho if you have 4 square meals a day [ atleast a 66% of the food pyramid, you're pretty much set]
At least thats how i roughly judge my weekly consumption- there are days where I'll just eat real healthy and like one a week where i have a sweet or something, not really too much to make any difference.

depending on whether or not you do your research and make sure you're getting everything, nutrition wise, from what you're eating.  mainly vitamins and minerals that are associated with meats.

We could do a weigh in right now. Let's put in our results in the next few days.
