Subject: A question on Iran

I have a question for those here about Iran and WMD's. Since Iran denies its nuclear weapons program and our intelligence? claims that the program stopped in 2003, why would Iran develope a 2000km ranged ground launched, payload balistic missile?

Militarily and financially a high explosive warhead would be ineffective on this type delievery system. The "bang" for the buck ratio is way too small. To justify research and manufacture and deployment a WMD warhead either nuclear/chemical/biological must be the end result.

So why would Iran dump so much money into an ineffective weapon system unless it plans to place a WMD class warhead on it?

Because it'll launch plague cows a lot farther than a trebuchet.

Duh.

Mm hm. There need to be more movies with siege weapons. I'd like to see old school catapults throwing dozens of smaller rocks into massed infantry.

They're huge and clumsy though. It's a lot easier to cart around five catapults than it is one trebuchet.

You run the risk of killing your own troops with plague rats.  The Trebuchet has so much more range than the catapult too.

No, I just think noone knows what he tried to accomplish with his post.

He came in posted tat Iran is more than likely making WMD's because of the missile they have just engineered is useless for anything less, like we are the ones that believed them.

Was he trying to get a debate? I think that what he said is fairly obvios

How am I stirring trouble. Iran and the Parrot Press state they have no nuclear program, the majority of the nation believes Bush is "lieing" about Irans nuke program, and the Iranians test fire a nuclear capable balistic missile on the same day as a "peace conference" on the middle east. Strange logic there, millions for a missile that is only financially and militarily worth it if it carries a WMD class warhead.

Theyd hit more then that, alot of modern bombs have the cabability of up to 250+ miles (or so im told). Went to a conference on modern nuclear weapons the other day, it was pretty interesting and scary at the same time. The expert who did most of the talking claimed if dc or Pittsburg were to be hit with anything the likes of what the soviets had that anything and anyone in a 280 mile radius would be killed/destroyed. (in other words half of my state would be screwed. )

Yea, I believe we (humans) will end the world/our existence with nukes some day. Do you have any nuclear power plants by you? I hear the ones in Michigan have like a 50 mile kill zone basically, but I actually live far enough away that the major part wouldn't hit me.

Nonsense. The most powerful nukes were developed in the 50s and 60s. At that time delivery systems were crap, and huge yields were necessary to make sure that you took out what you wanted tot ake out. Today nukes can be accurate to within about the size of your house, and consequently the yields are far, far smaller. Modern nuclear doctrine rarely involves splashing whole cities- rather, nukes would be targeted on military, communications, and transportation facilities.

Anyone who worries seriously about nuclear attack today is deluded. Nobody capable of hitting North America with a nuke would be dumb enough to do it. The only plausible nuclear threat in the forseeable future would be if extremists were to steal or purchase a weapon- and then it would necessarily be one of the very small ones, probably a tactical warhead. Of course, that would still gut the downtown of any major city...

Soviet styled nuclear weapons used a "dirtier" form of uranium or plutonium, with a halflife in the 25,000 year range. The actual burst radius of a mid sized airburst would be intantainious lethal in the 5km center radius, 5-25km radius would be 50-75%, 25km and out 20-50% lethal. Radiation levels will be lethal for up to 25years depending on the density of radiated material. Ground bursts are less lethal, but more "fallout" of debris thrown up in the blast.
Now the larger the yield, the larger the lethality radius.

The Russians are down to only 180 SS-18 launchers, the only weapon they have with a yield over 1 megaton- and even those have sleectable yields of either 750KT or 20MT. The Chinese may have weapons of up to 3MT.

Neither Russia or China is stupid enough to use its nukes. Pakistan's nukes are worrying, but they're not even suspected to have exceeded 40KT yield yet, so their nukes are still babies.

Nukes are an almost insignificant threat in today's world. Far greater potential threats exist.

thats what I'm thinking, I'm much more worried about Pakistan Wiping it's self out or India, Pakistan is a bad situation right now, and they DO have nukes.

We should do a forum treb building contest. We did one a few years ago in shop class. We could compete for range and reload time and things of that nature.

They don't care about the holy land anymore.  The "president" of Iran is a radical Shi'ite. A huge majority of the radicals in the Shi'a sect are not concerned with getting Jerusalem anymore, that's the Sunnis.  He only wants to become a stronger and more "dominant " world power,  they believe the 12th Imam is coming, and they want to show their "support" for "him."

It took us most of the summer, and even then it wasn't very sturdy.  It fell apart after a dozen shots or so.

But then, that was just a couple of kids playing in the back yard.  With more serious effort and skill, I would think you could make a good one in a few days of hard work.  I'm sure there are plenty of plans/instructions online.

I'll try to have my treb up and running again by Christmas. I need a new bar to hold the weight boxes, and I think it needs a new firing mechanism, maybe do away with the string tied to the catch and just make a little remote for it.

I would try to make it mobile, add wheels and some form of propulsion, but then we'd be more into medieval battle bots.

Well, a correct treb has either wheels or a pivoting counter wieght. otherwise the wieght of the counterwieght will cause it to be unstable.

I was going to take a physics class in high school for the express purpose of building a treb, as launching softballs was a class project. Then the new principal decided that that was a weapon and nothing of the sort could be allowed on school grounds. I then had to reschedule, and the chem/physics teacher decided to get a job in a state that paid more in a school that didn't suck.

I know the AP physics class was allowed to build one of those Ballistas as long as it didn't use a spear tipped head. now that was an epic fail, they were winding it back and the whole thing snaped in half.
