To All My Democrat Friends:
Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes
for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress,
non-addictive, sex-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday,
practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious
persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with
respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of
others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions
at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling,
and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally
accepted calendar year 2008, but not without due respect for the
calendars of choice of other cultures (including the Aztec calendar)
whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to
imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor
the only America in the Western Hemisphere . Also, this wish is made
without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability,
religious faith, or sexual preference of the wishee.
To All My Republican Friends:
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

no one's trying to prevent them from saying it. people are just trying to stop government spending on a religious holiday. people like retailers who use happy holidays are simply trying not to exclude the portion of their business that isnt christian.

The reason stores chose to promote "Happy Holidays" rather than a specific holiday is almost always just a smart business decisions rather than someone who complained.

I never understood why people get offended by anyone saying merry Christmas, happy holidays, happy Hanukkah etc (also never understood while nativity scenes bother people) . Anyway you say it your just expressing joy and good times of celebration. If I say merry Christmas to someone and they say happy Hanukkah back, im fine with it or visa versa.

I laughed, but only because of the extremes both sides take on the issue.
I think that if a person, network, company, etc. wants to say Merry Christmas, they have just as much right to that as they do to saying Happy Holidays on the air/in merchandise/whatever.
It bothers me when city councils become involved in the displaying of nativity scenes as well though. It's not forcing religion on anyone, and it's not the state's place to say whether I can show my belief in the birth of Christ(whether it actually occurred in December or not) in my yard of my house or business. Separation of church and state is a two way street isn't it?

I love it when pessimistic, fault-finding grown-ups toil mindless hours trying to 'educate' everyone. Their exhaustive research has shown me that; Santa can't say ho ho ho anymore; Santa's body image is negative for kids; schools can't have 'Christmas' concerts anymore (it's much kinder to say 'Winter Festival'). GJ, the world is a better place now, I can't wait for the next ill in society that they fix.

The principals this country was founded on require that the government cannot support in any way shape or form specific religions.
A Christmas concert by a public school is state sponsorship of Christianity and thus it cannot be called by that name.
Just imagine the uproar if a school put on a Hanukkah concert. Now use that to try understanding what minority religions feel when they have to pay for their kid to perform with the band (directly and through taxes), yet only Christian music is being played.
I get that it's not feasible to cover everything, and holiday concerts do have their place. But to specify one religion over another is unconstitutional when dealing with state sponsored facilities and organizations.
If you get all pissy that a public school refuses to acknowledge Christianity over other religions, send your kid to a private school and pay for that sponsorship yourself.

Tolga, just playing the devil's advocate here, but...
If you really want to go back to the "founding principals" instead of today's interpretation of the constitution;
The founding fathers were coming from a country where the "government" altered the country's religious laws to fit his own needs. The separation of church and state was originally designed to protect religion from secular alteration.

They were also founding a country that many people came to due to persecution in their home lands, much of which was religious. It is also known that some of the founding fathers were deists that disliked religion and wanted to make sure that the corruption and hypocrisy of its leaders didn't infiltrate the government.
I think the words work both ways, and I also agree that religion should not be altered by government.
Besides, the point of secularization is not to alter religion, it's to keep any religious action (that cannot show or has insignificant non-religious influence) out of government. I believe, if your interpretation is correct, that it wasn't secularism they feared (as they were secularists themselves), but more powerful religions trying to rid of the others.

I think it's more of a happy medium between both of our points of view. In England, where the majority of the founding fathers came from, it began with the "State' trying to manipulate and change religion. Only after that was not an option, or once it was not enough, the state BECAME the religion.
The persecution in those times more often than not was not against other religions, but other versions of christianity. The king punished protestants more than they persecuted believers in witch-craft and the like.
While I'm not saying that we should have a religious government by any means, I do believe that "separation between church and state" is often stretched a little too far.

The way to take "the separation of church and state" too far is the eradication of church by state. Secularists aren't doing that, nor do they want to do that.

Secularism is not about the kids, it's about everybody. It has nothing to do with how offended people are. Religion has proven time and again to be an extremely destructive force when governments are dominated by a single one, or there are fights by different religions to dominate the government. The way to remedy that is to make sure that religion does not touch policy or the budget.
While allowing schools to prefer one religion over another (in your case, Christians through Christmas concerts sanctioned by public schools), you're putting public money towards one religion over all the others.
It seems insignificant to allow a school production to prefer Christmas over other holidays. But each waved infringement on the Constitution makes it possible for greater infringements to make it through without being questioned. If it wasn't for secularists fighting back against these transgressions, this country would easily have become a Christian theocracy by now.
And I know you think I'm some evil spawn of Satan, but being a secularist =/= wanting the state to indoctrinate people against religion.
Kids need to learn how to think. They need to develop logical thinking skills and skepticism. Religion wants to turn people away from that, because once logic is applied to the thought, many claims can be proven wrong or made less believable.
I couldn't care less whether or not you want your kid to sit on Santa's lap at the mall today, just don't make me pay so your religion can be put above others. I don't think I can make it any simpler.

I am a Christian and was raised as a Republican. I have absolutely no problem with the term "Happy Holidays". It makes more sense to say that than "Merry Christmas", "Happy Chanukah" or "Happy Kwanzaa". As Holidays does infact cover all the bases and doesn't give special attention to any particular Holiday or Religious Event.

I say both, usually happy holidays to any customers at work. I asked my son today about what he thought about Christmas, he said he can't stand the christmas music, not because of the content but because it's so overplayed. There's a lot more evils out there imo than saying merry christmas, however I certainly respect those that either don't celebrate it or just plain don't want to participate or are sick of it.
