Well I didn't. Yet. During the winter, the homeless from the surrounding neighborhood sometimes try and sleep by the door in our stairwell for warmth. I personally haven't seen this situation yet, but I'm not exactly sure how I would rid of them. I don't want to have to force the bum out, for the possibility of getting shanked is far too great. However, a nice bucket of water will definitely do the trick, IMO. |

Definitely the wrong thing to do, homeless are like animals, and they will be back, every day, in the same spot, for food. And if they come back to that spot cracked out you could have yourself a little problem. Not sure how to get rid of him though, because you are kind of in the same situation of him returning-it's still not as bad as giving him food though, because then he is going to come to your house expecting something, and if you don't have anything to give him that day and he just smoked rock, it's not going to end too good. -------------

Legally the best thing for you to do is call the cops and report that you have a vagrant sleeping on private property. They'll take him in, get him cleaned up, provide him with clean clothes and a warm meal and a warm cell to sleep in for the night. We had a homeless guy back home that the police picked up on regularly scheduled days (about 4x a year). They'd take him to the station, get him all cleaned up, get him a check-up and give him some new clean clothes from the lost-and-found locker and then send him on his way. ------------- <Removed overly wide sig. Hooray for ignorance of the homeless dynamic! Anyway, don't do anything to hurt the poor guy. It would be about the most scumbag thing in the world to do. Either give the guy some food and a blanket, or call the police, but only call them if you know they will take him to the department and give him somewhere to sleep for the night. Sadly, far too often, at least in this area, the police will just pick them up and drop them off somewhere outside of a residential area, like an overpass, where they promptly freeze to death. -------------

Seems kind of low around Christmas. If you're afraid of him, call the cops, but I'd say lay off the sadistic thrills around the holidays. It's sad enough he doesn't have any family to be with around this time, much less homeless on somebody's door step. Of course, if he's a jackass about it, then you poor freezing water on him.

Nothing is terrible with helping them, but if they are coming to his house and THEN he helps them, he's going to have a problem. If your passing one on the street, then by all means give them some cash. But I know a lot of people that give them something every day and then it's like a routine (ex: walk to starbucks, get them a coffee as well as your own, go to work. One day your late, you don't stop for coffee and you have a bum following you from starbucks to your place of employment). You don't want them to expect something from you every day, especially so close to where you live. Most of them are druggies and alcoholics, and if they get all juiced up and you can't give them something that day, you might run into a problem. And way to take what I said out of context MBD. They are like wild animals in the sense that once you give them food, they come to expect it, and they lurk until they get it. -------------

That or make a deal with him, something like you will let him sleep there as long as he doesn't make a mess out of your porch. Then take a picture of him, then if anything happens around your house or he does trash your porch you can get the 5-0 involved. Just make sure he understands the grounds under which you will let him stay.

I would let him rent a room if he got a job, and rent would be cheap. But personally if anyting fishy would happen or go wrong, its hamma-time.

Most of them do drink, only because it makes them feel warm, even though it is really hurting them it is just a form of comfort for them. Some of the homeless can't help it though, lots of the homeless around here end up on the streets because they are mentally ill or hit rock bottom and couldn't get out. Here is a story my dad worked on, it is on the local homeless. There is a Hobo that everybody calls Joe in my area. He is currently running around in ass-less jeans. I'd give him some but hes about 300+ pounds. Nice guy though. Kinda odd HE walks around listening to a tape player and talking to himself. I feel sorry for him.

Slightly skewed numbers. Although the study I have is from 1999, it breaks it down further. 38% have substance abuse problems. That is not "Most of them." Your study lumped mental illness in with it. Roughly 24% have diagnosable mental conditions. If you are going to say that 38% is a lot, consider that 22% of the homeless in America have a job, and an equal percentage are former military, and 38% of the homeless in America are families with children. -------------

Perhaps I should clarify something. I live in a very large city, and the police really don't have the time to go around feeding, cleaning, and housing the homeless. I could understand that if there was a town bum or something that just so happened to sleep by my porch that he might get cleaned or clothed, but the homeless around here have a BAD reputation. I've heard many a story of the homeless harassing and robbing the students here. We aren't talking about friendly bums here. And yes, I think my late night thoughts have gotten the best of me; caking and/or soaking the homeless is pretty cruel. Idk what I was thinking. |

Alright that was the first site I found before I had to go out, so your numbers are probably more accurate. Although not most, 38% is still a good percentage, and speaking from personal experience, most bums I have come across have been under the influence of something. Also, mental illness is still serious, if the guy is skitzo and you don't give him a ham sandwich that day, you might get a knife in the throat. I'm just saying that a lot of homeless can be dangerous because many of them are not completely stable, and they don't really have anything to lose. Not all are like that, and I have met some really nice ones before, it's just for the most part, having them around (your house especially) isn't the best idea. They are going to be looking for handouts, and if you give them what they want (and are always in the area) then they will expect it. When I'm in New York, I always try and give something to a few homeless, but I don't walk the same route every day and pass the same homeless everyday because I don't live there. For whatever it's worth, he could be putting himself into a bad situation by giving the guy food or money. -------------
