I'm looking for a good all purpose knife. My current knife doesn't hold an edge very long and after 5 years of faithful serves, needs to retire.
This would be an all purpose knife, hunting/fishing/general outdoors/self defense, all that jazz.
Fixed or folding doesn't really matter to me, just not serrated. Too hard to sharpen. Looking in $40-80 range. I have heard good things about KA-BARs.
Any info would be great. Thanks.

I am getting a KA-BAR for my Birthday.
I currently have a $1 knife from walmart. It honestly works pretty well for what I usually use it for.

I have a RAT5.
A RAT3 or RC-3 would be pretty good for general use.

Frosts Mora knifes they are Swedish army knifes Cheap but very good quality. Can be picked up for 15 bucks. Make sure you get the Stainless Steel one. You can hammer them into a tree and stand on them if needed, easy to sharpen and hold an edge well. And if you lose it, who cares its cheap.

I have a Smith and Wesson SWAT folding knife. Good all purpose knife, and easily fits in a pocket.

Personally, I like Kershaws. I just bought a smooth bladed, locking Kershaw from Dick's Sporting Goods. I suggest going to your local sporting goods store and going through all of the knives in the display case till you find one you like.

I would have double edged the blade, as it is it is more of slashing/cutting instrument than a stabbing tool.

i like swiss army knives. not so much for defense but i can just as easily hit someone with a fist full of keys as i can fight with a knife...
also if you get a knife with serrations down on the bottom half you can grind it away and have nice blade geometry. cuts very well while pulling.

Boot knives = garbage. They always get in the way and are a pain in the ass to draw. Get yourself a good Field Knife. Ka-bar sized.

I to have the S&W swat knife, I got the serrated back one and I am kind of
regretting it, but other than that it is a great knife.

Boot knives are great and they aren't a pain to draw at all. They are the best fighting knives too- double edged, and they are really easy to pull if you set the strap around the blade right and make sure the clip is tight. You don't even need to put the strap around the blade really, it doesn't go anywhere. And if you only carry it as a fighting knife, most people file down where the blade meets the handle so you can snap off the blade once it's in. Definitely not a good all purpose knife, but that's not really what they are designed for, and I wouldn't get one for what you plan on using it for. They aren't the best quality, and they don't hold an edge for that long because they really don't have to. But, back on topic, I have a KA-BAR and I love it for the stuff you plan on using it for. It holds a decent edge for a good amount of use.

Gerber Paraframe 2
That's the knife I carry. They make that knife in several sizes, with and without serration. It is a great all-purpose knife for daily carry.

My baby. Emerson-Neely Timberline SPECWAR knife. A couple of the military types on here may appreciate this one. It was a gift to me from a friend for my upcoming deployment. 12" long total, and the blade is a quarter inch thick, so I can safely use it to pry. It's got a small hammer cap built into the pommel as well.
God knows what I'll use it for, but I still love it.

That Spec War is a nice knife, but pretty pricey.
I'd love to own one, but they cost more than a payment on my pretty expensive car :)
Personally I carry a slightly smaller knife.
My pretty much daily carry is a CRKT Sting II, designed by A G Russell. It came with a really crappy partially fabric covered sheath, wich was half a step above useless, too long and too bulky. I quickly replaced this with a horizontal carry custom made Kydex one. This is my self defence knife. Easily reachable with either hand, solid metal so it can double as a Kubotan if needed, and a fixed blade for speed of deployment and it is 100% certain it won't "fail to lock".
It gets replaced by some of my other carry knives, depending on where I am, what I'm wearing, what I'm doing and such.
This is a suprisingly sturdy, well made, nicely shaped knife made by a Chinese company called DOW. (Dogs of War). The custom sheath cost about 3 times the value of the knife. The Knife holds an edge wonderfully and does, I'm sad to say, also funciton as a utility knife when it's carried.
This is my CRKT BearClaw. It doesn't get carried much any more as a belt knife. It used to be my daily carry knife, but now it's attached to the strap on my work bag. Again, wonderfully versatile, and very dangerous in the right hands. also small and light.
This is my "special needs" knife. Its a Cold Steel made Zytel knife. This one is a non edged stabbing weapon, a copy of one of their Mini Tac knives, IIRC. It's marketed as a boot knife. Again, custom sheath. The sheath needs reworking because there is too much metal on it. They also make a bladed one, which is a copy of a SkeanDu (Spelling?)
These are a couple of my pocket folders that get carried as utility knives.
The top on is a Byrd. A Chinese made Spyderco. Good quality, nice blade, holds an edge. The middle one is a Kershaw. Nice slim design, nice blade, also holds a pretty good edge. The bottom one is my cheap and nasty fell of the back of a Chinese truck knife.Semi decent blade, holds an OK edge. Won't hurt my pocket too badly if this gets lost. :) Gets taken on trips that this is likely to happen (Beaches, woods, the like).
This is a bit of a gits and shiggles knife. Its an Applegate Fairbain fighting knife, but a mini pocket folder version. I say mini because the blade is only 2.25 inches, compared to the original one of around 7 :)
What are your knives used for? If it's for daily general carry, get anything. Seriously. Get a quality blade you like and pay for it, and keep it for a while, or get a cheap nasty blalde that you can replace every 6 months.
If it's for self defence, get a good fixed blade knife. (If it's legal where you life). There is nothing in folding blades that comes close to the speed and security of a fixed blade.
If it is for daily work, cutting open boxes or packages or stuff, why not get one of those pocket folders that takes Stanley cutter blades?
Just replace blade when it's blunt.
All of these knives (with the exception of the Cold Steel plastic one are available with serrated or not. I also chose "not". Escept for the bear Claw. I wanted maximum cutting power, and you aren't meant to use it for anything besides fighting, so sharpening isn't an issue.
All these knives are around the price bracket you suggested. One I have, that isn't pictured here (It is AWOL) is a Spyderco Native. Little pricey. From Spyderco it's around $90.

Lol, those are only my Daily carry knives. (Not all of them together, my pants would fall down)
They all have different uses and reasons why I'll carry them. You'll never believe how useful a knife is unless you start carrying one.
Like I said, my Native isn't pictured, and I've misplaced so many CRKT KISS and M16's and H&K blades :)
Here are some of my other, slightly more specialised knives

Beautiful Leatherman, Kayback. I've got a Leatherman Wave that I'm very fond of, even though I managed to break the tip off of one of the pliers.

Yeah I got this Charge last year Xmas. It is amazing.
How the hell did you manage to break a tip off? I've cut through padlocks with mine!
I love the interchangeable hex-key, torc wrench, flat head and Phillips screwdrivers.

We were cleaning an LMG barrel one of my troops had forgotten to before he buggered off for some bonus duty. We had to get the blank firing adapter off, and it just wouldn't budge- goddamned muzzle was so baked with carbon from firing blanks that I actually broke my leatherman levering the BFA off.
I could probably get it exchanged, but I got it for free anyway- they sent it to my step mom in Kandahar, and she had no use for it. It still does the job; I almost NEVER need needlenose pliers...
