TL;DR warning...

So me and some friends went to an emo gathering last night at a club in Dallas by mistake. We went to see a local band (who is NOT emo, BTW) play, ended up gettig lost, got there just in time to see our local band leaving.

However, havig dropped ten bucks on admission, we decided to stay and watch the little emos/scene kids play. So the first band was actualy decent, I was pretty impressed. I don't get out to see alot of live music, so it's nice to see a little amatuer talent up close. They played al their own music, not bad really, and then we moved to the large stage, where the apparent main act was tuning up.

Everything from here on out is totally priceless comedy. This band has some kick ass metal riffs going on with their guitarists. The lead is playig a dimebag signature Dean through a JCM800 Marshall, it was really sweet. The backup was playing a Zakk Wylde LP just like mine, through a Marshall MG stack. All in all, I was getting ready for some really good music.

Bear in mind these guys are a long way from metal. These are total scene kids. Their first two songs were decent, the music was great, the lead singer went the screamo route (which surprised me, he was like 5'9" 110 pounds at the MOST), then the mosh started.

I've never seen emo or scene kids mosh. It was possible the funniest live thing I've ever seen. It looked like a seizure attack at the special olymics. So apparently this mosh isn't hardcore enough for the players, so they want to start a hardcore super mosh. They tell the room to spit into two parts, and just run like hell into each other.

So one of my friends I'm with is like 6'2", 280. He's one alot of powerlifting competitions, he's massive. So he gets back, gets a running start, and just dives into one of the poor emo kids. You see blood spray from the kid's face, and he hits the ground. My friend's like, "Dude, you alright?" The kid goes, "THAT WAS FREAKIN' AWESOME".

After that, the band proceeds to create godawful screamo versions of Sweet Child o' Mine and Comfortably Numb, and we leave. I think I'm going to go back, I honestly think that's one of the funniest sights I've ever seen.

Sounds funny as hell, we used to go to the local scene congregation down the street and watch them make asses out of themselves while we chilled in the back of the room. We didn't like the music or the people we just watched and laughed. It is almost like roman gladiator games type entertainment.

The windmill stuff made me laugh first time i saw them do it. It's stupid.

Strato, any idea which bands they were? Possibly some people from my school could have been playing their. My friend sets up concerts most of the time in Arlington, but he is spreading around. It's pretty cool to see a 17 year old actually renting out places and hooking up a lot of bands with gigs and my friend gets some good profit out of it too.

Small hardcore shows are awesome.

There is a band called Suicide Silence who was here a few months ago, I have never seen anything like it. Half the floor is pretending to be a windmill the other half looked like a seen from 300 where everybody was trying to kill each other. Good times.

And size has nothing to do with screaming. See Dani Filth. 5"4 and an insane metal vocalst (song: Funeral in Carpathia).

Ewww... suicide silence.

Hardcore dancers are funny.

Especially since most people think they are actually moshing.

I am a avid fan of punk rock music however it is no fun to mosh with the kids who have the metal studs all over their jean jacket vests.  That just plain hurts.

The only name I remember was Automatik, and my local band was Everthorn. There are about 14 bands that played that night, the club was called the Door (former Gypsy Tea Room). If you lke local rock, check it out, you might see me and my friends making asses out of emos or getting kicked out if you go on a Saturday.

MOSH!!! stuff kinda gets organized like that at the local club here but a good show generally means someone is getting stabed or shot. i remember this one time a guy tried stabbing me with a syringe and the bouncer had that guy up agaisnt a wall so fast no one really cared. LOl about the big guy, i generaly will go out to concerts n clubs with friends but all the girls are super small so i always end up trying to make a wall to stop them from getting crushed my moshers, will trying to mosh myself, and in the end ill be called cowardly because i wasnt moving up to the front...

Not really. They know what the general public sees as each.

Nitpicking on whether something is hardcore or emo or whatever is really pointless.

carl, I also agree that you don't seem to know a whole lot about hardcore.

Booksandleaves, hardcore music isn't for morons. That was a pretty moronic statement.

Dave, hardcore obviously actually is music, now you're just being silly.

Another thing, I'm sick of people dogging on "emo" all the time. I'm not talking about dressing the scene, I'm just talking about music and emotion here. Shouldn't all good music be dripping with emotion? I know I sure as hell don't want to live in a world where people can't appreciate raw emotion and art.

i agree...i dont understand how people put bands into an "emo" genre...i feel like thats putting a band into an "indie" genre...it describes the band but its not a genre of music

but anyway im curious as to what people think emo music is...i always thought i listened to a lot of "emo" music such as saves the day, brand new, and the early november...i dont dress in black eye liner or all black clothes with a hair comb over....the shows i go to there arent people flailing their arms and spazzing out except some opening bands i saw for thursday...

even if you're gonna call the whole hardcore swinging dancing thing retarded, you can might as well calling skanking as equally retarded...i dont really care what you do to enjoy yourself at a show just as long as you enjoy the overall experience

I know that I hate emo more because of the fans than the genre. Sure the horrible singing, tacky music, stupid image, and even worse lyrics are pretty bad. But its the fans themselves who take it overboard. Its the kids who live in 1/2 million dollar houses with brand new cars who listen to MCR and think that their life is horrible because Mommy won't let them shop at Hot Topic. Its the kids who sit around and do nothing  but **edited** and moan about their life but won't do a damn thing about it. Its because of the kids who pretend to be bi so they can get attention at school. Its also hated because 90% of those kids think that they are "tr00 punx" or because they listen to BMTH that they are  "br00t4l".

Just my two cents.

You keep saying that but have yet to back it up.

Omg..

I know I'm sick of all of the "hardcore" kids at my school. Not because they're screamo, because they act like Metal-Nazis, all other bands than Atreyu are pansy music.

God that sounds boring and lame.

I agree.

It also makes me wonder because you said you "jam out" in your room.

What are you scared to do it at a show?

The only shows I can see sitting in the back and just listening is slow stuff like Jack Johnson.

I went to see Flogging Molly once with a friend. She was not into the whole crowd thing because she was sick or some nonsense. We ended up staying up on the second floor and looking down. I was so bored it wasn't even funny.

You also said you tried "moshing" to Modest Mouse? What the hell?

I know that I hate emo more because of the fans than the genre. Sure the horrible singing, tacky music, stupid image, and even worse lyrics are pretty bad. But its the fans themselves who take it overboard. Its the kids who live in 1/2 million dollar houses with brand new cars who listen to MCR and think that their life is horrible because Mommy won't let them shop at Hot Topic. Its the kids who sit around and do nothing but **edited** and moan about their life but won't do a damn thing about it. Its because of the kids who pretend to be bi so they can get attention at school. Its also hated because 90% of those kids think that they are "tr00 punx" or because they listen to BMTH that they are "br00t4l".Just my two cents.

Well thats why I said music. Though I certainly wouldn't really consider MCR emo music. Trust me, I get plenty annoyed with the type of kids you described. However, just because a kid wears tight pants and a band t-shirt doesn't mean he hates his life, doesn't mean he's bi, and doesn't mean he's "emo"(whatever that may be, because I still don't feel everyones on the same page here). Like I said, I like to think that all the music I listen to is full of emotion.

I like to air guitar while I clean my room. Makes a boring chore more enjoyable.

The trend is tight clothing, hair in the face, razorblades (cuzz cuttins cool yo) on a necklace, whining constantly, and loving MCR/Underoath/Generic Garbage. And then on their myspace they talk about how they are bi and nobody understands them. Also, they only shop in hot topic and hate major corporations such as American Eagle and hate "preps"

1/2 of my local high school is like that. The other half are "gangstas". I guess the suburbs are real hood now.

Edit: I forgot the "redneck group". You all should know what I'm talking about. Dixie outfitter shirts, super thick southern accent, skyjacked F150 or Silverado, must have a confederate flag on everything they own, use the "n" word all the time (as in I hate "n" people), listen to rap, use terms such as shorty, and dawg, generally big Georgia Bulldogs fans, yet have never been to georgia.

More serious than less serious.

I could be wrong but weren't you the one who went to see lamb of god?

Classic rock ftw by the way.
Lamb of god is not hardcore. Not even close.

What are they then?

I stil maintain my opinions on hardcore in general.

Hardcore = Bad Brains, and the sort.

I'm a fan of the other album.

I saw them after the Black parade came out(), and they did some stupid crap.

They were in those costumes from one of the videos playing all Black Parade songs. They even introduced themselves as The Black Parade.

Half way through they stop, change clothes, change the sign that is on the stage saying the album name, and come out.

This time they introduce themselves as MCR and play the older stuff.

A lot of hardcore music get categorized and labeled as emo just because of the screaming. Funny thing is, most hardcore bands hate emo kids. Some "hardcore" kids in my hometown had jackets that said "Punk's Dead, Emo's are next".

I lol'd
